6. Informa(on Design
Informa3on design is concerned with transforming data into informa(on,
making the difficult easier to understand and to use.
It has come up as a response to people's need to understand and use such things
as forms, computer interfaces, technical informa3on, and physical space (airport)
It is a fast growing discipline which is based on graphic design, applied linguis3cs,
applied psychology, applied ergonomics (e.g. HCI), compu3ng, and other fields.
Informa3on designers think the selec(on, structuring and presenta(on of
the informa3on in rela3on to the purposes, skills, experience, preferences and
circumstances of the users.
To do this they need professional knowledge and skills in graphic communica3on
and typography, the psychology of reading and learning, human‐computer
interac(on, mul(media interface design, usability research and clear wri(ng,
plus an understanding of the prospec3ve and boundaries of different media.
