Slide strategies and genres in the english classes
1. Strategies and genres in
the English classes
The importance of the reading
strategies in differents genres
2. Check your concept of reading below
• Reading is a complex process. The meaning is in the text and I have to extract
it using reading strategies and trying to figure out which position the author is
holding by the use of convincing arguments, exciting description and true
exposition about the subject of his /her text. My role is simply to interpret what
he /she has written about.
• Although reading is a complex process, it is easy to understand and interpret
what the author has written about because I simply have to follow his /her
development of ideas, following the arguments and counter-arguments and
agreeing with him /her. My point is “if it is written and published, texts of
different genres (opinion articles, academic dissertation, web
news, biographies) always hold the truth and my role is to accept it.”
• Reading is a complex process. The meaning is not in the text – it has to be
negotiated in a process of interaction between each specific text (a piece of
news, an opinion article, an encyclopedia entry, an editorial) and me (mainly
based on my previous knowledge). My role is to question the arguments made
by the author and analyze the linguistic resources (such
as, adverbs, modals, verb tenses) he /she used to convey meaning. His /Her
position are usually marked by the choices he /she has made.
3. Having a purpose
* A clear purpose for reading a
text keeping in mind what the
reader expects to gain from that
specific text
6. Previous Knowledge
* The most important strategy above all.
Without prior knowledge of the subject
of a reading text, it is almost impossible
to comprehend it. The use of all the
other strategies depends on what you
already know.
7. Verbal and non-verbal information
*Use of all codes (verbal; visual, sound and
movement) in the process of meaning-
making out of different genres we are
surrounded by in print and in the digital
space
8. Cognates
*Use of words that are similar to
Portuguese (both in spelling and
meaning) that can help readers in the
negotiation of meaning. (Remember: we
have more cognates than false cognates).
9. Cohesive links
*Establishment of links inside a text, that
is, the references shown by pronouns,
adverbs, ellipsis, related words.
10. Inferences
*Identifying ideas that are not explicitly
stated, specifically based on your
previous knowledge of the world, of the
communicative intention of genres and
the ways they are organized in terms of
discursive and grammar resources.
11. -Look at the magazine covers below.
Skim them and check the statements
that are true about this genre.
A magazine cover …
12.
13. - Think and answer: What’s the main
communicavite function (intention) of a
magazine cover? Discuss with a partner.
14. A magazine cover ...
...indicates the magazine’s name and date of publication
…often contains short stories about its main theme.
…functions as an appealing display or card of the publication.
… holds catchy headlines usually in large letters that instigate
readers.
… is carefully planned to create a visual identity for the
publication.
… usually displays photos of well-known celebrities to attract
readers’ attention.
… provides detailed information about what the edition
contains
15. - Let’s now reflect about
the ideas of a well-known
researcher in the area of
digital technologies for
education, Mark Prensky.
Here is an excerpt from
the initial section of his
article, Digital Natives,
Digital Immigrants. On the
Horizon (MCB University Press, Vol. 9 No. 5,
October 2001). -
16. “ What should we call these “new” students of today? Some refer to them
as the N-[for Net]-gen or D-[for digital]-gen. But the most useful
designation I have found for them is Digital Natives. Our students today are
all “native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games
and the Internet.
So what does that make the rest of us? Those of us who were not born into
the digital world but have, at some later point in our lives, become
fascinated by and adopted many or most aspects of the new technology
are, and always will be compared to them, Digital Immigrants.
The importance of the distinction is this: As Digital Immigrants learn – like
all immigrants, some better than others – to adapt to their environment,
they always retain, to some degree, their "accent," that is, their foot in the
past. The “digital immigrant accent” can be seen in such things as turning
to the Internet for information second rather than first, or in reading the
manual for a program rather than assuming that the program itself will
teach us to use it. Today’s older folk were "socialized" differently from
their kids, and are now in the process of learning a new language. And a
language learned later in life, scientists tell us, goes into a different part of
the brain.”
17. * Skim the excerpt. What is it about?
* Scan the excerpt to find a definition for “digital native”.
Highlight it in yellow.
* Now, find a definition for “digital immigrant”. Highlight it
in blue.
* Now, answer: are you a digital “native” or “immigrant”?
Give reasons.
* Do you have any “digital immigrants” in your family?
Who? Why?
* Which digital resources do you usually use? Which web
tools are your favorite? Why?
* Compare your answers with a partner’s. Are they similar
or different? Which are the similarities? Which are the
differences?
18. Observe the graphics about the number of the users internet
according to language and population

28. From 1926, 19, until her death in 1954, this Mexican painter
created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her
turbulent life. She painted "pain and passion" using intense and
vibrant colors. Her style "close to folk art" was influenced by
indigenous cultures of Mexico, European Realism, Symbolism, and
Surrealism. Many of her paintings are self-portraits. Her work was
not widely recognized until decades after her death.
On June 21, 2001, she became the first Hispanic woman to be
honored with a U.S. postage stamp. In 2002, a film based on her
life was released. It grossed US$ 58 million worldwide.
29. Humanitarian work played an important part in her life, both
at home and abroad. Her interests were reflected in the
organizations of which she was Patron or President. She is
remembered for her devotion to all the causes she
supported, but particularly for her championing of hitherto
‘unpopular' causes - such as those suffering from HIV/AIDS;
those afflicted by Leprosy and those whose lives had been
devastated by landmines. She was not afraid to speak out and
show her support of those marginalised by society by
becoming actively involved in highlighting their plight. She
died in a car accident in 1997.
30. Portuguese novelist. Born on November 16, 1922, in Azinhaga, Portugal.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998 for his novel
Blindness — the first Portuguese-language book to receive the honor. His
novel was also turned into a critically acclaimed film in 2008, and
helped the author become known worldwide. A brash, opinionated author,
he moved to the Canary Islands in 1992 after the Portuguese
government refused to nominate his novel The Gospel According to Jesus
Christ for an EU literary prize. The government claimed the book was
offensive to Catholics; Saramago accused his government of censorship.
He died at the age of 87.
