may not be aware On Broadway closed its doors at the end of October 2011 due to the
holding company going insolvent! On Broadway will rise again one day, hopefully sooner
rather than later, once the perfect premises have been found and we, hopefully, find
some sponsors. Running a privately owned theatre in South Africa with no funding during
a recession is crippling. All we wish to do is provide the platform for new and upcoming
artistes as well as the favourite established artistes as we have always done, but sadly
money talks! We don‘t want to lose touch with any of you so we will keep you up to date
on what is happening in our world, particularly at our fabulous restaurant Café
Manhattan situated in De Waterkant, just behind the Cape Quarter. To be part of our
mailing list until On Broadway re-opens please let us know or if you have any queries
please email info@manhattan.co.za.

Friday, 11th May Villiera wines paired dinner at the Vineyard Hotel & Spa. Roy
Davies, General Manager of the Vineyard explains, ―We will host two wine-paired dinner
events each month, where winemakers from farms such as Villiera will have the
opportunity to present their wines. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to
book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and
resident guests,‖ says Davies. ―Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the
evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So whether
you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the
experience is bound to be a memorable one.‖ Each wine-paired dinner is either four- or
five-course, depending on the wines served. ―Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting
where The Square‘s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well
as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It‘s an opportunity to taste the
wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in
question,‖ Davies explained. ―The combination of the tasting session and then
experiencing the end product – the actual dinner – is a fascinating journey, allowing us
to ensure that the end-product is always of the absolute highest standard, something we
believe our guests will experience with every paired event.‖ The cost of the dinners is
R265 pp for the four-course and R315 pp for the five-course. Davies and his team have
also put together exclusive stay-over packages that include the dinner for guests
attending the events. For the five-course dinner, a single room is R950, while a double
room is R800 per person sharing. For the four-course paired dinner, a single room is R900
and a double room is R750 per person sharing. For more information or to make a

Sunday, 13th May: Treat Mom to a mouth-watering Mother's Day lunch at The
Vineyard Hotel & Spa, Colinton Rd, Newlands. The Square‘s executive chef, Alex
Docherty, has opted for a choice between two starter options — roasted duck spring rolls
with lime and ginger dipping sauce or prawn and avocado inside-out roll with wasabi
mayonnaise and teriyaki dressing. Moving on to mains, diners can choose between a
slow-roasted leg of lamb with roast potatoes, pumpkin puree and fine beans with onion
and mint chutney and lamb gravy, or grilled local fish with tempura Asian salad and
sweet chilli butter sauce. An extensive wine list featuring some of South Africa‘s top
Wine estates adds another dimension to the culinary experience. The pièce de

sugared almond ice cream, or a Lindt chocolate crème brulée with frozen black cherry
sherbet. Each mom will also receive a complimentary surprise goodie bag from the
Vineyard Hotel & Spa. The price of the three-course Mother‘s Day lunch is R255 a

Sunday, 13th May. Treat your mom at Trees with a mouth-watering Mother's Day
lunch. Trees Restaurant at the Townhouse Hotel has lined up a delicious buffet lunch
menu for Mother's Day on 13th May. The restaurant's Michelin-trained executive chef
Stefan Schmidt has created a veritable Mother's Day feast. Diners can choose between
two heart-warming soups and a plated starter before tucking into an expansive buffet of
mains. Schmidt tells us more: "We've prepared a range of sumptuous main meals,
including slow-braised beef roulade in rosemary and mushroom gravy, Harissa-rubbed
West Coast hake fillet with lemon and coriander sauce, roasted baby potatoes with
sautéed onions and herbs, and baked ratatouille cannelloni with pecorino." Once guests
have had their fill at the buffet, the Mother's Day meal is rounded off with a Rooibos-
scented malva pudding with thick vanilla anglaise, caramelised apples and dark
chocolate ice cream, accompanied by tea or filter coffee. Trees underwent an extensive
redesign in 2010 under the guidance of leading interior designer Les Harbottle. The
restaurant overlooks a leafy avenue adjacent to the famed Dutch East India Company
Gardens. Thanks to its location on the hotel‘s first floor and its large glass windows, the
experience emulates that of being in a tree house. The 100-seater restaurant has a
contemporary look and feel with some striking red accent pieces, a few ladder-back
chairs, origami-inspired lampshades and an eye-catching installation at the restaurant‘s
entrance. The Mother's Day lunch menu costs R165 per person and bookings are
essential. Please email trees@townhouse.co.za or call 021 465 7050.

UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE:
until 15 July 2012. ART EXHIBITION: Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of
Herman Wald, SA Jewish Museum, 88 Hatfield Street Gardens Cape Town. Sunday to
Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 2pm. Sculptures, Sketches, Writings and Audio
Visual Displays. A major South African artist, Herman Wald is currently having his biggest
exhibition in Cape Town, forty two years after his death and the digital-age
retrospective breaks new grounds in the Arts market, offering online global access to the
entire collection and its catalogue. The Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of
Herman Wald is on exhibit at the South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town until 15 July
2012. On show are almost 60 sculptures, more than 40 sketches, writings and audio
visual displays. Gallery hours are Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm and Fridays 10am to
2pm. Sculptor Herman Wald would have approved of the bold initiative, said his son
Louis Wald who was only twelve years old when his father died, leaving a legacy of over
650 castings of his works but little money to sustain his family in Johannesburg.
Hungarian-born, Herman Wald the son of a Rabbi, challenged the Orthodox Jewish
restriction against carved images of the human form. After studying, doing
apprenticeships and working in Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London he moved to
South Africa in 1937 to escape the persecutions of the Nazi era and established his
studio in Johannesburg. The death of his mother and her family in a concentration camp
during the Second World War motivated him to produce a series of public works which
confirmed his standing in the Arts world. The first, entitled Symbol for Chaos and Hope,
and known as Kria, is the rendering of garments and a symbol of Jewish mourning,
originating from biblical days and still practiced today. Admission Fees to the Museum
and exhibition are: Adults R 40, South African Pensioners and students R25, Children
under 16 years of age free. Valid Identification Required. The Museum caters for group
tours by prior arrangement.

