I had my first Social Psychology lecture today. The lecturer, Mr. Shankar taught us
about confirmation bias. I didn't really understand what confirmation bias was until i did
some research online.I understood and started to think how confirmation bias exactly took
place in my life.
When i was small, before my sister was born, i thought that my life was wonderful.
With all the caring and love i could get. My mother gave extra love to me, accompanied
and stayed by my side when i was sick. However, after my sister was born, i started to be
alone. When i was sick, i find medicine by myself, never thought of telling my mother,
thinking that she will know that i am sick. Unfortunately, she didn’t. I felt very sad. On the
other hand, when my sister was sick, she stood by her side, fed her all the medicine and
food.
I know my parents thought i was old enough and independent enough to stand by
myself. But i was still a kid. I didn't know much about getting all the medicine or anything
by myself. I always thought that my parents were much more bias to my sister more than
me. I always thought that they loved my sister more than me.
From what i was taught, i understood that i always thought that my parents had
confirmation bias towards me and my sister. However, i learnt to think maturely and more
independently. When i grow older, only i knew that they wanted me to grow up, instead of
spoon-feeding me. When i grow older, i learned that if they continue to spoon-feed me, i
will never grow up.

I called my cousin just now. We talked a lot. He told me that one of his friend was
addicted to cigarette. I asked him, how could this happen and he told me that his friend’s
family is a bit complicated.
He told me that the parent of his friend had divorced. The father had another woman
outside, and was the main cause to their divorce.Child custody is normally granted to the
mother. However, his father won the lawsuit and the child had no choice but to follow the
father because his mother doesn’t have any job or stable income to raise the child.
The child stayed with the step-mother at home everyday while the father went to
work and will be home very late. The step-mother had very bad habits. She smoked and
even gambled. The child then followed the step-mother footstep, causing the child to
smoke and gamble. He thought that smoking was a very good habit as no one stopped him
or tell him that smoking is bad.
Before i hung up the phone, i advise my cousin about the effect of smoking. He say
that he understood and promised me that he will never smoke. I flashed back to what Mr.
Shankar taught and understood that was one of the example for social learning
perspective.

We were having a campfire at the hostel that night and said about our experiences
and what made us motivated. It was my turn and i thought of saying about my school
results.
During UPSR, i was too stubborn to listen to my mother in taking tuition for science.
I told her that i believe i can score in science. She trusted me and i didn’t went to any
tuition for science. Turned out i got 4A and 1B, and that B was science. She was
disappointed with me and scolded me for getting bad results. I was so disappointed with
my results and with my mother. She didn’t even consult me but keep on scolding me for
getting bad result.
After UPSR, it was PMR. She had high expectation on me too. Thinking that i
would score all 7A’s. However, i failed her again. I only managed to score 3A’s and 4B.
The 3A’s were English, Mathematics and surprisingly, Science. She gave up on me.
But i didn’t. I still continues doing my studies and tuition to improve my results. I was very
tired for the two years as i tuition non-stop. She didn’t say anything.
I knew my malay sucks, i took class in two totally different genre class. My parents
challenged me. My mother said, if i could score in SPM, she will give me money to travel
to Korea. While my father said that he will buy me a laptop. I accepted their challenge. I
scored 7A’s in my trial. However, that doesn’t means that i am good enough. I continued
studying and studying, and i scored with flying color. I scored 2A+, 7A’s and 1A-. My

parents did as they promised. My father bought a laptop for me, my mother changed the
trade ticket to a DSLR camera for me.
I always thought that they gave me really good motivation despite they seem to
gave up on me.

