What is nonverbal communication??
Nonverbal communication means Communication without words...
Yes it is possible.
Half of our messages are carried out through
Nonverbal elements such as
Appearance
Body language
Tone and
Pace of our voice
Language is not only the source of communication, there are
other means also through which messages can be communicated
Nonverbal communication is an elaborate secret that is written
nowhere, known by none and understood by all.
-Edward Sapir
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VERBAL AND
NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATI0N
Communication with the use of words and language , to convey messages to
other party.
Written Communication
NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION
The process of communicating without the use of words; through facial
expressions, body language, gestures, postures, etc.
Different types of Non-verbal communications are :-
1. Kinesics or Body language.
2. Space language.
3. Time language.
4. Para Language.
1.Kinesics or Body language.
It is nonverbal behavior related to movements of any part of the
body or the body as the whole.
Different types of body languages:
 Postures.
 Gesture.
 Facial expressions.
 Eye contact.
Postures-
 Posture and how we carry your self tells a lot about you.
 How you sit ,stand ,walk and hold your head not only indicates your
current mood, but also your personality in general.
 For example: if you cross your arms while standing, you indicate that you
may be closed off and defensive.
Gesture-
 Gesture are physical movement of hands, arms, legs, head etc..,
 Examples of gestures are:
Facial expressions-
 The face tells a lot about feelings .
 when you speak, more than any other part of the body, your face will
communicate most clearly your attitudes, feelings and emotions.
 Few such emotions can be conveyed through facial expressions are
happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise etc..,
Eye contact-
 The way you look at someone can
communicate many things, including
interest, affection, hostility, or
attraction.
 Eye contact is also important in
maintaining the flow of conversation
and for gauging the other person’s
interest and response.
2.Space language:
 Space language means study of communication by “SPACE”.
 In simple words, the way we communicate in particular environment
around us.
 The amount of space we need: to intimate-till 18 inches ,for personal-18
inches to 4 feet, for social- 4 to 12feet, for public-12 or beyond.
3.Chronemics or Time language:
 Chronemics is the study of the role of time in communication and how
we use time to communicate.
 For example:
Being on time for appointment for work convey favorable nonverbal
message.
Lateness convey unfavorable nonverbal message.
Continuous slowness convey a sign that a person avoid something.
4.Para Language:
 Para language is vocal but nonverbal
dimension of speech. It has to do with the
manner in which you say something rather
than what you say.
 This include-
1. Rate : speed at which you speak.
2. Volume: Loudness or quietness of vocal
speech.
3. Pitch: The highness or lowness of vocal tone.
How to read body language:
Pay attention to inconsistencies: Non
verbal communication should
strengthen what is being said , i.e., the
person may say one thing but the body
is conveying something else.
Eye Contact: Is the person
maintaining good eye contact- If so, is
it overly intense or just right?
Watch for hand movements i.e.,
observe different types of hand
signals.
 Posture and Gesture:
Is their body relaxed
or stiff and immobile?
Are their shoulders
tense and raised, or
relaxed?
 Examine the position
of the arms
To form a good relationship, one should have good communication
skills…!!
WAYS TO IMPROVE NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION:-
Look for Incongruent behaviors
Maintain good contact
Act intentionally in your
Communication
Be Energetic
Show Positivity
Mind your posture
LOOK FOR INCONGRUENT BEHAVIORS
 Your words should match your non-verbal behaviors, for Ex: Someone might
tell you that they are happy, while frowning and staring at the ground.
 When your words do not match up with your actions, people tend to ignore what
you actually say and rather focus on your expressions of moods ,thoughts and
emotions.
USE GOOD EYE-CONTACT
 Eye contact is one of the essential
non-verbal skills.
 When people fail to look into other’s
eyes, it seems that they are not
confident or trying to hide
something.
 Also, a good Eye contact doesn’t
mean to continuously stare at people.
 Ex: Eye Contact is considered to be
one of the important aspects during
Interviews.
ACT INTENTIONALLY
AND BE ENERGETIC
 Be mindful with your body language and
Facial Expressions.
 An upright posture appears
professional and gives an impression of
interest.
IMPORTANCE OF NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
 Non verbal communication plays and
important role in how people interact with
each other.
 People are using around 35% verbal
communication and 65% non-verbal
communication in daily life.
“The most important thing in communication is
to hear what isn’t being said.”
-Peter F.Drucker
NON –VERBAL COMMUNICATION IS
IMPORTANT IN THE FOLLOWING
ASPECTS:
 Used to complement the verbal message.
 Used to convey emotions like, happiness, joy,
sadness, hatred.
 Helps to overcome cultural barriers.
 Regulates the flow of communication.
 Strengthens the first impression.
 To express what the person actually mean.
Nonverbal communication around the
world…
 Human face is extremely expressive and able to convey countless
emotions without saying a word like…..
Eye contact Gesture Touch
IN INDIA
 Common style of Indians tend to be Polite
and indirect.
 Well known Greeting with “Namaste“ ,
placing both hands together with a slight
bow is very common non-verbal
communication and shows respect.
IN USA
 Quite informal way of
nonverbal communication as
-A handshake, a smile and
‘Hello!!’.
IN CHINA
 Chinese don’t like being
touched by strangers.
 Therefore, they don’t make
any body contact.
THANK YOU…!!!
