Community Colleges: The Right Choice!
If you are looking for enthusiastic and reliable
employees for your business, you may have to look no
further than your local community college. Many community
colleges provide training in skills that are applicable to a
variety of business situations. Students at these institutions
may be trained in such things as bookkeeping and basic
accounting, sales and marketing, and data management, or
they may have something more specialized, such as
paralegal training. Whatever the requirements of your
business, a well-trained recent community college graduate
will have the necessary skills to contribute to its successful
operation. Hiring locally trained staff is also a way of giving
back to your community.

an important factor in the
prevention of muscular fatigue;
discomfort or pain in the arms,
neck, hands or back; or eye
strain which can be associated
with constant or regular work at
a keyboard and visual display

IV. What are the roles of
management and workers?
Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from the text for each
answer. Write
If an employee receives a ……………….. , this means he will lose
his job if his work does not get better.
Workplace dismissals
Before the dismissal If an
employer wants to dismiss an
employee, there is a process
to be followed.
Firstly, you should be given an
improvement note. This will
explain the problem, outline
any necessary changes and
offer some assistance in
correcting the situation. Then,
if your employer does not
think your performance has
improved, you may be given
a written warning. The last
step is called a final written
warning which will inform you
that you will be dismissed
unless there are
improvements in
performance. If there is no
improvement, your employer
can begin the dismissal
procedure.
An employee is asked to leave work straight away because
he has done something really bad.
A Fair dismissal B Summary dismissal C Unfair dismissal
Dismissals
Of the various types of dismissal, a fair dismissal
is the best kind if an employer wants an employee
out of the workplace. A fair dismissal is legally and
contractually strong and it means all the necessary
procedures have been correctly followed. In cases
where an employee’s misconduct has been very
serious, however, an employer may not have to
follow all of these procedures. If the employer can
prove that the employee’s behavior was illegal,
dangerous or severely wrong, the employee can be
dismissed immediately: a procedure known as
summary dismissal.
Writing Task 1
Your local newspaper wants to reward people who
have contributed a lot to the community.
Write a letter to the newspaper. In your letter:
- suggest someone who deserves the reward
- mention what they have done to help the
community
- say what reward you would like to give this
person
Write about 150 words. You do not need to write
addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear…
Model Answer
Dear Sir / Madam ,
I read in last week’s edition of the White Horse News that you are
keen to reward local people who have made significant
contributions to the community . I would like to put my mother ,
Mrs . Gillian Summerton , forward for this reward .
My mother is a schoolteacher , and has done much to enrich the
lives of the young people in her care . In her free time , she
continues to give up her time to help people . She runs a ladies’
choir which is a superb opportunity for local women to get
together and enjoy themselves . Moreover , the choir performs
free of charge at charity events , and consequently my mother has
been fundamental in both raising large sums of money and
bringing pleasure to people .
I know that my mother does not need a financial reward for her
services to the community , as it gives her a lot of pleasure .
However , I’m sure that she would appreciate formal recognition
for her work , perhaps in the form of a donation to her preferred
charity , the Red Cross .
Thank you for your attention ,
The table below shows CO2 emissions for different forms of
transport in the European Union. The Pie Chart shows the
percentage of European Union funds being spent on different
forms of transport.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information
shown below.
Transport in the European Union
The chart shows CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer for various
methods of transport in the European Union while the pie chart shows
European Union spending on transport . Flying by air produces by far the
greatest CO2 emissions , approximately three times as much as passenger
cars which are the next largest producers!
Very little is spent by the EU on air travel while roads make up more than
half of the EU transport budget .
Trains produce about three times less CO2 emissions per passenger
kilometer than passenger cars and eight times less than air travel . Nearly a
third of EU transport funds are spent on railways .
Ships are a clean form of transport and produce about the same amount of
CO2 per passenger kilometer as trains do . However , only 2 percent of EU
funds are spent on ports . A further one percent is spent on inland
waterways .
Coaches are the cleanest form of transport . Emissions of CO2 per
passenger kilometer from coaches are half those of buses . Buses emit less
than half as much CO2 per passenger kilometer as cars . The European
union spends 10 percent of its transport budget on public transport , such
as buses and coaches .
Writing Task 2
Write about the following topic:
The increase in mobile phone use in recent years has
transformed the way we live, communicate and do
business. Mobile phones can also be the cause of social
or medical problems. What forms do these problems
take?
Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages
of mobile phones?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant
examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Benefits and disadvantages of mobile phones
Mobile phones have transformed the lives of nearly
everyone on the planet in the last few years . They have
made communication easy and cheap between friends ,
family and businesses . The phones are not only used for
speech and text messages but increasingly to browse the
internet , to read email , to play games or to pay for
products . In many countries , particularly those with slow
network connections , the internet is something that
happens on a mobile phone rather than on a computer .
There are also disadvantages to using mobile phones .
Keeping a powerful device transmitting waves and heat
next to your ear for long periods of time may be harmful to
heavy users of mobile phones . There are also social
problems related to mobile phone use . Walking around
with a phone glued to your ear may prevent you from
interacting with other people..
Significant those these drawbacks may be , the huge
convenience of the mobile phone will ensure that its use
continues to change our lives .

