The Core Competencies of Conscious Leadership
Each competency listed on the following pages has a definition and you have the opportunity to determine your own related behaviour.
Behaviours are classified as either those that should always be present and visible in any leadership interaction, or those that are called for in
certain leadership situations and, therefore, not always visible, but equally important.

A. Foundation
In order to lead effectively, it is essential to ensure that you build a strong foundation from
which you and your team can operate. The more solid your leadership foundation is from the
start, the better leader you will become with each additional layer added.
A large part of the solid foundation rests in how strong you are as a leader and to what extent
you are dependable, clear and congruent in your speaking and actions.
With this in mind, a Conscious Leader consistently incorporates the following four elements
into his / her leadership style:
1. Integrity - Doing what you say you will do, by when you say that you will do it.
“The foundation of Trust, self-confidence and commitment of others to follow
you, is laid in you being your word. Every action or in-action, informed by
your integrity (or lack thereof), determines how they will choose to engage
with you and their work. It will inevitably inform their relationship and
context for you and the company”.
This is also the critical birth-place of two most important business principles:
(1) Business Performance
(2) Accountability
2. Incorruptibility- Ability to stand unwaveringly behind a decision, choice, a vision and
planned direction.
“Incorruptibility is what makes your ‘Yes’ a yes, and your ‘No’ a no. It is
the vital ingredient needed to ensure dependability, and clarity for all.

It is the key to transparency and ensuring that everybody, including you,
know where you stand at all times. Being able to choose your True North
and stay committed to that, to its essence and its Value is a gift a Leader
can give himself and his team.”
Of course, it is not to be confused with ego-driven narrow-vision.
Incorruptibility in ‘being right because I say so and am the boss’ is going to
muddy the waters, reduce transparency and build resistance.”
3. Courageousness - The characteristic of being able to choose to get out of your
comfort zone, act independently of your thoughts and feelings for a greater good and in
order to achieve results.
“Courage is not the absence of fear: it is the choice to act in spite of that
fear. It is the knowing that the risks are high, the consequences significant
and, above these, acting.
It is this action, informed by your heart, passion and vulnerability that sets
courage apart from bravery and that inspires others to risk themselves
too.”
4. Accountability - I am responsible, in Totality (at all times, in all places, under all
circumstances and without exception).
“A great leader is unequivocally clear, that he is accountable: always and
in all ways.
To choose to see our accountability is not about taking the glory in
achievement, but in the ensuring that success is reached – even in the
depths of breakdown. It is an act of courage and of course an act of
leadership. Accountability seeks to create the circumstances for
greatness, even when circumstances do not support greatness. It is about
surrender and commitment to responsibility – at all times.

“With Responsibility comes great Power”
It is most certainly not convenient to adopt this position; however it is the
most Powerful, and the most Liberating”.
B. People Invested
A true leader gets fully, that it is never about him. Leadership is about LEADING others. He gets
that the role of leadership is about service to others and playing the supporting function to them;
to empower them to be their best. The greatest leaders have inevitably been able to put aside
their own egos in order to accommodate others. This is the act of being invested in others, their
greatness and their potential.
With this in mind, a Conscious Leader consistently incorporates the following four elements
into his / her leadership style:
5. Compassion - Getting where another is at, whilst still expecting the best of them.
“In order to lead people, we need to constantly be invested in their
potential, their capabilities and never let them off the hook in stepping into
it. However a sign of Conscious leadership is getting where they are at, at
the same time. This is a display of standing for their Greatness, with an
open heart; no judgement or making them wrong.”
6. Commitment to Others – Letting go of my agenda and pre-conceptions and being
committed to the people that I lead.
“The degree a leader makes it about other people is a true sign of what
wood he / she is made of.
The Core Competencies of Conscious Leadership© All Rights Reserved

