Urban Beekeeping
Over the past decade, we have witnessed
the decline of bee populations around the
world. This important issue has led many
to seek solutions to help repopulate this
important and vital segment of the
planet’s ecosystem.
Different countries have exploited resource innovations to face this
problem, with urban beekeeping being one of the easiest and most
productive. Though beekeeping is not new, its practice is becoming
more prevalent.
Such is the worldwide concern to repopulate and care for bees that some
cities such as Paris have already normalized the cultivation of honey in
various locations, including building rooftops.
At Grand Hyatt Santiago, we are proud to be the first capital-city hotel
in Latin America that supports and promotes urban beekeeping.
2. We have seen more and more people get involved and join this
movement, which is part of what motivates us to continue helping the
environment, as we become aware of the global importance of these and
other activities.
Last September, Grand Hyatt Santiago became part of an extraordinary
urban beekeeping project, an initiative of our Executive Chef Matias
Uhlig, in which beehives were installed on the roof of Anakena, our
classic Thai restaurant.
This project will responsibly manage our beehives within an urbanized
and densely populated area. Chef Matias organized the project in
cooperation with Katharina Wittmann, an international master of organic
agriculture and food systems who specializes in urban beekeeping here
in Chile.
Through this project, Grand Hyatt Santiago seeks to take advantage of
the urban resources of the city, especially the abundant flowering in the
area surrounding the hotel, which ensures the feeding bees produce
honey, wax and propolis. All of this reflects the hotel’s innovation,
sustainability and genuine care for the environment.
It is noteworthy that this honey is currently under development and will
eventually replace the honey we buy and serve to our guests.
We are happy to host this new project, which is unique in Santiago, and
we look forward to motivating the rest of the community to make the
effort and help the environment with this simple and easy system.
