Eco-profiles
maichau.ecolodge .asia
This Eco Profile is made by 100% Recycled Paper.
About Mai Chau Ecolodge Mai Chau Ecolodge is located on Pom Pu Hill, far from the bustling Mai Chau district.
What is an Ecolodge?
An eco lodge is an ecologically-themed resort which provides accommodation.
Eco lodges differ from traditional hotels in being structurally designed to reduce
environmental impact. Also, eco lodges help finance the local community...
Eco lodges reduce their carbon footprint by using non-toxic cleaners, renewable
energy sources (such as solar or wind energy), and gray water. Other techniques to reduce
emissions include using organic local food, energy efficient lighting, non-disposable plates,
eco-friendly forms of transport, and reused towels.
An ecolodge is a facility which is designed to accommodate ecotourists, who are
interested in traveling in a ecologically-friendly way.
Ecotourism is also referred to as “sustainable tourism” and “green tourism”
Visitors at the lodge can get a spectacular view of the valley from nearly any angle since it
is situated in one of the best places in the entire region.
Mai Chau Ecolodge developers have paid much attention to the tangible and intangible
factors throughout every phase of the building project - from conception to completion.
We believe that an ecolodge needs to meet four important requirements: closeness to na-ture,
environment protection, cultural development and responsible tourism.

1.1 Overview architecture:
Viewed from a distance, Mai Chau Ecolodge looks like an ancient Thai village, completed with quaint stilt
houses, exquisite palm tree roofs and luxuriant green trees. The main stilt house was based on the idea of the
House for Lang - a mandarin of Thai people. The other bungalows belong to locals around the village. Mai
Chau Ecolodge honors the poetic beauty of Mai Chau valley. It is ideally suited for those who want to travel
back in time.

1.2 Local materials:
Mai Chau was built with native construction materials, including both wood and stone.
Stone for toilet and behind garden wall:
When building roads from Hanoi to Mai
Chau, construction companies razed the
mountain to get raw material. We took
advantage of the remnants for building
the toilets and garden wall. This stone has
natural grain, can be easily divided into
small pieces from 3 to 5 cm thick. The ma-terial
cost is very cheap and frequently
used.
4 maichau.ecolodge.asia The windows to Mai Chau 5
Stone for courtyard:
The natural stone usually ap-pears
at the edge of streams
or rivers on the mountainside.
These rocks were eroded by
water over millions of years, and
then mingled with soil when the
channel was diverted. This kind
of stone was used for courtyard
construction.
Loi tree ceiling:
We use Loi tree to decorated
the ceiling of bungalow. It’s a
kind of bamboo but only grow
in Mai Chau & Moc Chau
(diameter 2 cm).
Palm tree roof:
In the past, Thai people in Mai
Chau did not use brick as con-struction
materials. Most of stilt
houses were made of bamboo
with palm tree roofing. A palm
tree only produces about 4- 5
leaves per year. We purchased
10-50 year old palm trees from
local people to make roofs for
Mai Chau Ecolodge complex.
Bathtub:
Jackfruit wood is a
water- resistant timber that was
used to construct the bathtubs.
This wood was milled by local
craftsmen in Ha Tay province.
6 maichau.ecolodge.asia The windows to Mai Chau 7
Sinks:
Excellent bathrooms with vessel
sinks made from stone cubes
1.3 Local trees:
All kinds of native trees were used at Mai Chau. The combination among ordinary plants creates a poetic
landscape for the ecolodge. Here are the most popular trees:
Alocasia macrorrhiza:
The Alocasia macrorrhiza has
scientific name: Homalomena
amoraticae, one family of Ara-ceae.
It is also known as Son
Thuc. Per root contains a ca-pacity
of 0.8 - 1% pale yellow oils,
40% linalool, a little Terpinol and
approximately 2% lynalyl ace-tate
esters. This tree is commonly
used to treat low bone aches
veins, paralyzed or twitching, ar-thritis,
joint pain, stomach pain,
digestive disorder.