ARCHITECT VS POLICE
SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 13
4 September 2014 8.45 PM
Before we finished our secondary education, we were always asked what is our
occupation. I had always dreamed of becoming a police since i was young. Reasons?
My reasons are very easy. To achieve 0 crime rate country.
I was very eager when it comes to running or marathon. I always joined this
marathon and that running competition as i always thought to be a good police officer,
stamina is very important.
Until one day, i went to Singapore and saw many fascinating building. I was 100%
attracted to it. I did research on what architect does and was really inspired by a quote
said by Harry Seidler.” Architecture is not an inspirational business, it’s a rational
procedure to do sensible and hopefully beautiful things; that’s all”
This quotation made me felt inspired and was wondering should i choose
architecture or to be a police. My parents recommended me to architecture because they
knew i enjoyed drawing, designing and doing handcrafts. Hence, i chose to study in
architecture so that i can design buildings that bring improvement to the country as well as
inspirational building to the peoples.

I was browsing through all the lecture notes and found out operant conditioning.
Operant conditioning was using reinforcement or punishment to strengthen or weaken a
particular behaviour.
I remembered how lazy i was when i was in my primary school. I didn’t skip any
classes but i keep on “forgetting’ to do my homework. But the truth is, i didn't forget to do
any homework, in fact thinking that myself was too good. My teacher kept on tolerating me
and giving me chance to do my homework. However, i was really lazy to think and do any
work.
Until one day, my teacher couldn’t tolerate me anymore and called my mother. My
mother was so angry and think that i embarrassed her. When we reach home, she started
scolding me and giving all the punishment i should be given. I couldn’t go out and play for
one month. I need to go to tuition after school everyday. The teachers at the tuition centre
were so fierce. Every one were scare of them.
I had no choice but to obey them. I did and hand in all my homework in time. My
school teacher was satisfied with my results and praised me for being a good kid. She
called my mother and told her about all my improvement. Since that day, i don’t need to go
to tuition centre anymore. I am given freedom to do my work in the house by myself. I can
even go out to play only after i had accomplished my homework.

‘A chip of an old block’. I think this idiom is very meaningful as it really reflects the
life of a child. Children learn things very fast and even perform them well. I had seen
families from all walk of lives.
I had this memory inside my head and it was there for a very long time. I forget
when was it, This child was scolding all sorts of bad words. It was deep down in my brain
because it was really shocking to hear a child saying bad words like that.
When i heard how his parents talk, i knew what happened. The parents had been a
bad influence to the kid. I bet the parents must had said all those bad and dirty words
everyday in the house and most importantly, in front of the kid. The kid had no-manners
and ill-tempered.
Besides that, while we were eating, i heard the parents scolding the child “ can u
stop playing your phone and come to have your dinner?”
The child answered back “ You also playing ma! Why you can play i cannot play?”
What i was thinking was, how can a parent expect a child to do something when the
parent themselves didn’t even do the right thing?
Hence, i thought that good education since young is very important and i think this
is due to observational learning in psychology.

It was Deepavali, a festival celebrated by the indians. I still remember since small,
my friends were taught that those with dark coloured skins are dangerous. I thought the
same until i knew my friends,
My friends are dark coloured skin. However, they are the nicest person i had ever
met. They are even more friendly than those who shared the same skin colour as me. My
friends always lend a hand when i need help. They were always there by my side, in case
i need their help.
Since small, if we ever saw any dark coloured skin human, automatically we will
avoid them. It’s like we already had a confirmation bias and schemas for them.
However, i always thought that they are human too. They have their rights too. We should
respect them.
We should’t be racist. Although our skin colours are different, we had the same
blood colour. We are all humans. We should be good to one another. If we don’t , who
will?

I think i might be a little emotional sometimes. When i was in a bad mood, i don’t
have the feel to talk, to joke and to do anything. When i am angry, i am not happy with
anything. However, i understand that i am not the only one that are emotional. My friends
do too!
I still remember that we were discussing about what to use for our assignment.
Seems like my friend had a bad day that day. I showed a few good idea but they were
rejected. I think t’s okay, maybe that idea is not god enough.
Then, i showed the idea of doing the Eiffel Tower from Paris, which shows the level
of construction. She rejected either. We sat and talked. We took a break and when to have
a walk around.
We went to my friend’s room and chill. My friend saw that we were very stressed for
being not able to think out of good idea. She jokes around finally that friend of me started
to become happy. She was more cheerful than before and not that emotional anymore.
The other friend of mine then started to help us give idea. She gave the same idea,
Eiffel Tower. My friend said that the idea was great. Although i was a little bit angry, but i
thought that sometimes, when someone is emotional or angry, she feels negative to
everything around it. I think this is the so called moods and emotions of human beings.

