It is nonverbal behavior related to movements of any part of the
body or the body as the whole.
Different types of body languages:
Postures.

Facial expressions.
Eye contact.

Posture and how we carry your self tells a lot about you.
How you sit ,stand ,walk and hold your head not only indicates your
current mood, but also your personality in general.
For example: if you cross your arms while standing, you indicate that you
may be closed off and defensive.

Gesture are physical movement of hands, arms, legs,head etc..,
Examples of gestures are:

The face tells a lot about feelings .
when you speak, more than any other part of the body, your face will
communicate most clearly your attitudes, feelings and emotions.
Few such emotions can be conveyed through facial expressions are
happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise etc..,

The way you look at someone can
communicate many things, including
interest, affection, hostility, or
attraction.
Eye contact is also important in
maintaining the flow of conversation
and for gauging the other person’s
interest and response.

Space language means study of communication by “SPACE”.
In simple words, the way we communicate in particular environment
around us.
The amount of space we need: to intimate-till 18 inches ,for personal-18
inches to 4 feet, for social- 4 to 12feet, for public-12 or beyond.

Chronemics is the study of the role of time in communication and how
we use time to communicate.
For example:
Being on time for appointment for work convey favorable nonverbal
message.
Lateness convey unfavorable nonverbal message.
Continuous slowness convey a sign that a person avoid something.

Para language is vocal but nonverbal
dimension of speech. It has to do with the
manner in which you say something rather
than what you say.
This include-
1. Rate : speed at which you speak.
2. Volume: Loudness or quietness of vocal
speech.
3. Pitch: The highness or lowness of vocal tone.

Pay attention to inconsistencies: Non
verbal communication should
strengthen what is being said , i.e., the
person may say one thing but the body
is conveying something else.
Eye Contact: Is the person
maintaining good eye contact- If so, is
it overly intense or just right?
Watch for hand movements i.e.,
observe different types of hand
signals.

Your words should match your non-verbal behaviors, for Ex: Someone might
tell you that they are happy, while frowning and staring at the ground.
When your words do not match up with your actions, people tend to ignore what
you actually say and rather focus on your expressions of moods ,thoughts and
emotions.
23. USE GOOD EYE-CONTACT
Eye contact is one of the essential
non-verbal skills.
When people fail to look into other’s
eyes, it seems that they are not
confident or trying to hide
something.
Also, a good Eye contact doesn’t
mean to continuously stare at people.
Ex: Eye Contact is considered to be
one of the important aspects during
Interviews.

communication and shows respect.

Quite informal way of

-A handshake, a smile and
‘Hello!!’.
IN CHINA
Chinese don’t like being
touched by strangers.
Therefore, they don’t make
any body contact.
