Consumption
and Safety Measures
TYPES OF ENERGY
Energy can be broadly divided into two categories
● Renewable Energy
● Non-renewable Energy
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
RENEWABLE SOURCE NON-RENEWABLE SOURCE
• Definition : Renewable energy can be
generated continuously practically
without decay of source.
• Definition : Non-renewable can’t be
generated continuously without decay of
source.
• Responsible for 3-4% of carbon dioxide
in environment.
• Responsible for 91-94% of carbon
dioxide in environment.
• Not a reason behind “global warming”. • Main reason behind “global warming”.
● Solar
● Wind
● Geothermal
● Biomass
● Hydro
● Tidal
● Petroleum
products
(kerosene, petrol,
diesel)
● Coal
● Uranium
Electric Energy Consumption
is the form of energy consumption that uses electric
energy. Electric energy consumption is the actual energy demand made
on existing electricity supply.
Our daily /monthly consumption of electricity can be computed
from our meter reading. Our electric bill shows our monthly energy
consumption. The cost of this electrical energy is computed by
multiplying the electrical energy consumed (kWh) by the cost per kWh.
However, the present electric bill does not only reflect your monthly
energy consumption. It also shows other additional information such as
generation, transmission, distribution, system loss damages government
taxes and among others.
How much does electricity cost in the Philippines?
June 2022, Meralco announced an increase to P6.55 per kWh
from P6.22 kWh
Simple Computation
of Electrical Energy Consumed
Formula : E = Pt
Always remember, Power is expressed in kilowatts (kW), time (t) in hours
and work (kWh). This is the unit used to express the Electrical Energy E
consumption at home.
At home, the electrical energy consumed by an electrical appliance is
measured in kilowatt-hour.
Example:
A 50 W bulb is lighted 3 hours a day. The electrical energy
consumed by the bulb in a month is?
0.050 kW x 3 hours x 30 days = 4.5kWh
(1 day) (1 month)
ENERGY CONSERVATION
➔ Energy conservation refers to efforts made to reduce energy
consumption.
➔ Energy conservation can be achieved through increased
efficient energy use or reduced consumption from
nonrenewable energy sources.
➔ Energy conservation is often the most economical solution to
energy shortages.
WHY TO CONSERVE ?
➔ We have limited fuels available on earth.
➔ Our demand for energy is increasing day-by-day.
➔ It is possible that someday, most of fuels will be exhausted ,
and we will have to switch to alternate energy.
Electrical Safety Measures
➢ To identify potential electrical
hazards
● Cords
● Electrical Panels
● Trip Hazards
● Exposed Wiring
● Power Strips (chain of outlets)
➢ To know how to respond if in
case of electrical accident.
What to do. The first step to do is
to disconnect the power supply.
Turn off the electricals supply,
unplug the machine, or switch off
the fuse box, if within reach. Don't
attempt to touch the victim
until you're certain
the power supply
is turned off.
Electrical Safety Tips
DON'T plug a bunch of stuff
into one outlet or extension
cord.
It could damage the
electrical system in your
house or even cause a fire.
Electrical Safety Tips
Make sure all
electric cords are
tucked away, neat and tidy
Pets might chew on
electrical cords, and people
might trip and fall.
Electrical Safety Tips
DON'T ever climb the
fence around an
electrical substation.
If a ball or pet gets inside the
fence, ask a grown-up to call the
electric company – they'll come
and get it out for you.
Electrical Safety Tips
DON'T yank an electrical
cord from the wall.
Pulling on a cord can
damage the appliance, the
plug or the outlet.
Electrical Safety Tips
Fly your kite far away
from power lines or
substations.
The kite and the string
may conduct electricity-
sending it right through
you to the ground.
Electrical Safety Tips
DO look up and look out
for power lines before
you climb a tree.
The electricity can go
right through the tree
branch - and Right
through you!
Electrical Safety Tips
Have a grown-up put
safety caps on all unused
electrical outlets.
Covering outlets will
also help save energy by
stopping cold drafts.
Electrical Safety Tips
Keep electrical stuff far away
from water.
Most electrical accidents
around the house happen
when people use
electricity near water.
Electrical Safety Tips
Ask a grown-up or
an electrician for
help when you need
to use something
that uses electricity.
Electrical Hazard Protections
❖ Insulation
❖ Grounding
❖ Guarding Electrical protective devices
❖ Personal Protective Equipment Safe work practices