I think people in the society nowadays are very selfish, which are known as egoistic
model. We had a design exhibition today. From all the exhibition, it was already time you
can differentiate who are the true ones, who are the fake ones.
Before submission, my friend and i were discussing about the final model that we
are not satisfied with. Both of us were thinking, how can we come up with this model.
When did we discussed about this. We talked and found out that actually the other two
member had actually discussed before us. However, we were not informed.
I called one of them who was not with us that time. No one answered the call. My
friend and i had no choice. We pulled everything out and redo everything. We only had 4
more hours before submission. With the limit of 4 hours, we buckle up and do everything
as fast as we can.
Finally, we managed to finish the final product. We brought all of our models to the
gallery, waiting to be showed and presented. My friend called me and scolded me straight
away for not asking their permission in changing the model.
I called. No one answer. So, whose fault was that?

I was thinking what made the people nowadays to give help to someone
they don’t know. This might be a culture of some peoples in that specific place. This is
because i knew people nowadays will not give out help simply because they care about
themselves first.
I still remembered an accident which happened in front of a restaurant. The
accident was already there before i reached the accident. I have no idea how the accident
happened. The people around was taking photo instead of helping. I couldn’t reach
because it was too far away from me, with a big water damp in between.
A young man, come down of his car and started to give help. He pulled the victims
out of the broken car and moved them into his car so that he can drive the victims to the
nearest hospital. He couldn’t do that alone and another stranger came in to help, following
the third and the forth.
In psychology, i understand that this is known as modelling, which is used when we
observe other people, behave prosaically, and we are more likely to do the same. It will
be good if all the peoples around the world do this too.

  • 4. 18 August 2014 5.00 PM I had my first Social Psychology lecture today. The lecturer, Mr. Shankar taught us about confirmation bias. I didn't really understand what confirmation bias was until i did some research online.I understood and started to think how confirmation bias exactly took place in my life. When i was small, before my sister was born, i thought that my life was wonderful. With all the caring and love i could get. My mother gave extra love to me, accompanied and stayed by my side when i was sick. However, after my sister was born, i started to be alone. When i was sick, i find medicine by myself, never thought of telling my mother, thinking that she will know that i am sick. Unfortunately, she didn’t. I felt very sad. On the other hand, when my sister was sick, she stood by her side, fed her all the medicine and food. I know my parents thought i was old enough and independent enough to stand by myself. But i was still a kid. I didn't know much about getting all the medicine or anything by myself. I always thought that my parents were much more bias to my sister more than me. I always thought that they loved my sister more than me. From what i was taught, i understood that i always thought that my parents had confirmation bias towards me and my sister. However, i learnt to think maturely and more independently. When i grow older, only i knew that they wanted me to grow up, instead of spoon-feeding me. When i grow older, i learned that if they continue to spoon-feed me, i will never grow up. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 4

  • 7. 21 August 2014 8.00 PM I called my cousin just now. We talked a lot. He told me that one of his friend was addicted to cigarette. I asked him, how could this happen and he told me that his friend’s family is a bit complicated. He told me that the parent of his friend had divorced. The father had another woman outside, and was the main cause to their divorce.Child custody is normally granted to the mother. However, his father won the lawsuit and the child had no choice but to follow the father because his mother doesn’t have any job or stable income to raise the child. The child stayed with the step-mother at home everyday while the father went to work and will be home very late. The step-mother had very bad habits. She smoked and even gambled. The child then followed the step-mother footstep, causing the child to smoke and gamble. He thought that smoking was a very good habit as no one stopped him or tell him that smoking is bad. Before i hung up the phone, i advise my cousin about the effect of smoking. He say that he understood and promised me that he will never smoke. I flashed back to what Mr. Shankar taught and understood that was one of the example for social learning perspective. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 7

