Was a Nun in a convent for 60 years.
Invested the money she earned from baking and
renting out properties , to the renovations of the
convent.
Gutrids de Escobar
Born in 1645
Free Mullata
Her aunt illegally sold her into slavery on a sugar
plantation
Was released from slavery once her debts were
repaid
3. The Women
Beatriz de Padilla
Lived from 1620-1650 in Lagos (New Spain)
She was a Morisca woman who was accused of
murdering someone and seducing men with magic.
Born into slavery but her first owner freed her.
Was going to inherit property from her white lover, but the
community as well as his mother and sister got angry and
didn’t like the idea of her receiving his estate.
Rachael Pringle-Polgreen
Lived in the 1700’s in Barbados, Spain
Was William Lauder’s slave daughter.
She worked with Lauder in his shop.
○ She ended up becoming a very successful business
owner (had her own hotel and tavern) and owned 19
slaves.

Juan de Morga
Was born in1627 in Oaxaca
Was Atanasio De Morga’s son.
○ Atansaio was a secular priest
○ Juan’s mother was an Afrian slave named Petrona
Was a slave to a vicious owner who hated him and treated him horribly.
○ “S” was branded on his face to signify he was a slave and forever would be one
Cristobal Bequer
Lived from 1693-1751 in Lima
Was the viceroyalty of Peru
After being accused of murdering an officer with his brother, they fled to the
mountains after hiding in a monastery for a while.
Became a priest in his early 20’s
In 1750 he was arrested but died before he could be sentenced.
Squanto
Lived during the early 17th century in colonial New England
Spoke Algonquian but learned English
Was captured in 1614 and sent to Spain as a slave for trade
1617 made his way from Spain to England
1619 was able to lead an expedition back to the New World (his homeland)

Algonquian of the Pamunky tribe
○ Kinsmen of Pocahontas
Decieved the English and won many battles during
1622-1644
John Smith threatened him (Probably because he
just wanted Pocahontas for himself… haha just
kidding..)
Jacob Young
Dutch mercenary, arrived in the Americas during the
17th century
Anticipated problems with the English so he
switched sides and became employed by them as a
helpful Indian interpreter and trader.

Red Shoes
Lived in the 18th century
○ Born into the role of a warrior for the Choctaw nation
Earned the rank of captain after the war with the Chickasaws.
Was murdered in 1747 by a tribe for the French.
Jospeh Rachel
Lived from 1716-1766 in Barbados, Spain
○ Born a slave but was set free at age 10
Often asked by young businessmen for his opinion and advice on their
work.
Married Elizabeth Cleaver and had 3 kids
Thomas Peters
Kidnapped from his home in Africa and sold into slavery and sent to
America in 1760
Escaped during the American Revolution and fought on side with the
English
Fled to Nova Scotia after the war ended and later created a colony for
relocating ex-slaves in Africa.
