Sans Serif means "without serifs". These are typefaces that do
not have serifs, the tiny strokes that are often found at the ends
of the main strokes of letters. There are several main categories
of sans serif types: grotesques (e.g. Monotype Grotesque or
Akzidenz Grotesk), geometric sans serifs (e.g. Futura), humanist
sans serifs (e.g. Optima) and square sans serifs (e.g. Bank Gothic,
Agency and Microgramma). In the United States, Grotesques are
called gothics (e.g. Trade Gothic). Grotesques have letters that
are nearly uniform in width with strokes that appear to be the
same thickness. Well known grotesques are Helvetica, Arial,
Univers and Myriad. Geometric sans serifs have shapes that are
more geometric (i.e. circles instead of ovals and squares instead
of rectangles) than those of grotesques. They still have strokes of
consistent thickness. Besides Futura, other examples of
geometric sans serifs are ITC Avant-Garde Gothic and Gotham.
Humanist sans serifs have proportions based on those of
Renaissance serif types. Some have strokes of distinct thick/thin
contrast. Gill Sans and Syntax are typical of the first kind and
Optima of the second.
Serifs are small strokes at the end of the main strokes of
letters. They come in a variety of basic shapes: bracketed,
slab, hairline, wedge, and combinations of these. The first
roman typefaces in the late 15th century were seriffed.
Until the mid-20th century seriffed typefaces dominated
printing and design. Serif typefaces are generally preferred
for lengthy texts such as books, magazines and
newspapers.
Serif typefaces are divided into several subcategories in
which the particular type of serif is a defining feature.
Oldstyle typefaces—which reigned from the 1470s to the
mid-18th century—have bracketed serifs. Some classic
oldstyle typefaces include Centaur, Adobe Garamond,
Adobe Caslon, and Times Roman. Modern (or
neoclassical) typefaces, which first appeared in the 1780s,
are noted for their hairline or serifs. Some famous
examples are Linotype Didot and Bauer Bodoni. Slab serif
typefaces are often called Egyptians, but those with
geometric forms and unbracketed slab serifs are
sometimes called square serifs. Giza is an Egyptian while
Rockwell is a square serif. Wedge seriffed typefaces are
called Latins They are not as common as the other styles.

Typefaces with thick serifs are usually
called Slab Serifs. The earliest examples
were called Antiques or Egyptians in the
19th century and many still refer to them
as Egyptians. These typefaces can have
slab serifs that are bracketed or
unbracketed. They frequently have names
that reference Egypt such as Giza.
Typefaces with geometric proportions that
have unbracketed slab serifs are often
called Square Serifs. Examples are Stymie
and Memphis. Unbracketed slab serifs can
also be found on "humanist" typefaces
such as Serifa and PMN Caecilia.

Brush Scripts Fonts
Brush scripts are informal scripts. They are 20th century
inventions inspired by the work of sign writers and
commercial lettering artists. Most are based on pointed
brush lettering rather than broad brush lettering. Some
are not cursive and thus are more properly called brush
lettering (e.g. Dom Casual).
There are often clear distinctions between European
brush scripts and American ones, due to their different
lettering and handwriting traditions. Examples of the
former are Balzac and Sunetta; of the former, Brody and
Spring. More recent brush scripts, such as ITC Puamana
or Banshee, reflect the influence of modern calligraphic
practice. Some have ragged edges, implying the use of a
"dry brush".
Period (Antique or Retro) Fonts
The term Picture Fonts was first used by FontHaus. They are
also called icon fonts. They are the successors to the stock
cuts—images of horse-drawn carts, pigs, steamboats,
etc.—issued by 18th and 19th century typefounders and the
clip art sold by Letraset and its rivals in the 1960s and 1970s.
Picture fonts run a wide gamut from comic figures (such as
the perennial favorite, the little man with the big head) to sci-fi
creatures. Some picture fonts are iconic images such as flags,
Christmas trees, hearts, and stars. Some sample names of
fonts gives a good idea of the variety of designs available
within the picture font category: Underpants, Ampersand
Appliances, Critters, Insectile Set, Autobats (automobiles in
silhouette) and Fruit and Veggie Doodles. Picture fonts are
whimsical and they are serious; they are abstract and they are
realistic. There is something for every taste and every need.
Decorative, Graphic or Display Fonts
Typefaces intended for display, designed to grab attention
rather than be transparent as many text faces are, are not the
same as display versions of text typefaces. The latter are
visually optimized for use at large sizes but otherwise are not
extra fancy. Display faces include many in the Retro and
Script (Formal, Brush, Casual and Calligraphic) categories
along with typefaces that are decorative and those that are
"graphic". Decorative typefaces come in many flavors. The
most common are: inline (ITC Garamond Handtooled), outline
(Cheltenham Outline), shaded (Profil), dimensional (Buster),
patterned (Sinaloa), floriated (Gill Floriated), and historiated.
Stencil typefaces are often considered to be "decorative".
Graphic describes typefaces that are free in design and not
derived from pen or brush letters. Examples are Chwast
Buffalo, Caustic Biomorph and Neuland.