  • 10. 26 August 2014 1.00 AM We were having a campfire at the hostel that night and said about our experiences and what made us motivated. It was my turn and i thought of saying about my school results. During UPSR, i was too stubborn to listen to my mother in taking tuition for science. I told her that i believe i can score in science. She trusted me and i didn’t went to any tuition for science. Turned out i got 4A and 1B, and that B was science. She was disappointed with me and scolded me for getting bad results. I was so disappointed with my results and with my mother. She didn’t even consult me but keep on scolding me for getting bad result. After UPSR, it was PMR. She had high expectation on me too. Thinking that i would score all 7A’s. However, i failed her again. I only managed to score 3A’s and 4B. The 3A’s were English, Mathematics and surprisingly, Science. She gave up on me. But i didn’t. I still continues doing my studies and tuition to improve my results. I was very tired for the two years as i tuition non-stop. She didn’t say anything. I knew my malay sucks, i took class in two totally different genre class. My parents challenged me. My mother said, if i could score in SPM, she will give me money to travel to Korea. While my father said that he will buy me a laptop. I accepted their challenge. I scored 7A’s in my trial. However, that doesn’t means that i am good enough. I continued studying and studying, and i scored with flying color. I scored 2A+, 7A’s and 1A-. My SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 10

  • 14. 4 September 2014 8.45 PM Before we finished our secondary education, we were always asked what is our occupation. I had always dreamed of becoming a police since i was young. Reasons? My reasons are very easy. To achieve 0 crime rate country. I was very eager when it comes to running or marathon. I always joined this marathon and that running competition as i always thought to be a good police officer, stamina is very important. Until one day, i went to Singapore and saw many fascinating building. I was 100% attracted to it. I did research on what architect does and was really inspired by a quote said by Harry Seidler.” Architecture is not an inspirational business, it’s a rational procedure to do sensible and hopefully beautiful things; that’s all” This quotation made me felt inspired and was wondering should i choose architecture or to be a police. My parents recommended me to architecture because they knew i enjoyed drawing, designing and doing handcrafts. Hence, i chose to study in architecture so that i can design buildings that bring improvement to the country as well as inspirational building to the peoples. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 14

  • 17. 16 September 2014 10.30 PM I was browsing through all the lecture notes and found out operant conditioning. Operant conditioning was using reinforcement or punishment to strengthen or weaken a particular behaviour. I remembered how lazy i was when i was in my primary school. I didn’t skip any classes but i keep on “forgetting’ to do my homework. But the truth is, i didn't forget to do any homework, in fact thinking that myself was too good. My teacher kept on tolerating me and giving me chance to do my homework. However, i was really lazy to think and do any work. Until one day, my teacher couldn’t tolerate me anymore and called my mother. My mother was so angry and think that i embarrassed her. When we reach home, she started scolding me and giving all the punishment i should be given. I couldn’t go out and play for one month. I need to go to tuition after school everyday. The teachers at the tuition centre were so fierce. Every one were scare of them. I had no choice but to obey them. I did and hand in all my homework in time. My school teacher was satisfied with my results and praised me for being a good kid. She called my mother and told her about all my improvement. Since that day, i don’t need to go to tuition centre anymore. I am given freedom to do my work in the house by myself. I can even go out to play only after i had accomplished my homework. • 20. 25 September 2014 3.30 PM ‘A chip of an old block’. I think this idiom is very meaningful as it really reflects the life of a child. Children learn things very fast and even perform them well. I had seen families from all walk of lives. I had this memory inside my head and it was there for a very long time. I forget when was it, This child was scolding all sorts of bad words. It was deep down in my brain because it was really shocking to hear a child saying bad words like that. When i heard how his parents talk, i knew what happened. The parents had been a bad influence to the kid. I bet the parents must had said all those bad and dirty words everyday in the house and most importantly, in front of the kid. The kid had no-manners and ill-tempered. Besides that, while we were eating, i heard the parents scolding the child “ can u stop playing your phone and come to have your dinner?” The child answered back “ You also playing ma! Why you can play i cannot play?” What i was thinking was, how can a parent expect a child to do something when the parent themselves didn’t even do the right thing? Hence, i thought that good education since young is very important and i think this is due to observational learning in psychology. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 20

