Eisenhower was informed that he would take over the command of the allied forces in London in WWII. His orders were clear: 1. Proceed to London 2. Invade Europe 3. Defeat the Germans CLEAR, ATTAINABLE, DECISIVE, & SPECIFIC!
 23. 23. Be Clear About Your Expectations!

Qualities of Coaches…

Be more like a shepherd than a general.

Create an environment of roving leadership.

Always says thank you to their team first by giving them all of the credit for success.

Know that team meetings do not count as coaching!

Constantly are looking for and evaluating talent!

 26. 26. Be Clear About Your Expectations My Expectations of Myself… “ I expect to experience joy whenever I create value for people that I love and care about.”
 27. 27. Before We Get to Step #3… A Quick Test
 28. 28. A Quick Test… (Please check only one statement) ___ Coaches should primarily help you to work on and improve on your weaknesses. ___ Coaches should primarily help you to work on and improve on your strengths. ___ Coaches should help you to maintain your strengths while improving on your weaknesses.
 29. 29. A Quick Test… (Which statement do you AGREE with the most?) ___ I believe that I can grow the most in my weakest areas. ___ I believe that I can grow the most in my strongest areas.
 30. 30. Step 3: RECRUIT THE BEST FROM TOP TO BOTTOM!

John Wooden, who won 11 college national basketball championships at UCLA, put it this way, “No matter how you determine total success in the coaching profession, it all comes down to one factor- Talent! Although not every coach can win with talent, no coach can win without it.”

 31. 31.

Finding talent is not an HR thing it is a TEAM THING!

TALENT and QUALIFICATIONS are two different things!

Recruit the Best from Top to Bottom! Two Basic Fundamentals We Need To Agree on For Today:
 32. 32. Recruit the Best from Top to Bottom! Confidence + Talent EQUALS PAUL POTS
 33. 33. Recruit the Best from Top to Bottom! How do I ‘mine’ for talent? Give me two or three great interview questions that will allow you to best mine for talent.
 34. 34. Recruit the Best from Top to Bottom!

17 Interview Questions That Help Find Talents

How closely do you think people should be supervised?

What do you think are the most enjoyable aspects of serving a customer?

What if anything what do you like about sales?

Tell me about a time when you really felt successful?

Tell me about a professional experience when you really felt uncomfortable in your role?

Where and/or with whom do you get your greatest personal satisfaction?

What job experiences have brought you the most intrinsic satisfaction?

How do you feel when someone doubts what you say? (Good sales question)

 35. 35. Recruit the Best from Top to Bottom!

17 Interview Questions That Find Talents

What have you enjoyed most about your previous jobs? What brought you here?

What do you think your strengths are?

What are your future career goals? Timelines, actual quantifiable results, etc.

How often would you like to meet with me to review your progress?

Will you tell me how you are feeling or will I need to ask?

Are there any important personal goals or activities that you might want to share with me?

What is the best praise you ever received? How did that make you feel?

Who have been your mentors and what did you learn from them?

Is there anything else you might want to talk about that will help us work better together?

 36. 36. Step 4: PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS!

I often see business leaders who establish their strategic plans based on the tactics to beat the competition. Real coaches understand that the entire game plan should revolve around talents which they possess as a team. Talent combined with real coaching wins games, PERIOD!

 37. 37. PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS!

Talents and Time

List your direct reports based on talents from top to bottom on the left side of the page.

List your direct reports based on time spent with the same list as above from most time to least time.

Draw a line to each employee. How many lines cross?

 38. 38. PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS! What are my talents that best position me for success? Maximizer : I focus on strengths as a way to stimulate personal growth and group excellence. I seek to transform something strong into something superb. Arranger : I organize but am flexible. I try to figure out how all of the people and resources can be best used for team success. 42. 42. Are we business managers or are we ‘real’ coaches? Managers/Directors: Look Inward. (day to day tasks) CEO’s: Look Outward. (the vision thing) Real Coaches: Do Both!
 43. 43. Looking Inward & Outward (1 st thing that pops into your mind in one sentence only!)

Looking Inward: Me

How can I improve as a team member today?

How can I be more productive today?

How can I generate better results today?

Looking Outward: We

How can we improve as a team members everyday?

How can we be more productive everyday?

How can we generate better results everyday?

 45. 45. There are no magic formulas!
 46. 46. Turning it Around During Challenging Times… Matt Stevens Matt, a senior, had been on the St. Laurence CYO team for a year. Matt shoots free throws every practice, though, making about half. Before a charity tourney this past February, His brother, Joe asked the other teams if Matt could shoot all of St. Laurence's free throws. Amazingly, they agreed. So did the refs. A blind kid was going to be his team's designated shooter. Hey, it's still better than Shaq.