The Giang Ong tree:
The “Giang Ong” tree has scientific name Pleomele
Cochinchinensis Merr (Dracaena Loureiri Gagnep), a
species of tree in the Allianceae genus of the onion
family. This is a small plant, about 1- 1,5m high and
can reach 2- 3 m when perennial. Body distributes
branches, with a diameter of about 1.6-2cm to 20-
25cm. Leaves have sword- shaped, averaging 25- 80
cm long, 4 cm wide. Local people use to treat con-gestive
cases, wounds, and to relieve bruising.
The jackfruit:
The jackfruit, has scientific name Artocarpus hetero-phyllus,
is a species of tree in the Artocarpus genus of
the mulberry family (Moraceae). The jackfruit tree is
a widely cultivated and popular food item in tropical
regions of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South-east
Asia region. The flesh of the jackfruit is starchy
and fibrous and is also a source of dietary fiber. Jack-fruit
is commonly used in Southeast Asian cuisines.
The wood of the tree is useful for making musical
instruments, furniture, doors and windows, and roof
construction.
Vine frame:
Its scientific name is Tristellateia australis. It derived
from the tropical Asian countries, is a creeper with
long branches. Leaves are thick, smooth and glossy
blue. Flower has medium size, 5 yellow wings and red
pistil. The tree can be planted by seed, grows fast
and is ideally-suited for climbing fence rows.

1.4 Living accommodations:
We chose living arrangements as close to nature and ecological as possible. Here are some examples:
Fresh bottled water:
We have a separate water treatment system which meets the qualifications for food hygiene and safety.
This water is contained in a reusable sterile glass bottle.
Waste bin:
Made of bamboo by local people
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
We decided to invest in environmentally-friendly energy sources in the design phase.
2.1 Solar Energy
- All outdoor lighting systems use solar energy. They
are charged during the day and used at night.
- All the lights in the room are prioritized using solar
energy. When solar energy runs out, the national
electric grid will be automatically used instead.
- The hot water in the room is integrated by two
systems, preference given to solar energy. If not
enough, then it can use the national electricity grid.
2.2 Water Resources
Current water resources are derived from limestone
deposits about 1000m away from the lodge. We
drilled a natural cave, just 20m from the ground with
sufficient volume for thousands of households to use.
Although the natural water is safe enough to drink,
we advise you not to drink tap water, but use our
bottled water instead (we had thoroughly treated
before bottling).
2.3 Wastewater Treatment
We divided into two types of wastewater for
treatment:
l Organic wastewater:
Wastewater from visitors and employees is refined
through 2-3 floors of septic tanks, absorbed in the hills
and flows into the paddy fields. This wastewater is
used by the trees.
l Inorganic wastewater:
Included laundry soap and chemical detergents. We
built a separate wastewater treatment facility which
flows into the environment. This water is not harmful
for the plants , based on our testing.
10 maichau.ecolodge.asia The windows to Mai Chau 11
2.4 Biomass Energy
50% of gases for cooking originated from biological
technologies (Biomass). We collect rice husks and sawdust, plus
leaves and garbage and place them into a biomass furnace.
The pale smoke which contains carbon monoxide, is forced
into gas stoves and burned as gas fossil. Flame speed can be
adjusted accordingly. This technology has been used by many
Vietnamese farmers for a long time.
Cultural preservation
Local culture has played an influential role in the Mai Chau Ecolodge, from constructions to service
standards. It satisfies a growing demand for traditional tourism experiences and improves local
culture, conservation, and development.
3.1 Architecture of Thai culture:
The basic architecture of the restaurant and bungalow is based on the the stilt houses of ethnic Thai culture.
Bungalow:
Bungalow frame modeled on
the stilt house of Thai people
was made of concrete to
ensure durability of the
construction materials.
Interior Decoration:
We used Thai motifs as much
as possible for the room
decorations.
12 maichau.ecolodge.asia The windows to Mai Chau 13
3.2 Staff’s Uniform:
Mai Chau is home to three
ethnic groups: Thai (majority),
H’Mong and Dao. Most staffs
at the lodge are Thai peole.
