For students conducting research, the traditional linear navigation model of search form to results to detailed record has served as a consistent, gold standard. Today’s students are abandoning traditional paths, embracing a new behavior Jakob Nielsen’s team calls “page parking” and moving full-steam ahead with heightened expectations for the search results page. On this new results page experience – what was once a pass-through en route to detailed information about a product or service – has become the singular page that matters most: the required basic; the new black. Attendees will also learn the difference between what students call a “good” search result and how this compares to what librarians’ favor. Join EBSCO’s Sr. UX Researcher, Lin Lin, to learn more about students’ digital ecosystems and gain a deeper understanding of user needs at that critical juncture.

Science is a global enterprise, and over two million scientific papers are written every year in collaborations that span the globe. What are the best tools and technologies that support this growing need for global collaboration? How can libraries and publishers harness these tools to help their users in these efforts? This session will explore new technologies to facilitate global, interdisciplinary collaboration and how some publishers and libraries are taking advantage of these tools.

presented at the Geneva Workshop on Innovations in Scholarly Communication (OAI9), Geneva, June 18, 2015 Science is in transition. If all goes well, the transition is towards more open, efficient and honest/reproducible practices. Libraries should move with this change by supporting open science instead of just open access. Building on their successful project "101 innovations in scholarly communication" Jeroen Bosman and Bianca Kramer present their interpretations of what is going on and can be expected in the six phases of the research cycle. They have tested their hypothetical workflows and show how real, day-to-day research workflows are changing from traditional to modern, innovative and experimental. These changes are reflected in tools and sites people use in various phases of that workflow. They might for example change from Web of Science → SPSS → Word+Endnote → Nature → ResearcherID → Impact Factors to Sparrho → ROpenScience+IPythonNotebooks → WriteLateX+Docear → The Winnower → Kudos → Publons+PubPeer. The way new generations of researchers work affects how information will be discovered, re-used, created, shared, communicated and assessed. There are huge opportunities for libraries and other stakeholders to contribute and work with the research community, but only if they are well prepared!

As a means of making available and acquiring e-books, Stockholm University Library uses PDA and EBS models. In order to improve the knowledge of the benefits and drawbacks of these purchasing models, the library has undertaken a major evaluation of ten agreements with various publishers and aggregators. This session will, among other things, address the following questions: What is the average price per book at the time of purchase? What is the cost per use? Do purchased titles continue to be used? What is the usage by subject area and by year of publication?

Librarians are increasingly being asked to engage with bibliometrics to help with institutional decision making. However, few have professional qualifications in this area and there is an onus on universities to do metrics responsibly. A small project supported by the Lis-Bibliometrics forum and Elsevier Research Intelligence Division is developing a set of bibliometric competency statements to ensure practitioners are equipped to do their work responsibly and well. This workshop will report on progress to date and invite input into the project.

Michael Levine-Clark, University of Denver, Jason Price, SCELC Library Consortium As transformative agreements emerge as a new standard, it is critical for libraries, consortia, publishers, and vendors to have consistent and comprehensive data – yet data around publication profiles, authorship, and readership has been shown to be highly variable in availability and accuracy. Building on prior research around frameworks for assessing the combined value of open publishing and comprehensive read access that these deals provide, we will address multi-dimensional perspectives to the challenges that the industry faces with the dissemination, collection, and analysis of data about authorship, readership, and value.

Makes the case that we should let metrics do the "heavy lifting" in the UK REF [Research Excellence Framework]. I show that a university-level ranking based on metrics (Microsoft Academic citations for all papers published with the university's affiliation between 2008-2013) correlates at 0.97 with the The REF power rating taken from Research Fortnight’s calculation. Using metrics to distribute research-related funding would free up a staggering amount of time and money and would allow us to come up with more creative and meaningful ways to build in a research quality component in the REF.

This presentation I first discusses PoP's history, its philosophy, as well as recent new features and data sources, before sharing some survey data on what people use Publish or Perish for and what their background is. The major part of the presentation focused on specific use cases for Publish or Perish. In the presentation you will learn how to track your citations in different data sources, how to make your case for tenure or promotion, how to clean your Google Scholar Profile, and how to export both bibliographic details and query results or metrics.
