Orthographical mistakes will be deducted from the total grade. I – Discover the Grammar A – Read these sentences. Indicate whether each gerund is used as a subject (S), an object (O), an object of a preposition (OP), or a subject or object complement (C). C        1.I was having difficulty finding a subject.  O       2.I remembered learning a rhyme. S        3.My perceiving friendship in this way was pretty simplistic. OP     4.I didn’t have a way of getting to the practices. C        5.My brother’s passion is kayaking. OP     6.We can go months or years without contacting each other. C       7. I was having trouble figuring out my career. O      8. Bill supported my becoming a writer. C       9. I would have a hard time living without my two “best” friends. B – Are the –ing words in each of the following sentences gerunds? Write Y (yes) or N (no). Y        1.I’ve long since stopped thinking of friendship in these terms. Y        2.These are the friends we make by engaging in some specific activity. N        3.He belongs to a kayaking club. Y        4.We enjoy just catching up on each other’s activities. Y        5.Cross-generational friendships are worth pursuing. N        6.He was my teacher in a writing class. Y         7.They have become good friends on their own through their common interest in collecting rare books. Y        8.I would have a hard time being single again. II – All Work and No Play Brian Hansen is constantly tired and dissatisfied. He has gone to a doctor to see if there is anything physically wrong with him. Complete the conversation with gerunds. Make the gerunds negative if necessary. Doctor: Well, Brian, what seems to be the problem? Brian:I’m tired all the time. Some nights when I come home from work I’m so exhausted I don’t feel like doing (do) anything but collapsing on the sofa and vegetating (vegetate) in front of the TV. Is there anything physically wrong with me? Doctor:No, I’ve looked at the test results, and you’re healthy. How long have you been feeling like this? Brian:Oh, two or three months, I guess. Long enough so that I’ve begun worrying (worry) about not having (have) any energy. Basically I’m not doing anything besides punching a time clock. Doctor:How much are you working? Brian:Well, I’m putting in a lot of overtime—all in all, at least 60 hours a week, I’d say. Doctor:Why are you doing this? Are you trying to kill yourself? Brian:Well, at this point, not working (work) overtime is out of the question. I’ve got a lot of bills to pay off. The other thing is that I only recently moved here, and I know hardly anyone, so my focus is on making (make) money for a while. I like socializing (socialize), and I really miss having (have) any close friends, but I don’t know quite how to go about meeting (meet) new people. Doctor:You’re not married, then? Brian:No, not yet. Doctor:Well, I think you need to stop working (work) so much and start playing (play) a little—to put things in balance. I’d say you need a hobby—and some friends. Brian:A hobby? You mean some boring thing like stamp collecting (collect)? Doctor:No. That’s an OK hobby if you like it, but there are more interesting ones. Brian:Like what? Doctor:Oh, maybe like karaoke. Do you like singing (sing)? Brian:I love music, but I don’t have much of a voice. In my case, not singing (sing) is better than singing (sing) off key. Doctor:Well, have you ever gone orienteering (orienteer)? Brian: What’s that? Doctor:People use a map and a compass and try to be the first person to find locations of hidden clues. Brian:Sounds great. Where can I find out more about it? Doctor:I’ve got a friend who belongs to an orienteering club. I’ll give you her number. Brian:Super. Thanks. III – My Two Best Friends Complete the sentences with a possessive noun or pronoun and a gerund. ,[object Object]

My boss’s criticizing (My boss/criticize) my work is hard to deal with, so Bob’s encouragement is vital.
