Built an "i am in trouble" android app to "use one's social network" like facebook friends to help when we are in distress. Especially applicable in developing countries which lack the concept of 911.
We won the "Most innovative app" category.
2. Motivation
Lack of help in life-threatening situations from officials and strangers
Developing countries lack official emergency support (911)
Harvard Study: Lack of police response in developing countries
American Journal of Public Health: Minority communities less
likely to be helped by strangers
Existing Social network based supports
Only in major calamity - MARK SAFE
Idea: Engage social contacts for help in emergency
Mark me Safe
4. How will it work?
Engage Support in steps
Close friends (location)
Next set of friends
Chained network
Engage people in similar situations
who are unable to contact others.
Live surveillance
Using the camera of the phone like a surveillance
camera, and the app can record and live stream everything on its
own. Especially useful if one is in a life-threatening situation like
kidnapping, mugging.
Trigger is shaking the phone.
5. Future enhancements:
Voice recognition as a trigger instead of clicking an app. This will be more intuitive and
easier in life threatening scenarios.
Being able to send more information to various groups to ask for help.