On Broadway will rise again one day, hopefully sooner rather than later, once the perfect premises have been found and we, hopefully, find some sponsors. Running a privately owned theatre in South Africa with no funding during a recession is crippling. All we wish to do is provide the platform for new and upcoming artistes as well as the favourite established artistes as we have always done, but sadly money talks! We don‘t want to lose touch with any of you so we will keep you up to date on what is happening in our world, particularly at our fabulous restaurant Café Manhattan situated in De Waterkant, just behind the Cape Quarter. To be part of our mailing list until On Broadway re-opens please let us know or if you have any queries please email info@manhattan.co.za. Friday, 4th to Sunday, 6th May. Roy Davies, General Manager of the Vineyard explains, ―We will host two wine-paired dinner events each month, where winemakers from farms such as Villiera will have the opportunity to present their wines. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and resident guests,‖ says Davies. ―Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So whether you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the experience is bound to be a memorable one.‖ Each wine-paired dinner is either four- or five-course, depending on the wines served. ―Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting where The Square‘s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It‘s an opportunity to taste the wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in question,‖ Davies explained. ―The combination of the tasting session and then experiencing the end product – the actual dinner – is a fascinating journey, allowing us to ensure that the end-product is always of the absolute highest standard, something we believe our guests will experience with every paired event.‖ The cost of the dinners is R265 pp for the four-course and R315 pp for the five-course. Davies and his team have also put together exclusive stay-over packages that include the dinner for guests attending the events. For the five-course dinner, a single room is R950, while a double room is R800 per person sharing. • 5. Sunday, 13th May. Treat your mom at Trees with a mouth-watering Mother's Day lunch. Trees Restaurant at the Townhouse Hotel has lined up a delicious buffet lunch menu for Mother's Day on 13th May. The restaurant's Michelin-trained executive chef Stefan Schmidt has created a veritable Mother's Day feast. Diners can choose between two heart-warming soups and a plated starter before tucking into an expansive buffet of mains. Schmidt tells us more: "We've prepared a range of sumptuous main meals, including slow-braised beef roulade in rosemary and mushroom gravy, Harissa-rubbed West Coast hake fillet with lemon and coriander sauce, roasted baby potatoes with sautéed onions and herbs, and baked ratatouille cannelloni with pecorino." Once guests have had their fill at the buffet, the Mother's Day meal is rounded off with a Rooibos- scented malva pudding with thick vanilla anglaise, caramelised apples and dark chocolate ice cream, accompanied by tea or filter coffee. Trees underwent an extensive redesign in 2010 under the guidance of leading interior designer Les Harbottle. The restaurant overlooks a leafy avenue adjacent to the famed Dutch East India Company Gardens. Thanks to its location on the hotel‘s first floor and its large glass windows, the experience emulates that of being in a tree house. The 100-seater restaurant has a contemporary look and feel with some striking red accent pieces, a few ladder-back chairs, origami-inspired lampshades and an eye-catching installation at the restaurant‘s entrance. The Mother's Day lunch menu costs R165 per person and bookings are essential. Please email trees@townhouse.co.za or call 021 465 7050. Sunday, 13th May. Waterkloof Restaurant will be dishing up on Mother’s Day – Chef Grégory Czarnecki has designed a special 4-course Mother‘s Day feast that even the most discerning mother will approve of, with each of the dishes paired with a matching estate wine. This fabulous foursome starts with Soft Boiled Farm Egg with porcini mushroom and sauce poulette served with the estate‘s Circumstance Chardonnay 2008. Mom and her entourage will then be treated to his signature Monkfish served with crispy prawn, ginger beer compressed apple and curry, matched with the Circumstance Viognier 2010. Next on the sumptuous bill of fare is Karan Beef, served with shallot tarte tatin, tomatillo chutney and Waterkloof‘s elegant Circle of Life Red 2009. To crown it all, Grégory will serve an exclusive Autumn Extravagance of ground berries, Tellicherry pepper panna cotta and smoked pear sorbet for dessert. Friday, 8th June, from 18h00 to 21h00 – one night only! Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show Public Tasting at the Sandton Sun (Maroela Room), cnr Alice Lane and 5th Street, Sandton, Gauteng. Now in its 11th year, the competition is widely regarded as the country's most rigorous wine selection process. The single night tastings present around 100 wines which achieved Trophy, Gold and Silver medals at the judging in May, when close to 1 000 wines were assessed blind by a panel of highly regarded international and local palates. As before, Trophy Wine Show patrons can expect to sample the very best wines entered into the 40 different categories. The judging panel has been chaired by leading wine authority Michael Fridjhon since the inception of the show in 2002. The 2012 panel comprised three international judges of high standing and six local judges covering a broad range of expertise. The international judges were: Brian Croser (Winemaker and industry icon, Australia); Anthony Rose (UK and Asian wine columnist) and Tom Cannavan (Scottish wine blogger – see www.wine-pages.com and UK wine broadcaster). The South African judges were Ginette de Fleuriot CWM (Marketing Manager, Vinimark), Gary Jordan (proprietor-winemaker, Jordan Wines), Christian Eedes (wine writer and blogger – see www.whatidranklastnight.co.za), Angela Lloyd (wine judge and writer), James Pietersen (head sommelier of Belthazar and Balducci restaurants) and François Rautenbach (Head, Premier Wine Programme, Singita Lodges). The participation of a team of associate judges, drawn from the pool of rising South African winemaking and judging talent, is included in a supportive capacity. Since these tastings include an array of the top achievers in both regular and lesser-known grape varieties, they serve to showcase the best of South African wines. Both events are held shortly after the announcement of results and while there are still stocks of the top wines for collectors seeking to add the best of current release Cape wines to their cellars. The list of wines and producers in attendance at the public tastings are kept under wraps until 30 May when the Most Successful Producer and the full results of the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2012 will be announced on www.trophywineshow.co.za. For the five-course dinner, a single room is R950, while a double room is R800 per person sharing. For the four-course paired dinner, a single room is R900 and a double room is R750 per person sharing. ART EXHIBITION: Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of Herman Wald, SA Jewish Museum, 88 Hatfield Street Gardens Cape Town. Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 2pm. Sculptures, Sketches, Writings and Audio Visual Displays. A major South African artist, Herman Wald is currently having his biggest exhibition in Cape Town, forty two years after his death and the digital-age retrospective breaks new grounds in the Arts market, offering online global access to the entire collection and its catalogue. The Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of Herman Wald is on exhibit at the South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town until 15 July 2012. On show are almost 60 sculptures, more than 40 sketches, writings and audio visual displays. Gallery hours are Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm and Fridays 10am to 2pm. Sculptor Herman Wald would have approved of the bold initiative, said his son Louis Wald who was only twelve years old when his father died, leaving a legacy of over 650 castings of his works but little money to sustain his family in Johannesburg. Hungarian-born, Herman Wald the son of a Rabbi, challenged the Orthodox Jewish restriction against carved images of the human form. After studying, doing apprenticeships and working in Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London he moved to South Africa in 1937 to escape the persecutions of the Nazi era and established his studio in Johannesburg. The death of his mother and her family in a concentration camp during the Second World War motivated him to produce a series of public works which confirmed his standing in the Arts world. The first, entitled Symbol for Chaos and Hope, and known as Kria, is the rendering of garments and a symbol of Jewish mourning, originating from biblical days and still practiced today. Admission Fees to the Museum and exhibition are: Adults R 40, South African Pensioners and students R25, Children under 16 years of age free. Valid Identification Required. The Museum caters for group tours by prior arrangement. Tapas Sundays at Holden Manz in Franschhoek.
