4. Egyptian edible oils sector is has a distinguished rank in the agricultural
sector.
Edible oil products have existed since ancient Egypt and were only afforded
by the royalty, religious men, and wealthy.
The first factory extracted cottonseed oil was established in 1888.
The modern edible oils industry started in 1920.
Progressive expansion of the private sector took places since 1977.
Increase in edible oils consumption created a gap between its supply and
demand.

5. Egypt's production of edible vegetable oils has been suffering several
challenges.
Egypt suffers a severe shortage in the production of oilseeds.
Actually Egypt is relying on imported raw materials.
Cotton, soybean and sunflower are the main domestic production of
edible oils crops.
Total Investments in the edible oils sector more than to 15 billion EGP.
The edible oils sector in Egypt has attracted international investment
e.g (Savola, Arma, Iffco, Migop…..etc).

7. Current estimated annual growth rate of oil production is 7%.
Egypt’s annual oilseed crushing capacity is 8,000 T/day.
Cotton oil production at 13,000 T in 2017.
Sunflower oil production at 29,000 T in 2017.
Soybean oil production at 336,000 T in 2017.
Total Egyptian refining capacity for vegetable seed oils and palm oil is
currently estimated at 1.5 MT/year.
All palm oil is delivered in refined form and requires minimal processing
before being packaged, mainly post/bleaching and re/deodorization.

10. Local Egyptian oils production covers about 5% of the consumption.
Vegetable oils in Egypt are consumed in liquid & artificial ghee.
Annual oil consumption is about 2.18 million tons.
Annual growth in oil market is estimated at 8%.
Annual Per capita consumption is about 23 kg /year.
Around 68 million Egyptians rely on government subsidies smartcards.
The large youth population are using more western style snacks and
switching over to fast moving consumer goods and processed food .

11. Palm oil is the most consumed oil in Egypt.
Egypt the major consumer of palm oil in the Middle East.
Palm oil is consumed individually or for industrial purposes.
Palm oil maintains its market share due to competitive pricing.
Palm stearin is imported as a substitute for tallow in the manufacture of soap.
Oil consumption in 2017:
- Palm oil 861,000 Ton.
- Sunflower 570,000 Ton.
- Soybean 521,000 Ton.
- Corn oil 44,ooo Ton.

15. Most of Egypt's oils exports are of olive oil, Soybean oil,
cottonseed oil and soybean meal.
80% of total exports are to Arab countries in terms of value. The
remaining 20% were split among the EU and non-Arab African
countries.
The basket of imported oils products: palm oil, Sunflower oil, and
soybean oil.
The average price for the last year:
• Sunflower oil’s is 970 $ /Ton.
• Soybean oil is 745 $ /Ton.
• Palm oil is 672 $ /Ton.
