3. What is social?
Social is all about “Sharing information” in a conversational manner
Social is connecting with and finding like minded people / communities
Social is a way to express opinions and thoughts
Social allows “Crowdsourcing” Information
Social interactions are free from a fixed and rigid structure
They represent the way their users naturally think
They allow many inter-connections and webs of information
They develop and adapt over time
Socially interesting content bubbles to the top
Small conversations
Trending terms
Social tends to be more honest
5. Why are social tools successful?
Quick and Easy - Path of least resistance
Even if that means going out of the firewall!
Why is email sharing still so popular when your users have SharePoint?
Why do your users still send a link from DropBox / Sky Drive?
Give them an equally easy way to share within the firewall
Match the way that users think / Unstructured
Social network / community membership
Familiar
6. Benefits to the business
Conversational information is no longer “locked away” in email inboxes
A Digital “record” of tacit information.
Other people benefit from reading previous conversations
New person joining a project can read the conversational history and understand
why things are the way they are.
Conversational openness allows others to get involved and add ideas that may
have otherwise been missed.
16. Things to think about
Governance
Controlled vs Uncontrolled tagging / metadata
Should we let people say anything?
Should we censor / moderate users comments?
Cross Device Support
Always connected – Smart Phones, Tablets,
Google Glass, Smart TVs
Bring Your Own Device (consumerisation)
Instant Alerts / Notifications
Where can we go?
Happiness index
Agile / fast moving business models
Cultural considerations / differences
Is the culture one of “sharing” or do out users
tend to not contribute?
What about different cultures within the same
organisation?
It can be easy to accidentally offend others,
how will you manage this?
End User Adoption
How will you “empower” and “encourage”
people to use the social tools?
Who will be “assigned” to kick start the social
interactions or answer the first wave of
questions until the crowd confident enough to
post their own answers / questions?
How will you keep up the momentum after the
initial excitement wears off?

21. UK - OFCOM Study
Tech habits of adults and children in the UK and the following facts hit home:
"UK adults spend an average of eight hours and 41 minutes a day on media devices,
compared with the average night's sleep of eight hours and 21 minutes"
"TV and radio remain popular despite the growth of digital media"
Of 12-25 year olds:
"Only 8% said they used email"
"Just 3% said they communicated using a landline phone"
