Spain and England were engaged in the Anglo-Spanish War from 1585 to 1604 over trade monopolies and religious conflicts. The Spanish sent the Spanish Armada in 1588 to invade England, but it was defeated by storms and English naval attacks. Though Spain rebuilt its navy, England continued to win battles at sea until a peace treaty in 1604 ended the long war between the two nations.