The costumes were divided
into three specific types to
help guests clearly understand
about division among ethnic
group.
3.3 Culture activities:
In the festivals, ethnic people
such as Thai, Dao, H’Mong
organize many cultural
activities like dancing, prais-ing,
and singing. At Mai Chau
Ecolodge, traditional dance is
conducted every day for
tourists.
3.4 Local foods:
Guests are served fresh and nutritious meals every day from local suppliers.
14 maichau.ecolodge.asia The windows to Mai Chau 15
RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
SUSTAINABLE TOURISM (or RESPONSIBLE TOURISM) is a new trend in the industry which provides parallel
benefits for visitors and local citizens without harming the environment. Mai Chau Ecolodge’s operation is
based on the principles of sustainable tourism.
4.1 Responsible tourism
v Create jobs for local peole:
Mai Chau Ecolodge employs mostly Thai people that live in the valley.
v Support local culture conservation:
In addition to preservation of intangible culture such as traditional dance, music, we plan to set up a display
room which focuses on the Thai people for tourists to admire. However, it will take a lot of time to create a
collection of ancient and traditional items.
v Charity:
We will donate a portion of our profits to help local residents overcome poverty, via educational assistance.
v Environmental Protection:
We will organize regular “Clean-up Days” at Mai Chau, thus allowing our employees and visitors to participate
in projects such as litter removal or tree planting. This practical work is designed to improve environmental
awareness of protecting local culture.

  • 6. 1.4 Living accommodations: We chose living arrangements as close to nature and ecological as possible. Here are some examples: Fresh bottled water: We have a separate water treatment system which meets the qualifications for food hygiene and safety. This water is contained in a reusable sterile glass bottle. Waste bin: Made of bamboo by local people ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION We decided to invest in environmentally-friendly energy sources in the design phase. 2.1 Solar Energy - All outdoor lighting systems use solar energy. They are charged during the day and used at night. - All the lights in the room are prioritized using solar energy. When solar energy runs out, the national electric grid will be automatically used instead. - The hot water in the room is integrated by two systems, preference given to solar energy. If not enough, then it can use the national electricity grid. 2.2 Water Resources Current water resources are derived from limestone deposits about 1000m away from the lodge. We drilled a natural cave, just 20m from the ground with sufficient volume for thousands of households to use. Although the natural water is safe enough to drink, we advise you not to drink tap water, but use our bottled water instead (we had thoroughly treated before bottling). 2.3 Wastewater Treatment We divided into two types of wastewater for treatment: l Organic wastewater: Wastewater from visitors and employees is refined through 2-3 floors of septic tanks, absorbed in the hills and flows into the paddy fields. This wastewater is used by the trees. l Inorganic wastewater: Included laundry soap and chemical detergents. We built a separate wastewater treatment facility which flows into the environment. This water is not harmful for the plants , based on our testing. 10 maichau.ecolodge.asia The windows to Mai Chau 11
  • 7. 2.4 Biomass Energy 50% of gases for cooking originated from biological technologies (Biomass). We collect rice husks and sawdust, plus leaves and garbage and place them into a biomass furnace. The pale smoke which contains carbon monoxide, is forced into gas stoves and burned as gas fossil. Flame speed can be adjusted accordingly. This technology has been used by many Vietnamese farmers for a long time. Cultural preservation Local culture has played an influential role in the Mai Chau Ecolodge, from constructions to service standards. It satisfies a growing demand for traditional tourism experiences and improves local culture, conservation, and development. 3.1 Architecture of Thai culture: The basic architecture of the restaurant and bungalow is based on the the stilt houses of ethnic Thai culture. Bungalow: Bungalow frame modeled on the stilt house of Thai people was made of concrete to ensure durability of the construction materials. Interior Decoration: We used Thai motifs as much as possible for the room decorations. 12 maichau.ecolodge.asia The windows to Mai Chau 13
