6. I want a curriculum that... … focuses on subject knowledge, skills and understanding … shows how subjects link together.
7. I want a curriculum that... … allows pupils to talk about issues from a range of different perspectives … allows pupils to talk about issues based on personal experiences
What is the DEP? Breif explanation as to who the DEP is.
Before we start exploring the global dimension and the cross curricular dimension lets take a second to think what education is for… I have 3 quotes that presents different perspective on education. Actually I want to add one more is education for economic growth, is it to improve an individuals economical situation. How many of you agree with the first quote, second, third and fourth. As you can see there is many different reasons for the purpose of education but also it depends on your own background and maybe also what country. Is it education’s role to change the world? Which of these do you agree with?
Interactive starter activity to explore the role of education. Should take about 10 mins. Lets see what we as a collective decide a curriculum should include, and look like…. So should we have a curriculum that promotes consensus etc or prepares individuals to… or something in between... Or note sure… lets see how many of you think we should have a curriculum that…….. What is the role of education? What are we trying to create? What should it look like?
As you can see it’s not that clear cut, but sometimes the two can link, let’s say you have 30 pupils and each of them have tells their story you will probably have different perspectives, so one doesn’t necessarily exclude the other, each and one of them have different upbringings and experiences and carry their own luggage's, but in certain areas with little interaction from other parts of the society and to bring in that diversity can be very beneficial for the young people. It all depends on the situation.
Of course we want young people to play a role in their local community but it’s important to make that local to global link, so they understand their role in the world. How our actions will affect other parts of the world and vice versa. What happens in other parts of the world will affect us.
Film Mindshift I’m just going to show you a short clip, which explores how much the world is changing. While you watching the clip just have these questions in your head…. It just shows how the world is constantly changing, even now this is probably out of date, what are the challenges you see in your role as teachers? It’s a really difficult task you have as teachers, to prepare our pupils for what we don’t know, how can we do that….
How does the National Curriculum prepare young people for these changes? The big picture tackles…
How many of you have seen this? There are 7 dimensions to the cross curriculum and shows where the subjects can meet, you will see in a bit that it slots in nicely to the Global dimensions Image Puzzel – each subject has a piece of the puzzel, but it’s only when we bring them together we can see the whole picture, and we got a responsibility towards our young people to help them understand how these link together. It’s also part of working together in schools, there are 300 people why not work together
Why show this, each subject see things differently....
Why this? If we bring the subjects together we can see more than what first meet the eye, and develop our understanding.
Purpose of curriculum dimensions is to make sense of key issues in today’s world. Highlight the idea that dimensions can be taught across subjects. Not trying to force links, but if you look close enough it’s quite easy to link subjects together, maybe through themes
It’s about working togther… as mentioned before Each dimension is broken down into: What it is trying to achieve Key questions that could be explored What the outcome of this might be on learners Opportunities for the dimension to be applied

With this in mind, what questions should young people explore? 5 min brainstorm Why is the Global dimension important in education? Changing world, more information through a range of channels and exposed to it on a daily basis, breakfast etc… Internet, sport we have a divers society.. A range of global connections.
What kind of a learner would this dimension help to develop? Considering the clip, the big picture and everything we said up til now 5 minutes to discuss in pairs.
Before curriculum dimensions existed in the NC, the Dfes produced guidance ‘Developing the Global Dimension in the School Curriculum’ Same way cross curriculm have 7 dimensions so does the GD Have many have seen this, think of your subject which one would link
Teaching about the GD is not just delivering a topic, it should also embrace a different style of teaching.