The power of a leader is recognised in how much she / he is prepared to
set aside own ambitions / success / agenda, and embrace others; their
needs / desires / visions and empower them to live into these.
This is the essence of humility.
This is the area that we nurture trust, loyalty and commitment in others.”
7. Communication – Clear, direct, untainted communication to create understanding,
action, and connection.
“To achieve extraordinary success in leadership, you not only need a clear vision
regarding your goals and objectives, but you also know how to communicate these to
your team. In order to achieve your success at the highest levels, you must learn the art
of communication, because when your team knows about your goals, it becomes easier
for them to participate.
Communication is a great motivator. Communication through Getting and Listening is the
cornerstone of Conscious Leadership.
It demands direct, untainted interaction in order to achieve clarity and cohesion.
Communication that is active (as opposed to passive) free from story and used to move
forward into action is one of the most important tools of leadership. It catalyses
understanding, action, and triggers trust.”
8. Openness - having the space, and the willingness to allow another. No resistance of
another person, their ideas, beliefs, values, vision and fears. Openness is the degree
to which you are willing to consider new ideas and opportunities.
“Openness relates to being able to receive. It is about allowing another, whether we
agree or not. An open leader is receptive to ideas that are outside her / his current mental
models, being able to suspend judgement until after one has heard the other person.
The Core Competencies of Conscious Leadership© All Rights Reserved

An open leader receives his / her people without trying to shut them down, this
demonstrates care and builds trust.
Openness also treats other ideas as potentially better than one's own ideas – indeed, it is
embracing of new, uncharted territory, being able to openly consider alternatives to our
well tested knowledge and experience. It is a powerful facilitator for evolution and
growth.”
C. Self-Leadership
Credibility in leadership is built and sustained through the displayed behaviours of a leader.
A Conscious Leader is constantly seeking to grow, evolve and develop in order to BE and DO
better.
Leadership of the Self is a further sign of humility. It indicates that we accept that as leaders, we
have areas to develop and room for improvement.
Critically, a leader engaged in Self-leadership is living proof of leadership. Who are we as
leaders, to expect others to follow us, grow, develop themselves, get out of their own comfort
zones and surrender to their Greatness, if we do not choose to do those ourselves? A Conscious
Leader is able to step into the competency of seeking his / her own areas for development and
surrender, and then creating circumstances for that evolution to take place.
With this in mind, a Conscious Leader consistently incorporates the following four elements
into his / her leadership style:

9. The Power to Act – The competency to Act independently of all Thinking and
Feeling.
“Thinking and feeling are movements that happen to a human being, and the human
being has no control over these streams. However a human being also has the power
to act independently of these streams of thinking and feeling.
A Conscious Leader not only displays this competency, consistently, but also
empowers his people to do this too. This is the realm of taking control of circumstances
that are outside of our control. This is the perspective of living: I AM my Word, no
matter what!”
10. Honesty – Being truthful about your thoughts and feelings.
“Leadership is essentially based on trust. Everyone wants their leaders to be
trustworthy, and most people choose to follow leaders that they trust – this is supported
and cultivated through leaders displaying honesty.
Honesty is a virtue, a signature trait of our higher selves.
Honesty breeds respect, openness, a culture of transparency and clarity of
communication.
11. Authenticity – Being original, real and true to your higher Self.
“Phonies. Have you ever worked for one? They say one thing and do another. They tell
people what they want to hear. Their views morph with popular opinion. They’re the ones
you can’t pin down, and they avoid taking a stand on just about anything. - Susan
Tardanico (Forbes Magazine).

Authenticity is the most difficult and indispensable quality of Conscious Leadership.
Authenticity is you Being your Light; not clouded by ego, identity, looking good, not wanting
to look bad, playing small or playing big. No pretence, preconception, posturing or grand-
standing.
A Conscious Leader is constantly seeking to become detached from his / her ego. So that
he / she owns the ego and not the ego owning him / her.
It is a vulnerable and risky space that turns the weakness of being slave to our Identity, into
the magnificent strength of us, when we are pure and unadulterated.”
12. Present – right here, right now, in Totality.
“As you engage with this material, what are you thinking? Are you really concentrating,
focussed here, or is your mind drifting away toward something else or what you have to
do next? PAY ATTENTION!
When we are in the movie in our heads; caught up in our thinking, feeling,
interpretations, expectations, assumptions, definitions, ideologies, beliefs, values,
STORY, we are not present. We are not here: we are THERE.
This dilutes our ability to respond to circumstances, stay Conscious and in the Isness of
this moment. This leaves us with regrets later, that we missed this opportunity.
It takes away from our power to create connection, rapport, results and debilitates us
with inertia.
As a Conscious Leader, the greatest gift we can give ourselves and others around us, is
to be fully present in this moment, in totality, giving and receiving all that is available in
this moment, and then move on to the next.”

