Notes de l'éditeur
Using modular computer systems like CompactPCI has many advantages.
Based on open standards, a huge eco system is exisiting which offers flexibility in choosing the right supplier.
Flexibility is also given through hotswappability and the possibility to upgrade the systems performance with compatible successor boards.
Independent from any component availabilities, the life-cycles of CompactPCI systems can be therefore extended to form a future-safe solution.
The maintenance-friendliness of the 19“ mechanics together with the robust connection and conductive cooling possibilities are the ideal basis to build and offer solutions for harsh environments and for mission-critical applications.
CompactPCI® PlusIO (PICMG 2.30) is downward-compatible to CompactPCI® (PICMG 2.0).
It offers the modularity, robustness and economic efficiency of CompactPCI®, adding fast serial data transfer via a different connector from 3M with 5 Gbit/s.
The pin number is sufficient for leading 4 PCI Express® x1 links, 4 SATA, 4 USB 2.0 as well as 2 Ethernet 1000Base-T interfaces to the backplane. These new serial interfaces can either be wired via a rear I/O adapter or up to 4 new peripheral slots are added to the system backplane.
CompactPCI® PlusIO can be combined with existing CompactPCI® boards in hybrid systems which also offer the possibility to integrate boards with serial interconnects beside the parallel bus-based boards – an easy and cost-saving way to migrate to modern technologies like CompactPCI® Serial.
With CompactPCI® Serial (PICMG CPCI-S.0) the CompactPCI® architecture moves to serial high-speed interconnects.
The standard introduces a new rugged connector with a signal density of up to 184 pin pairs (on 3U) and transmission frequencies of 12 Gbit/s.
Each peripheral slot offers 1 PCI Express® link, 1 SATA/SAS and 1 USB 2.0/3.0 interface and supports up to 8 Ethernet interfaces to build a full mesh. The pin assignment of the system and the peripheral slot is congruent. This way it is possible to plug a system slot board into each peripheral slot to support symmetrical multiprocessing.
Ethernet is wired as a full mesh. A configuration of one system slot and up to eight peripheral slots does not need switches and bridges.
MTCA:
Switches and bridges – complex customized systems, expensive
VPX:
Switches and bridges – complex systems, expensive
The system slot supports 8 PCI Express® links, 8 SATA/SAS, 8 USB 2.0/3.0 and 8 Ethernet interfaces plus signals for general system management. It is supplied with 12 V. Each peripheral slot offers 1 PCI Express® link, 1 SATA/SAS and 1 USB 2.0/3.0 interface and supports up to 8 Ethernet interfaces to build a full mesh.
In all modular systems we use our own reliable power supplies. The have the same family concept like our CompactPCI CPU boards and fullfil all requirements of harsh and mobile applications.
The upgradeable CompactPCI family concept began with the Pentium M-based F14 and has continued up to the CompactPCI PlusIO-based F23P - also equipped with the fourth, or optionally , the fifth, generation i7.
For its CompactPCI and CompactPCI Serial families, MEN is relying on Intel’s tried and tested mobile series CPUs.
To ensure the CPUs will withstand harsh, demanding environmental conditions and to ensure they are resilient enough for the transportation market, they must incorporate a robust design as well as provide guaranteed long-term component availability, which means at least 10 years in the railway market.
Due to the scalability of the CompactPCI and CompactPCI Serial family, existing systems can forever be equipped with the latest processor platform and are therefore protected from component obsolescence.
All CompactPCI boards are designed to work in an extended temperature range and use soldered components making the electronics restistant against shock and vibration. Through conformal coating you can protect them against humity.
Conductive cooling is always possible – using COTS cards…
Standard and Custom Solutions
MEN does both, standard and custom (and everything between)
The technology for standard products (show on the web) and full custom is close
For full custom solution, MEN has a rich base of standard products (this lowers the cost and minimizes the risk)
MEN is flexible – technically but also time-wise (because there is always the possibility to shift standard products..)
It is MEN's goal to find the most cost-effective solution for the application to be implemented. While using as many standard COTS components as possible, parts of the solution may include customization on:
System level
Board level
Component level (in FPGA)
Whether we deliver standard products or full custom developments or a mixture of both, MEN always guarantees:
Hardware design according to the V-Model
Software experience to optimize the performance of the hardware
Production knowledge to allow reliable production of highly integrated circuitry
Logistics support in order to deliver on time at any time
The understanding of applicable standards to meet the requirements of the different markets, e.g., EN 50129 (railways) or DO-254 (aerospace)
We really can guarantee fulfilling the environmental standards
Our products are designed for and tested resp. during the development – we do not try to get it fit later
We do a lot in house – lower risk, lower cost
EMV immunity
Electrostatic discharge immunity - ESD
Electrical fast transient immunity - BURST
Electrical surge current immunity - SURGE
Conducted disturbances immunity - BCI
Scalability on all processor platforms
