Let’s Talk: Digital vs. CD’s................6
Letter From The Editor
Picture this, A 10 year old sitting in her 16-year-old brother’s car listen-
ing to Slim Shady. At the time, I had only listened to Country music, thanks
to my parents, and to hear “Will the real Slim Shady please stand up!” was
different, but exciting. The beat. The tempo. The words. I fell in love. As I
grew up, I started listening to classic rock like KISS and Queen. However, I
was also listening to Avril Lavigne and Blink 182. Music was my getaway.
I would spend every last cent on CDs and listen to them on family vacations
and just around my room when I was bored. Music became my passion. I
tried playing the clarinet and needless to say after being last chair three
years in a row, I gave up. In middle school, I was in choir and loved the emo-
tion I got from singing my heart out.
That is why I started this magazine, because music is my life. Every as-
pect of music appeals to me and I am hoping through my magazine it will
appeal to you as well.

He’s The Man:
Meet Aloe
Blacc
“The purpose for mu-
sic is positive social
change.Even if the
music itself does not ex-
plicitly express anything
that may signify positive
change, the product of the
music will.” - Aloe Blacc
In case you didn’t know and you live under
a rock the past two years, Aloe Blacc is the artists
behind the Hit “The Man” and the voice behind
Avicii’s “Wake Me Up”. What many people don’t
know about Aloe is he has actually been around
the music scene for years.
While growing up in Laguna Hills Aloe, at a
young age, rented a trumpet and started teaching
himself how to play. He was exposed to the hip
hop world through LL Cool J, “I had a hip hop
moment and a musician moment.” This is when
Aloe
realized he wanted to be a musician.
In 1995, Aloe Blacc teamed with Emanon,
a hip hop producer, when they produced three
released album and one non-released album
containing break-beats and jazz samples. During
this time Aloe attended and graduated from the
University of Southern California.
It wasn’t until 2003, that Aloe launched his
solo career. During this time Aloe released two
EP’s and signed with Stone’s Throw Records. Aloe
released his first album Shine Through in 2006,
however by this time Aloe just wanted to focus on
song writing.
The reason was because Aloe thought of the hip
hop world as a big ego, that every rapper and rap
song was too much. He wanted to try to portray
himself through his songs to make sure his ego
didn’t shine through and then turned them into
hip hop. At this point Aloe took a break from
creating music and just focused on writing.
Aloe Blacc Today
Blacc is now signed with Interscope
Records, with his first EP released being “Wake
Me Up” which he partnered with Swedish DJ
Avicii to produce this EP. His songs has been used
in many commercials and theme songs for
television shows. His single “I Need a Dollar” is
used as the theme song for the HBO series How To
Make It in America and “The Man” is used as the
background music for the Beats by Dr. Dre com-
mercials. In his personal life Aloe Blacc is current-
ly married to Australian rapper Maya Jupiter and
they recently had their first child together.

Grabbin’ Grammy’s
The countdown is officially on for the big-
gest night in music. The Grammy Awards have seen
a lot of famous musicians play on their stages and
some of the most talented people have been a host.
The Grammy’s are coming up on their 57
years as the biggest award show for music. The
reason for this is because the awards does not
focus on one genre of music, rather multiple genre.
For instance, in 2006 Carrie Underwood won for
Best New Artist, not Best New Country Artist.
Granted, the awards do have their titles such as
Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Polka Album and
Best Classical Album.
Every year we younger generation watch
award ceremonies and have no idea how or why
the awards even got started.
History
The Grammy’s originally started back in
the 1950’s as a Hollywood Walk of Fame project.
Recording executives started compiling a list of
important recording industry people who might be
able to qualify for a Walk of Fame Star. What they
found was there were a lot of musicians that would
not be able to earn a star on Hollywood Boulevard.
Because of this, they created the award given to
their industry similar to the Emmys and Oscars.
The Trophy
After they created the award, they now had
to come up with a trophy to give to the winners.
Originally, the design of the trophy was a
gold-plated phonograph. However, in 1990 the
design got revamped, changing the soft lead for a
stronger alloy which will not damage as easily. This
has caused the trophies to be bigger and stronger.
The trophies are not engraved with the winners
name till after the award ceremonies, therefore,
every year they use the same trophies for the
winners to accept and hold while giving their
speech.
The Grammy’s is taking place on February 8,
2015.

7. We are now in what is called
“the digital age”. You can watch
television, play video games and even
communicate through video chat with
people all through your phone, tablet
or laptop. With us being in the
digital age where textbooks can now
be accessed online and songs just .99
cents away, the question that lingers is
which is
better digital or hard copy?
Growing up in the 90’s I still
remember cassette tapes and tape
players, my grandmother still owned
a record player and when we would
rearrange her living room we would
listen to Elvis on vinyl. Now, however,
there are so many ways I could listen
to music. I could buy a song or album
on iTunes, listen to Pandora or listen
to Spotify. Each of these ways are all
different from each other but they
have one common aspect: I don’t have
to physically go out and buy the album
for one song.
Having music digital is
definitely easier, but does that qualify
it as the best way to listen to music.
Everyone will have their different
opinions on the matter, some of the
older
generations prefer vinyl or “hard copy”
while most of the younger age might
prefer the
digital way. Me, I am torn between the
two ways. My friends and I still listen
to CDs on road trips when there is
nothing on the radio, however, when
I go to the gym I prefer to listen to my
music through my phone.
