Why do we need data sheets and data books?
● the physical properties of the parts and components (size, weight
etc)
● the material from which the parts and components are made
● how well a part or component will perform in a given environment
or under a given set of conditions (temperature, humidity, shock,
vibration etc)
● the appearance (colour, surface finish, coatings and other
treatments) of the parts
● the conformance of the parts with UK, EU, international and other
standards.
Engineers need precise and accurate information on the components
and parts that they work with. They need to know about:

A typical data sheet (2)
● the type number and series of the component (14CF)
● a brief description of the component (low-cost potentiometer, 1W rating etc)
● the main features of the component (compact, close tolerance etc)
● the materials from which the components are made (bakelite, phenolic laminate,
silver plated brass etc)
● the range of values available (100 Ω, 500 Ω, 1 kΩ etc)
● the electrical specification (tolerance, power rating etc)
● a dimensioned drawing of the components environment under a given set of
conditions (temperature, humidity, shock, vibration etc)
● a list of typical applications (power supplies, controllers etc)
The sample data sheet contains:

Other forms in which data is presented
As well as data sheets and data books, data is also presented in a
number of other forms:
● catalogues – containing information on a wide range of different
components and parts, and presented in the form of books, CD-
ROM or downloadable from the Internet
● manuals – containing detailed information on products including use
and maintenance.

Use the data sheet on the next slide to answer the following questions:
1. What is the logic function of the device?
2. How many individual logic gates are available within the device?
3. What is lowest operating temperature for a 74ALS08 device?
4. What is the nominal supply voltage for a 54ALS08?
5. Which connecting pins are used for the supply voltage?

Learning summary
These are the main points that you should have learned:
Engineers need precise and accurate information on the
components and parts that they work with.
Engineers need to know about the physical properties of the parts
and components, the material of which the parts and components
are made, how well a part or component will perform in a given
environment, what the component looks like and how it is finished,
and whether it conforms to any particular standards.
Engineers use data sheets, data books, catalogues and manuals in
order to provide them with information on components and parts.
