3. INTRODUCTION
Image processing is a method to perform
some operations on an image.
We get enhanced image or to extract some
useful information from it.
It is a type of signal processing in which
input is an image and output maybe
image or characteristics associated with
that image.
Nowadays, image processing is among
rapidly growing technologies.
4. WHY WE NEED
IMAGE
PROCESSING?
• Since the digital image is “invisible” it
must be prepared for viewing on one
or more output device.
• The digital image can be optimized
for the application by enhancing or
altering the appearance of structures
within it.
• It might be possible to analyze the
image in the computer.
5. PURPOSE OF
IMAGE
PROCESSING
The purpose of image processing is divided into 5
groups. They are:
1. Visualization - Observe the objects that are
not visible.
2. Image sharpening and restoration - To create
a better image.
3. Image retrieval - Seek for the image of
interest.
4. Measurement of pattern – Measures various
objects in an image.
5. Image Recognition – Distinguish the objects in
an image
6. TYPES OF IMAGE PROCESSING

7. ANOTHER TYPES
OF IMAGE
PROCSSING
• Image-to-image
transformations
• Image-to-information
transformations
• Information-to-image
transformations
8. COMPONENTS OF IMAGE PROCESSING
• Image Sensors: Digital processing requires images to be obtained in the form
of electrical signals
-There are many ways to convert images into digital numbers. Here, we will
focus on video technology
• Image Displays: Most computers use color monitors that have much higher
resolution than a television set.
- Smaller phosphor dots, a higher frequency scan, and a single progressive scan
produce much greater sharpness and color purity.
• Software Requirements: Adobe Photoshop , Corel Draw , Serif Photoplus
• Hardware Requirements : High-resolution image display, sufficient memory
transfer bandwidth, sufficient storage space, and sufficient computing power.
9. ADVANTAGES &
DISADVANTAGES
OF IMAGE
PROCESSING
ADVANTAGES:
• This one is more accurate than the
overlapping method because it is based
upon minutia.
• It is an interactive method for recognizing
fingerprints.
DISADVANTAGES :
• It is more time consuming as compared to
the former.
• More complex program.
10. VARIOUS TECHNIQUES OF IMAGE
PROCESSING
• Geometric Transformation
• Image Smoothing
• Contrast Enhancement
11. GEOMETRIC TRANSFORMATION
• Geometric Transformation are simply alignments done on images.
• Helps to collect the exact appearance of an objects.
3 types of Geometric Transformation:
(I)Translation
(II)Rotation
(III)Scaling
12. TYPES
• TRANSLATION: Axes of individual are displayed by their respective
displacement factor.
• ROTATION: It is one type of alignment where an image is rotated w.r.t
different axes with different angles.
• SCALING: Operation axes of individuals are multiplied by respective scaling
factor.
13. IMAGE
SMOOTHING
• It is a technique to reduce noise
in a digital image.
• Usually applied to diminish the
spurious noise.
3 types of Image Smoothing:-
(I)Low pass filtering
(II)Gaussian filtering
(III)Median filtering
14. TYPES
• LOW PASS FILTERING: Since noise contribute in high frequency
component so LPF is used to suppress such high frequency component to
remove those noises.
• GAUSSIAN FILTERING: The filter can be used to soften edges, and to
filter out spurious noise in an image.
• MEDIAN FILTERING: It is very effective to remove impulse noise.
15. CONTRAST ENHANCEMENT
• Processing an image means to enhance certain features of that image.
• One of the defect found in images is its poor contrast due to inadequate
lighting, aperture size, shutter speed, etc.
2 types of Contrast Enhancement:-
(I)Histogram
(II)Histogram equalization
16. TYPES
• HISTOGRAM: It gives global
description of an image.
• HISTOGRAM
EQUALIZATION: It means
increasing dynamic range of
the gray level.
17. WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF IMAGE
PROCESSING
• GAMING
• ROBOTIC
• IMAGE ENHANCING
