2. Two fundamentals in tennis are grips and
serves. We will talk about the types of grips you
use and when to use them.
We will also be talking about which serves to
use when you’re in your match play.
3. Continental Grip
• The continental Grip is the best grip for people
who serve a kick serve and for a doubles
match.
4. Western Grip
• The western grip is best used for the players of
advanced skills. A lot of college players use the
western grip. Western grip is a huge over grip
of the racket. When you hit the ball with the
racket sideways it creates very good spin.
5. Eastern Grip
• Eastern grip is for young players. The eastern
grip is griping the racket in a manner that is
most natural and comfortable for you. Most
players in junior high and high school use an
eastern grip when playing.
6. Power Grip
• The power grip is for the most advanced
player. For example, Roger Federer uses a
power grip. The power grip is good for people
who hit flat and have a flat or heavy serve.
Many pros use this grip.
7. Kick Serve
• The kick serve is designed to make your
opponent miss the return. The kick serve is for
the real advanced players. It has such a heavy
spin on the serve it kicks up to the opponents
head. This serve is very effective for a lot of
older high school and college players. The kick
serve is used as a deadly weapon in
someone's serving options.
8. Slice Serve
• The slice serve is for players who do not hit
with a lot of power or pace. This serve sends
the returner out wide off the court to return
the serve which gives the server time to place
the ball anywhere on the court. The players
that use the slice serve are players who can
place the ball very well.
9. Flat Serve
• The flat serve is a serve that is hit without
turning the racket to angle the ball which
gives a hard serve that is very quick and spins
really slowly. The most common serve for
college tennis players is the flat serve because
it aces the opponent.
10. Conclusion
• The most fundamental components of playing
tennis are grips and serves. Knowing what kind of
grips and service options, and when to use them,
gives a skilled player more options and keeps the
opponent guessing which is a huge advantage to
a player.
• Once you have mastered these two fundamentals
you are on your way to becoming a good tennis
player.
