- 2. STANDARDCERTIFICATERENEWALREQUIREMENTS
OVERVIEW:Alleducatorsshouldmodelthephilosophyoflife-longlearningandparticipateinprofessionaldevelopmentactivitiesthatfocusontheneedtocontinuallyupdateknowledgein
content,bestpractice,research,andtechnologythatisrelevanttotheindividual’sroleasaneducator.EachindividualwhoholdsaStandardCertificateisresponsibleforrenewingthe
certificate.TherulesadoptedbytheBoardforrenewingcertificatesarecodifiedatTitle19,PartVII,TexasAdministrativeCode,Chapter232,SubchapterA,andareavailablethroughthe
TexasEducationAgency(TEA)websitetea.texas.gov.
STANDARDCERTIFICATERENEWALCYCLE:Therenewalcyclewillbeeveryfiveyearsattheendoftheeducator’sbirthmonth.Forexample,aneducatorborninMarchissuedacertificatein
December1999wouldbesubjecttorenewalrequirementsonMarch31,2005.Educatorsholdinglifetimecertificatesareexemptfromtherenewalprocess.However,currenteducators
addingStandardCertificatesmustrenewthecertificate.
STANDARDCERTIFICATERENEWALREQUIREMENTS:Allcertifiededucatorsseekingtorenewacertificatemust:
Šcompletetheappropriatecontinuingprofessionaleducationclockhours;
Šcompletetheonlinestandardrenewalapplication;
Špaytheappropriaterenewalfee;
Šsuccessfullycompleteacriminalhistoryreview;and
Šnotbeindefaultonastudentloanorinarrearsofchildsupport
CONTINUINGPROFESSIONALEDUCATION(CPE)REQUIREMENTS:CPErequirementsforeachclassofcertificateareasfollows:
Šclassroomteachersmustcomplete150clockhourseveryfiveyears;
Šschoolcounselors,learningresourcespecialists/librarians,educationaldiagnosticians,readingspecialists,masterteachers,superintendents,principals,andassistantprincipalsmust
complete200clockhourseveryfiveyears;and
ŠdyslexiaCPEtrainingisrequiredforeducatorswhoteachstudentswithdyslexiaandmustincludenewresearchandpracticesineducatingstudentswithdyslexia
CONTINUINGPROFESSIONALEDUCATIONACTIVITIES:CPEclockhourscanbeaccruedthroughthefollowing:
Šworkshops,conferences,andin-serviceorstaffdevelopmentgivenbyanapprovedregisteredprovider;
Šundergraduateandgraduatecourseworkthroughanaccreditedinstitutionofhighereducation,withonesemestercreditbeingequivalentto15CPEclockhours;
Šinteractivedistancelearning,videoconferencing,oron-lineactivities;
Šindependentstudy,nottoexceed20%oftherequiredclockhours,whichmayinclude:self-studyofrelevantprofessionalmaterials(e.g.,books,journals,periodicals,videoand
audiotapes,computersoftware,interactivedistancelearning,videoconferencing,oronlineactivities);developingcurriculum;orauthoringapublishedwork;
Šdeveloping,teaching,orpresentingCPEactivities,nottoexceed10%oftherequiredclockhours;and
Šprovidingprofessionalguidanceasamentortoanothereducator,nottoexceed30%oftherequiredclockhours
CONTINUINGPROFESSIONALEDUCATIONPROVIDERS:AllpersonsororganizationsprovidingCPEactivitiestoeducatorsforStandardCertificaterenewalmustberegisteredwithTEA.
Providersmustfurnisheacheducatorwithwrittendocumentationtoinclude:
Šprovider'snameandIDnumber;
Šeducator'sname;
Šdateandcontentoftheactivitycompleted;and
Šnumberofclockhoursawarded
OnlythoseCPEactivitiesfromTEAregisteredproviderswillberecognizedforStandardCertificaterenewalpurposes.AllCPEprovidersapprovedbyTEAarelistedunderthe“Texas
Educators”,then“CertificationRenewals”linkontheTEAwebsite.
Aneducatormustcompleteatotalof150or200clockhoursofcontinuingprofessionaleducationeveryfiveyears.Aclassroomteacherwhoalsoholdsaprincipalcertificatewouldneeda
totalof200clockhourstorenewboththeteacherandprincipalcertificates.
PleasenotethateducationalaidesarenotrequiredatthistimetocompleteanyCPEhoursforcertificaterenewal.
WrittendocumentationandverificationofallCPEactivitiesforStandardCertificaterenewalmustbemaintainedbytheeducator.WorksheetstoassisteducatorsintrackingtheirCPEclock
hourscanbefoundontheTEAwebsite.ItistheresponsibilityoftheeducatortodeterminewhichCPEactivitiesmeettherequirementsforStandardCertificaterenewal.
