To Whom It May Concern
Marcel Haag
I worked with Marcel for Barrick (Australia Pacific) at the Lumwana Project in Zambia for the
period July 2012 to the end of October 2013. It is against Barrick policy to provide references
for former employees so the following are personal observations and cannot be attributed to
Barrick.
Marcel was recruited for the role of Core Shed Supervisor – Zambia. In this position he was
2IC and ‘back to back’ for the Core Shed Coordinator and led a team of 92 Zambian
Technicians as part of the world’s largest drilling campaign in 2012/13. He had shared
responsibility for the processing and storage of RC chips and diamond drill core (1,000m+ per
day). The project utilised 36 rigs from four drilling companies working double shift and
required transport of consumables and samples more than 40km between the drilling area
and the Core Shed. In this role Marcel’s responsibilities included:
Ensuring safe and efficient operation of the core shed (using JSA, FLRA etc)
Training Zambian Technicians in drill core mark-up, sample preparation, cutting,
transport and storage.
Collection of drill core technical data,
Drill core and sample QAQC,
Core and bag farm design, layout and execution.
In recognition of his leadership and commitment to Safety at the peak of the drilling
programme, Marcel received the Safety Champion Award.
As of 1 January 2013 Marcel was promoted to the position of Field and Logistics
Superintendent, two rankings higher than his previous role and recognition of his considerable
capabilities. In his new role Marcel maintained input to the ongoing drillout project while
adding many more responsibilities, specifically:
Contractor management (drilling project earth works in particular),
Logistics support for two camps with 150 and 400 beds respectively,
Field camp construction (40 person),
Equipment and consumables acquisition, stock control, development of Asset
Register,
Conversion of camp power supply from generators to mains power,
Sample transport and export for analysis
Overall responsibility for safe and effective operation and maintenance of a 50
vehicle fleet (4WDs, 5t and 8t trucks with HIABs, JCB and fork lifts). Administrator
for “inthinc” driver monitoring and mentoring system in all light vehicles and trucks.
Led safety and production meetings,
Reporting weekly and monthly or as required,
2. Creating and implementing a wide range of cost savings – estimated to be $450,000
in the first ten months of 2013
Marcel was nominated for a Lumwana Mine environmental award for the design and
execution of the sump for the relocated core shed.
In late 2013 the company ceased Exploration field operations in Zambia and significantly
downsized its workforce. Marcel was retained as long as possible but with no work available,
he was retrenched at the end of October 2013.
It has been a distinct pleasure to have worked with Marcel. In my opinion he is a committed
‘company man’ and has demonstrated natural leadership across all cultures. He has an
astounding level of personal drive but, in contrast to many others with this attitude, Marcel
will take his entire team with him on a journey of self improvement. I wish him all the best
and look forward to having the opportunity to work with him again.