  • 23. 23 October 2014 12.00 AM It was Deepavali, a festival celebrated by the indians. I still remember since small, my friends were taught that those with dark coloured skins are dangerous. I thought the same until i knew my friends, My friends are dark coloured skin. However, they are the nicest person i had ever met. They are even more friendly than those who shared the same skin colour as me. My friends always lend a hand when i need help. They were always there by my side, in case i need their help. Since small, if we ever saw any dark coloured skin human, automatically we will avoid them. It’s like we already had a confirmation bias and schemas for them. However, i always thought that they are human too. They have their rights too. We should respect them. We should’t be racist. Although our skin colours are different, we had the same blood colour. We are all humans. We should be good to one another. If we don’t , who will? SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 23

  • 26. 4 November 2014 3.30 PM I think i might be a little emotional sometimes. When i was in a bad mood, i don’t have the feel to talk, to joke and to do anything. When i am angry, i am not happy with anything. However, i understand that i am not the only one that are emotional. My friends do too! I still remember that we were discussing about what to use for our assignment. Seems like my friend had a bad day that day. I showed a few good idea but they were rejected. I think t’s okay, maybe that idea is not god enough. Then, i showed the idea of doing the Eiffel Tower from Paris, which shows the level of construction. She rejected either. We sat and talked. We took a break and when to have a walk around. We went to my friend’s room and chill. My friend saw that we were very stressed for being not able to think out of good idea. She jokes around finally that friend of me started to become happy. She was more cheerful than before and not that emotional anymore. The other friend of mine then started to help us give idea. She gave the same idea, Eiffel Tower. My friend said that the idea was great. Although i was a little bit angry, but i thought that sometimes, when someone is emotional or angry, she feels negative to everything around it. I think this is the so called moods and emotions of human beings. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 26

  • 29. 6 November 2014 8.00 PM I think people in the society nowadays are very selfish, which are known as egoistic model. We had a design exhibition today. From all the exhibition, it was already time you can differentiate who are the true ones, who are the fake ones. Before submission, my friend and i were discussing about the final model that we are not satisfied with. Both of us were thinking, how can we come up with this model. When did we discussed about this. We talked and found out that actually the other two member had actually discussed before us. However, we were not informed. I called one of them who was not with us that time. No one answered the call. My friend and i had no choice. We pulled everything out and redo everything. We only had 4 more hours before submission. With the limit of 4 hours, we buckle up and do everything as fast as we can. Finally, we managed to finish the final product. We brought all of our models to the gallery, waiting to be showed and presented. My friend called me and scolded me straight away for not asking their permission in changing the model. I called. No one answer. So, whose fault was that? SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 29

  • 32. 9 November 2014 5.00 PM I was thinking what made the people nowadays to give help to someone they don’t know. This might be a culture of some peoples in that specific place. This is because i knew people nowadays will not give out help simply because they care about themselves first. I still remembered an accident which happened in front of a restaurant. The accident was already there before i reached the accident. I have no idea how the accident happened. The people around was taking photo instead of helping. I couldn’t reach because it was too far away from me, with a big water damp in between. A young man, come down of his car and started to give help. He pulled the victims out of the broken car and moved them into his car so that he can drive the victims to the nearest hospital. He couldn’t do that alone and another stranger came in to help, following the third and the forth. In psychology, i understand that this is known as modelling, which is used when we observe other people, behave prosaically, and we are more likely to do the same. It will be good if all the peoples around the world do this too. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FNBE 02/ 2014 32
