In 2012, there were 647 films released in the UK, with 67 being thrillers. Thrillers made up 12 of the top 20 highest grossing films that year. The top 3 films were Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, and Marvel's Avengers Assemble. Skyfall was the most successful because it was highly anticipated and well marketed, including the promotion of its theme song. All three top films were part of established film series, allowing producers to make more money from viewers who enjoyed earlier installments wanting to see how the story continues. Thrillers made over $1.5 billion in profits that year. The target audience for these top films were young adults who were already fans of the series. However
1. Institutional Research
There were around 647 films released in the UK in 2012, 67
of them falling into the thriller genre. The thriller industry
made 12 of the top 20 films of 2012. The top film produced
was Skyfall. After that came The Dark Knight Rises and
Marvel Avengers Assemble. Skyfall was the most successful
film because it was a highly anticipated, well marketed film.
The audience awaited its arrival which was accompanied by
a song called Skyfall by Adele. This song was played and
repeated on many radio stations across the country, and the
casting list was also released to the public. All three of the
most popular films are part of a series of films which have
been released over a long period of time. This helps the
producers make more money, because people who enjoyed
the first film will want to watch the second.
2. The audience for all three of these films are young adults, because they are the ones who
have seen the first couple of films and understand the story. However, because they are
aimed at younger adults and children, it can interest a new audience of a younger age
because even though they haven't seen the first original film in the series, they can
understand the story line of the new film and would like to follow the series in future. The
amount that thriller film profits totalled to a staggering $1,521,095,781.

3. Conclusion
This research shows me that my film should
have the potential to be followed by a sequel,
because those are the films that make the most
money. They interest film companies because
they end on a cliffhanger, and they can raise
money and then put it into a new film which
will take even more money because it's highly
anticipated. My film should end with a
cliffhanger, because these films attract an
audience who are willing to pay to see the next
one to find out what happens. Some of the top
films are very futuristic themes, such as super
heroes and vampires. I could also use this as an
idea for a thriller film because this is what
interests the audience the most. However, I
need to be careful not to make it look like more
of a horror film as this is not what the task
states.
