THECITIES.
With the camera view at eye level, we started
walking into Petaling Street. This is the view of the
city that surrounds the street, peaceful and quiet in
the morning.
A grand entrance welcomes us as we slowly approached Petaling Street. The
bustling of people walking in the streets can be seen even before reaching it. This
is a huge contrast to its surrounding shoplots which appears empty and lonely
with just a few beggars sitting by the corridors, begging for money.
Stalls overflow the streets to the extend that it exceeds the entrance even.
Walking into the streets, old buildings line
the way with some occasionally renovated
hotels popping up here and there. Stalls
cram the whole street, leaving only a small
lane for the pedestrians.
Bird eye view of Petaling Street
The main streets are clean and maintained, lit up by
fluorescent light bulbs coming from every stall. It seems like
the street could go on with stalls selling different varieties
of products, but as we continue walking along it, we realize
that the products sold are all almost similar with only
different faces promoting them at different prices.
Dark alleys like this slot in between the streets, which
could have been unnoticeable if there were no chairs and
tables in front of it.
They were dark, dirty with slimy water covering
the floor, smelling like rotten cabbages. These
alleys were a huge contrast to the streets
outside as they were poorly maintained. The
people do not even look as the rats brush pass
their feet, as if they were numb to the poor
hygiene of this place.
Finally we came to the end of the alley, which
seemed lonely and uncared for as the crowd
disperses from the centre point of the street.
ISSUES
1. Cleanliness of the street can
be improved
2. Development of street and
surrounding is in contrast.
3. Goods sold throughout the
street does not reflect the
culture of Malaysia.
4. Insufficient Space for
pedestrian and poor ventilation.
CONCLUSION:
•CLEANLINESSOF THE STREET CANBEIMPROVED
•DEVELOPMENT OFSTREET ANDSURROUNDING
ISINCONTRAST.
Cleanliness are due to seller
didn’t take care of their store
and the customer simply throw
rubbish around. This will lead to
the street become dirty and less
customer will come, this will
cause the fall of the economics.
Meanwhile, there are some
store kept their store and street
clean. If you walk through the
street, you will see some seller
kept their place clean.
-Petaling Street is the gold mine
of business where it is located
at which have many residents
area on the restaurant area.
However, the business are more
likely to be small shops. The
sellers didn’t clean their 9place
while doing their business.
The government might charge
the place of not keeping it clean
and it won’t become a perfect
place.
Cleanliness of streets
-Ling Hui Sim
CONCLUSION:
•CLEANLINESSOF THE STREET CANBEIMPROVED
•DEVELOPMENT OFSTREET ANDSURROUNDING
ISINCONTRAST.
Development of streets
and surroundings
-Lim Yee Qun
The issue is inspired by the difference
between city and outskirts in the book
‘Invisible City”. Petaling Street is
located near the downtown of Kuala
Lumpur. In contrast, it sells imitation,
crowded by foreign workers, having an
unhealthy environment. As an
developing country, the capital
developed rapidly, but this street
remains undeveloped due to the
negligence of government. Most of
the stalls here is temporarily operated
without an efficient system. Cheaper
accommodation cause the crowd of
foreign worker who aspire to work
inside the downtown. Density of the
poor in Petaling Street reminds me
the issue ‘the gap of poverty and
wealthy’ which is concerned around
the world.
Losing Cultural Identity
-Shirley Liew
When the phenomenon
promotes the integration of
societies and has provided
millions of people with new
opportunities, it brings to a loss
of unique of local culture.
All of the goods imported from
outside but not adapted to our
context. Aren’t we need to
promote our multi-culture at
the first place? We were lost in
between economic
development and retention of
culture.
CONCLUSION:
•CLEANLINESSOF THE STREET CANBEIMPROVED
•DEVELOPMENT OFSTREET ANDSURROUNDING
ISINCONTRAST.
Insufficient space &
Poor ventilation
-Chung Wei Jin
Shops over crowd the walk way
with existing shoplots and the
addition of two more rows of stalls
lining the streets. This leaves only
a small lane for pedestrian, making
it hot and stuffy in between
streets. This happens as Petaling
Street is a traditional marketplace
that has exists for a long time. It
sells different kinds of cheap
imitations of branded goods which
obtained good responses from
tourists and locals likewise. More
and more similar stalls are set up
which eventually overcrowds the
streets. If this issue is not solved,
the street might end up like
Procopia, with people walking over
each other, hitting elbows and
brushing knees.
