1. CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.0 Introduction
Findings by Zembat, Koçyi, Tu, & Do (2010), school are organization that offer
education and instructional services. School is universally used as a medium of
education. Student start go to school from childhood until adolescent. The school
organization has different feature with other organization. Instructional methods and
activities must be considered from the student point of view and the direction of the
leader. Every school with high leadership qualities and management style is a key
factor for school effectiveness. (Machumu & Kaitila, 2014; Commonwealth Secretariat
,1996).
To achieve educational goals, one of the most widely used methods by
developing countries is accelerating the reforms and changes in the education system.
Education is not just to convey knowledge and skills but also to foster the future of the
people in the hope of furthering the development and modernization of the nation.
According to Mohamad and Jais (2016), Malaysia is aiming to become a centre of
excellence globally.
Teachers are an important group of professionals for the future (Silas
O.Falokun, 2016; Ingersoll, 2003). Teacher is who will responsible to convey
knowledge to student. Accordingly, the ability of teachers to control classroom and
manage student behaviour is emphasized to enhance the effectiveness of educational
outcomes. (Aliakbari & Darabi, 2013). Every school have a lot of teacher with
experience. Teachers need to have a skill to control the emotional and concerned
about his own feelings in order to produce a better job satisfaction. (Mohamad & Jais,
2016; George, 2000; Day & Carroll, 2004).
1.1 Background of the Study
Leadership style are cross-cutting issues and impact on teachers’ job
satisfaction. A study was conducted to determine leadership style that influence
teachers’ job satisfaction. Collaborating with leadership style is a dangerous emotional
2. response to teachers’ job satisfaction known as an activity where an individual cannot
complete the task assigned to them successfully. Every Manager in the management
and operation of their particular leadership style using the style of this is in fact a set
of patterns of behaviour that often occur during continuous work organization and
others who know him by it and as Manager for the Organization would be greatly in
collaboration with staff, leadership style Managers had a significant effect on the
morale of its employees. (Shafie, Baghersalimi, & Barghi, 2013)
Teachers' job satisfaction can be defined as the participation of teachers to
achieve school goals. Teacher’s job satisfaction is one of the most important variables
and has been studied over a long decade. Teachers' job satisfaction will influence the
decisionof the school organization. Teachers' job satisfaction also ensures that school
organization works well and consists of knowledge and skills that can guide teachers
to carry out various activities. High job satisfaction levels can improve cultural growth
and student success (Silas O.Falokun, 2016; Dale, 2012).
The successful of the school organization depends on social interaction and
relationships with teachers and leader has their own way of showing dissatisfaction
with something. Moreover Machumu & Kaitila (2014) say that ,school leadership style,
teacher job satisfaction is another important factor affecting school effectiveness.
Hence, leadership style would influence the teachers’ job satisfaction. By
produce best leadership will produce best teachers’ job satisfaction. Because teacher
is the main factor for growing a school, so that school organization must take serious
on teachers’ job satisfaction.
1.2 Statement of the Research Problem
The issues investigated in this study have been identified from these issues
relate to leadership style towards teacher job satisfaction. Discovery related research
with teacher satisfaction has been made. However, there is insufficient evidence of
the relationship between leadership style and teacher's job satisfaction to the needs
of school and the lack of need to be met.
Given the concerns and questions of leadership style and teacher job
satisfaction, there seems to be an urgent need to understand exactly what leadership
3. style affects teachers' job satisfaction. One of the key considerations, when the best
leadership style for teacher job satisfaction has been set up, how to meet the challenge
of educating leaders to change their behaviour to the most effective teacher job
satisfaction.
Study shows that leadership style are important elements in forming positive
teachers’ job satisfaction. However, teachers’ job satisfaction is the impact that can be
gained in teaching and learning process. As leadership style can affects students'
achievement, it is important that leader recognize the degree of influence they have in
forming a positive teachers’ job satisfaction.
Consequently, the purpose of this study focuses on the leadership style among
teachers’ job satisfaction. Finding must be collected to investigate leadership style that
influence teachers’ job satisfaction. Hence, by investigate the leadership style among
teachers’ job satisfaction, the school organization would use strategies that suit their
leader to be a best leader.
1.3 Research Objective
The research objectives of this study are:
1) To identify the leadership style among the leader in the ten school in Petaling
Perdana.
2) To evaluate the level of teachers’ job satisfaction in the ten school in Petaling
Perdana.
3) To determine leadership style influence teachers’ job satisfaction in the ten
school in Petaling Perdana.
1.4 Research Question
In this study, there are three research question which are:
1) What the leadership style among leader in the ten school in Petaling Perdana?
2) How does the level of teachers’ job satisfaction at the ten school in Petaling
Perdana?
3) How leadership style influence teachers’ job satisfaction in the ten school in
Petaling Perdana?
4. 1.5 Hypothesis
The hypothesis for this study are:
Ha1: There is a relationship between leadership styles and teachers’ job
satisfaction in ten school in Petaling Perdana.
1.6 Operation Definitions
The following term are defined and used in this study:
1.6.1 Leadership Style
The definition of leadership (nous) from the English Oxford Living Dictionary
(2017) is the action of leading a group of people or an organization by the state
or position of being a leader or the leaders of an organization, country, etc.
Leadership has been recognized as avital focus in the field of organization
behaviour in which it is one of the dynamic effects during individual and
organization interactions (Wahab, Rahmat, Yusof, & Mohamed, 2016).
Accordingly, Leadership style is “evidence by a specific leader in a combination
of task-oriented behaviour and people-oriented behaviour” (Smith, 1999;
Owens, 1981). This study has identified a variety of leadership styles based on
the number of followers. The most appropriate leadership style depends on the
function of the leader, the followers and the situation.
1.6.2 Job satisfaction
Based on Cambridge Dictionary Online (2017), job satisfaction is the feeling of
pleasure and achievement that you experience in your job when you know that
your work is worth doing, or the degree to which your work gives you this feeling.
According to Song & Mustafa (2015), job satisfaction is the degree to which
individuals feel positively or negatively about their jobs. The level of job
satisfaction can affect the work done. The higher the level of job satisfaction,
the better the work produced.
5. 1.7 Limitation of the Study
Limitations are conditions beyond the control of the researcher that may place
restrictions on the conclusions of the study and their applications to other situations
(Nyiha, 2015; Kahn,1998). The limitation for this study is the different leadership style
for each school. Every school have their own leader, and every leader have their own
leadership style. It is how we want to combine every ten school in Petaling Perdana
leadership style.
1.8 Significance of the Study
In a school organization, teachers are an asset to help the school to achieve
their objective, vision and mission. Therefore, it is important for the school organization
to make sure their teachers satisfaction in high level.
Thus, the aspect of leadership style is an important aspect that impact our
teacher job satisfaction. Studies on leadership style are important and necessary but
unfortunately there is still litter research progress in this area.
Research findings from this study can help in making school leader more aware
of their own leadership style and capabilities and help them develop their own
leadership style to support teachers to manage with the increased demand placed
above them there by enhancing the level of teacher job satisfaction. This study can
help other researchers in the country to identify countries that need further research
to fill the gap of information and to supplement existing knowledge groups.
