Making the Right Choice Maria Kohari
How Peer Pressure Affects Behavior • Peer pressure enables others to make decisions or control them • Push values, attitude and beliefs aside to be accepted • We are more likely to do something if everyone else is doing it • This is usually out of fear that we will not be accepted • Giving into peer pressure can have a physical, emotional and mental toll
How the Use of Alcohol Affects Me • I choose not drink alcohol, as a plan now and in the future • I found that most people turn to alcohol when they become stressed • I choose not to succumb to a position where I depend on it to feel better   • Choosing not to drink leaves me out of some social events, with no regrets! • Choosing not to consume alcohol gives me a healthier body with no effects!
Is Drug Use an Issue in my Community? • I feel as though every community has this issue to an extent • I believe drugs are more easily accessible up here • I find it is the most common with young adults • In general, I don't find it an issue • But drugs are present in the community
Preventing Peer Pressure • Avoid any situation where you'd find pressure • But be assertive and stand your ground when the situation occurs • Evaluate your relationship with those people • Confront the situation directly and look for a role model help exit • Focus on your goals as an individual rather than as a group

STI ~ What is it? • STI's are sexually transmitted infections • Though most these infections are spread sexually - •     It can also be spread through an open or infected area • It can spread through the mouth, anus and genitals • Most common causes are through unprotected sex or numerous partners
STI ~ Prevention • STI's are easier to prevent than to treat! • Best way is too avoid any sexual contact • If you choose to be sexually active, condoms are best •     - Though birth control and other medications will not defend STI's • Speak to a doctor if you are choosing or have been sexually active
STI ~ Treatment • Don't let embarrassment prevent you from seeking medical attention   • If you think you or your partner has an STI seek medical attention • It doesn't have to be your family doctor, just a local clinic   • Not all genital infections are spread through sexual intercourse   •     - if you're unsure about your sexual health, it's important to ask
Your Social Status and Drugs & Alcohol • You can be apart of a peer group without using drugs & alcohol • If your uncomfortable, avoid situations where you know it will be present • Evaluate your peers and their reactions to your decision of avoiding drugs • Your peers may neglect you for declining drugs or alcohol   • The only thing you have to risk is your relationship with your "peers"
Binge Drinking Among Teens • I believe binge drinking may be a problem among teens • Most teens drink heavily on weekends • Avoid particular events, people or situations that make you want to drink • Establish rules and boundaries and analyzing why you are drinking • Stay occupied to keep your mind off drinking
Raising Awareness About Drugs and Alcohol • There are no "safe" drugs • Create opportunities to interject your opinion of drugs and alcohol • Engage our generation by the use of social media • Listen and interject conversations regarding drugs or alcohol
Analyzing Teens use of Drugs and Alcohol • Most teens see drugs and alcohol as an experiment • They want to fit in, so they succumb to peer pressure • They think it's "cool", so they'll have a higher social status • It makes them feel better or feel older
Facts on Condoms • Latex condoms provide the best protection against STD's • Condoms have a shelf life! • Not only do comdoms protect against STD's but also unwanted pregnancies
Making Healthy Choices • Everyone is a at risk of spreading or getting an STI • Youth are at the highest risk • STI's don't discriminate against age or background • They are a serious health problem as much as they are embarrassing • If STI's are untreated they can lead to a serious health problems
