Activities

Pan-European Green ICT Survey
HePIS seeks to participate in Greek and European research and
development programmes or relevant programmes of other
countries or International Organizations through co-operation
with other natural persons or legal entities. The most recent
activity in this field is HePIS’ participation in the “Green ICT
Survey” undertaken by HePIS, CEPIS and 9 Computer Societies
that constitute the CEPIS Task Force. The survey aims to examine
the level of awareness regarding energy consumption & energy
efficiency of ICT equipment & policies within organisations across
Europe. The survey’s final results will be compiled into a report,
comprising a valuable European snapshot of how ICT managers
in different countries implement energy efficient methods in their
organisations.

Microsoft Unlimited Potential
HePIS participates in the EU initiative “e-inclusion: be part of
IT” which aims at reducing gaps in ICT usage and promoting
the use of ICT to overcome exclusion and improve economic
performance, employment opportunities, quality of life, social
participation and cohesion.
In Greece, the project is called Microsoft Unlimited Potential
and is managed by HEPIS. It focuses on providing technology
skills to underserved individuals and aims to bridge the digital
gap. It involves the creation and efficient operation of eight
(8) Unlimited Potential Centers (UPCs) at focal geographical
locations. Through this initiative, approximately 700 individuals
from vulnerable social groups, including migrants, long-term
unemployed, abused women and single parents, will be trained on
and certified according to the ECDL standard within a timeframe
of three years. The project was launched in July 2008 and has
been implemented by HEPIS, ECDL Hellas, Microsoft and the
local authorities.
The main objective of the project is to give an IT qualification to
the aforementioned groups of people and offer them the necessary
training on digital skills. Certifying their skills will give them the
advantage to demonstrate their IT competencies, and in doing
so increase their employment opportunities, thus improving their
quality of life.

Code of Best Practices for Women in ICT
HePIS has signed the European Code of Best Practices for Women
in ICT which reflects recent positive developments and seeks
to support and promote the greater participation of women in
the sector. Representing the European Centre for Women and
Technology in Greece, HePIS acknowledges that attracting more
women into ICT jobs will not just help to address an issue that
negatively impacts the overall economy, but also contributes to
realising equal opportunities, goals and women’s empowerment
by enhancing their capacity to participate fully in the information
society and shape its development.
15
The annual forum of ICT Professionals
The Hellenic Professionals Informatics Society (HePIS) organizes
the first Digital Trends forum to encourage dialogue on the
contribution of the ICT sector to the boost of the economy, the
growth of production, the formation of a creative culture, the
adoption of ‘Green’ and ‘Cloud’ practices and the strengthening
of the industry professionals’ overall role within the business
community.
The aim of the forum
The ICT sector is called to respond to two challenges: the
economic recession and the ongoing conflict between the ICT
and business units of an organization towards the efficient and
cost effective business operation. The aim of the Digital Trends
conference is to help the ICT sector to form a comprehensive
strategy, incorporating best practices in Green ICT and Cloud
Computing, in order to maximize business profits.
TheforumwillfocusonthebusinessdimensionofCloudComputing
and Green ICT, through offering ICT and business professionals
a useful guide to the introduction of an organization to the new
business environment. The Forum will combine international
speakers, national and international case studies and Greek best
practices, through interactive presentations of key suppliers.
Green ICT + Cloud Computing
16
The forum’s topics
The forum will focus on the following 3 topics:
• “Green” practices, business benefits and migration
plans
• The “business case” of Cloud Computing and its
corporate value
• How do Cloud Computing and Green ICT change the
way ICT departments operate?
The forum’s audience
The Digital Trends forum is targeted to professionals within both
the private and public sector and brings together all those involved
in the ICT industry in Greece, including suppliers, integrators and
consultants, as well as end users, such as CIOs, ICT Operations
Directors and Financial Directors, ensuring the evaluation of
Cloud Computing and Green ICT practice within all levels of the
decision-making process.
International and Greek speakers
Through a combination of global insights and national best
practices, the forum will bring together internationally acclaimed
speakers and Greek market leaders from the service industry in a
one day session of presentations and panel discussions.