Which of the following is defined as the
number of children born per 1000 people per
year?
A. Replacement Level B. Fertility Rate
C. Birth Rate D. Fertility Level
Professor: Good morning everyone, now in today’s lesson
I’d like to talk about Population Growth, and in particular,
fertility rate. Now, can anyone here define fertility rate?
Charlene: Er, is it the number of births in a population,
measured per thousand people per year?
Professor: Oh, er no, that’s what we call the birth rate. The
number of children born in a year, per thousand
people. No, the fertility rate is the average number of
children born per woman in her lifetime, that is, if she lives
beyond her child-bearing years. Now, do you think the
British fertility level is higher or lower than it was ... say
twenty years ago?..........
Which TWO of the following things will the team do as a group?
A Write the report
B Do the presentation
C Write the questions
D Carry out the questionnaires
Kitty: Right, so shall we discuss what we have to do for this
project then?
Li: Yes, it says we have to ‘Investigate some aspect of the
university facilities’.
Paul: Yeah, we have to design a questionnaire don’t we?
Li: Yes. And we have to write an essay and do a presentation.
Kitty: Is it an essay? I thought it was a report.
Li: Let me check. Yes, you’re right, Kitty, it’s a report.
Paul: How long does it have to be? 1000 words, isn’t it?
Li: Let me see. The report has to be between 1000 and 1500
words, and we have to do that on our own, but we do the
presentation and the investigation as a group.
 All languages, even those of so-called 'primitive'
tribes have clever grammatical components. The
Cherokee pronoun system, for example, can
distinguish between 'you and I', 'several other
people and I' and 'you, another person and I'. In
English, all these meanings are summed up in the
one, crude pronoun 'we'. So the question which
has baffled many linguists is - who created
grammar?
Why does the writer include information about the Cherokee
language? Correct
A To show how simple, traditional cultures can have
complicated grammar structures
B To show how English grammar differs from Cherokee
grammar
C To prove that complex grammar structures were invented by
the Cherokees.
D To demonstrate how difficult it is to learn the Cherokee
language

There are 4 underlined sections in the text
below. Select the one which is wrong.
For decades the food industry has been
known serving up sugary or fat-laden
products, promoted
with ceaseless advertising.
After a muscle fiber has worked intensely
for while, it begins to lose potassium, and
that dampens the fiber's ability to contract.
Read the question. Take notes on the main
points of your response. Then, respond to
the question.
What do you think your life will look like
after retirement? Use reasons and details
to support your response.
Preparation time: 15 seconds
Response time: 45 seconds
Sample response
 I don't see myself as a person who will ever fully
retire. I like to keep busy, and I have trouble
relaxing. If I want to spend a few hours reading or
listening to music I usually schedule it into my date
book. I find that if I don't force myself to relax from
time to time I always find some sort of project or
work to do. Though I may not want to hold a paying
job in the medical field when I am older, I will
probably volunteer in a third world country rather
than retire. I'm lucky that I've found work that I am
interested in. If I grow tired of my job I may feel
differently when the time comes.
 Read an article from a campus newspaper. Take notes on the main
points of the reading passage.
Why isn't recycling mandatory on campus?
How does an Ivy League educational institute, such as U of C get away
with being so nonchalant about recycling? After a recent search across
campus, volunteers
….………………………………………………………………………………
…………………………
 listen to two students discuss the article.
M: Hey Lisa, you and your roommate have a recycling bin in your
dormitory room, don't you? I'm sure I've thrown a water bottle in a bin at
your place before.
W: Sure. Why do you ask Mark? Are you wondering where to go to pick
one up. I think they have them available in the housing office……………
 Why does the woman approve of the article? State her opinion and
explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
 Listen to a student asking a professor about
dropping a class.
S: Hi professor Jones. Thanks for agreeing to see
me on such short notice. I just realized that the
deadline for dropping classes is at the end of this
week.
P: I have to assume you are considering dropping
my class. I had a quick look at your last two quiz
…..
 In the conversation, the student has a problem.
Describe the problem. What options does the
professor suggest to help the student? Which
of the options do you prefer? Why?
 Reading lecture:
In a vote that took place at the International
Astronomical Union Conference on August 24th,
2006, Pluto lost its status as a planet in our solar
system. Pluto was originally discovered in 1930 when
scientists were ……………..
 listen to part of a lecture on the same subject.
As you all likely know by now, Pluto has been officially
demoted to a dwarf planet. What this means is that
we will no longer include it as part of our solar system.
The debate about …….
 Summarize the points made in the lecture,
explaining how they cast doubt on the points
made in the reading passage.
 Read the question below. You have 30
minutes to plan, write, and revise your
essay.
 Do you agree or disagree with the
following statement?
Always telling the truth is the most
important consideration in any
relationship.
 Use specific reasons and examples to
support your answer
I disagree with the statement above.
Although I admit that honesty should be one
of the most important consideration in …….
First, it is not good to tell someone his or
her faults or defects directly. By doing so, you
might ……….
Second, it is better not to tell someone
serious facts that can possibly discourage him
or her. I speak this from….
All in all, even though honesty is obviously
great virtue, “always telling the truth” is not the
key to………

  • 28. Model Answer Dear Sir / Madam , I read in last week’s edition of the White Horse News that you are keen to reward local people who have made significant contributions to the community . I would like to put my mother , Mrs . Gillian Summerton , forward for this reward . My mother is a schoolteacher , and has done much to enrich the lives of the young people in her care . In her free time , she continues to give up her time to help people . She runs a ladies’ choir which is a superb opportunity for local women to get together and enjoy themselves . Moreover , the choir performs free of charge at charity events , and consequently my mother has been fundamental in both raising large sums of money and bringing pleasure to people . I know that my mother does not need a financial reward for her services to the community , as it gives her a lot of pleasure . However , I’m sure that she would appreciate formal recognition for her work , perhaps in the form of a donation to her preferred charity , the Red Cross . Thank you for your attention ,