D. Creative Consciousness
A Conscious Leader that is connected to Consciousness is a leader that lives in the power to
supersede circumstance; create from possibility and stay connected to something that is more
than just him / herself.
Maslow referred to the highest level of human motivation happens at “Self Actualisation”. This is
the place where the basic needs of survival are surpassed and instead a person's energies are
committed to something that is much bigger and important – Being his / her higher Self.
The final level in the Core Competencies of Conscious Leadership is built around a Leader
stepping into a reality that is not tied to personality and detail. It is a level of expansion and depth
that includes, allows for and empowers all others and in doing this, does the same for the
Conscious Leader.
13. Connected to Vision – a constant, unwavering connection and commitment to Vision.
A vision of Being more than we currently are.
“By definition, a leader takes others forward. In order to achieve this, a leader needs to
have his / her eyes firmly on the horizon with an absolute clarity not only on where to
go, but also what the benefits lie in going there.
Being connected to Vision is a place of being boundless and unlimited; not restrained
by circumstance, detail and perceived limitations.
A Conscious Leader is able to communicate this to his / her people in a way that keeps
them inspired, moved into action and connected to the Vision too.
14. Holistic Thinking – "I am what I am because of who we all are.
“Holistic Thinking is a way of thinking and of Being that translates in to being connected to
Consciousness – constantly striving to respond to the world through the 3rd
Operating
System.
The Core Competencies of Conscious Leadership© All Rights Reserved

Holistic Thinking is a consideration of everything from all possible angles of impact and
consequence.
Holistic Thinking is a consideration of everything through a surrendering of my Identity
and Ego, and what I think, I feel, I want or I need. It is the embracing of others first and
always.
Popularly referred to as The Third Line or Triple Bottom Line Reporting in business;
Holistic Thinking is about creating value on all levels, not only through financial profit.”
15. Coaching – powerful, empowering communication through questions and looking.
“Answers don’t empower – questions do. A Conscious Leader that seeks to empower
his / her people is committed to support them in exploring their own possibilities and
answers; rather than dictating, telling or advising.
Using coaching as a means of communication empowers individuals to discover their
own abilities and competencies to achieve results or goals. This facilitates the team
member to discover answers and new ways of being, based on their values,
preferences and unique perspectives.
The beauty of this approach is that it offers a sustainable platform from which
expansion and results are created.”

Authenticity is you Being your Light; not clouded by ego, identity, looking good, not wanting to look bad, playing small or playing big. No pretence, preconception, posturing or grand- standing. A Conscious Leader is constantly seeking to become detached from his / her ego. So that he / she owns the ego and not the ego owning him / her. It is a vulnerable and risky space that turns the weakness of being slave to our Identity, into the magnificent strength of us, when we are pure and unadulterated.” 12. Present – right here, right now, in Totality. “As you engage with this material, what are you thinking? Are you really concentrating, focussed here, or is your mind drifting away toward something else or what you have to do next? PAY ATTENTION! When we are in the movie in our heads; caught up in our thinking, feeling, interpretations, expectations, assumptions, definitions, ideologies, beliefs, values, STORY, we are not present. We are not here: we are THERE. This dilutes our ability to respond to circumstances, stay Conscious and in the Isness of this moment. This leaves us with regrets later, that we missed this opportunity. It takes away from our power to create connection, rapport, results and debilitates us with inertia. As a Conscious Leader, the greatest gift we can give ourselves and others around us, is to be fully present in this moment, in totality, giving and receiving all that is available in this moment, and then move on to the next.”
