3. Welcome to Suburbia and thanks for vis-
iting. This short book is designed for our
friends and partners, as well as the strang-
ers who ask us about alternative data.
With connected devices talking to cloud
services, data about the world around
us is booming. This creates opportunities
for businesses but also, rightly, concerns
about privacy.
I believe there is a way to use this ‘alterna-
tive data’ in a way that benefits everyone,
and that the outcome of data-driven deci-
sion making is only as good as the data you
have in the first place.
In the following pages, you’ll discover
Suburbia’s unique approach and technolo-
gy for collating vast amounts of data from
multiple sources while respecting and pro-
tecting privacy. Whether you are from a
company that generates data, or an analyst
looking for new insights, I hope this book
spurs you into thinking differently about the
opportunities ahead, together.
Welcome to the future of data.

4. Suburbia has developed cutting-edge
technology to turn vast amounts of data
into fast and reliable intelligence. We call
this alternative data and at Suburbia,
we use this to help generate predictive
insights for businesses and investors.
In addition, we respect people and pri-
vacy as we never ingest or process per-
sonal information. So our data solutions
transform data into a renewable re-
source - it’s clean, sustainable and bet-
ter for the planet!
DATA IS NOW
THE WORLD’S
MOST VALUABLE
RESOURCE.
5. WITH MORE ALTERNATIVE DATA
AVAILABLE THAN EVER BEFORE THE
MOST SUCCESSFUL FIRMS WILL LIKELY BE
THOSE THAT LEVERAGE (DATA) ACROSS
THEIR BUSINESS TO GENERATE VALUE
FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR CLIENTS.
– UBS Asset Management, 2019
6. DATA
PROVIDERS
are able to monetize their existing data, gaining knowl-
edge and insights to grow their business and keep their
customers happy without sharing any sensitive data.
DATA
USERS
receive access to global data sources in one turnkey
solution. Data is normalized with a single format, making
comparisons easier and insights faster.
NADA. ZERO. ZILCH.
NO PERSONAL DATA.
7. CAN DATA MONETIZATION
AND PRIVACY CO-EXIST?
SPOILER
ALERT:
YES, THEY CAN.
Ensuring data privacy should rightly be a chief
concern for every company that is dealing with
highly sensitive customer data. It’s not important
just from a compliance perspective, but essential
for building customer trust and loyalty.
But opportunities to monetize non-personal
data are often overlooked. Companies may
ask, “How can my data be valuable if it’s
missing certain pieces of the puzzle?” They
assume the personal details form the critical
components. But in fact, an aggregated,
anonymized form of the data could still form
a complete picture for others. These could be
people in different markets and industries, like
economists, analysts or investors looking to
identify patterns and trends.
FORWARD-THINKING
FIRMS WILL
UNDERSTAND HOW
THEY CAN TURN
THEIR DATA INTO
PROFIT WHILE
HAVING THE
UTMOST RESPECT
FOR PRIVACY.
9. TRADITIONAL
DATA
V
ALTERNATIVE
DATA
VS
TRADITIONAL
DATA
ALTERNATIVE
DATA
In a world that is more connected and
complex, Suburbia’s alternative data can
provide better insights because it is:
• Collected faster, from more sources
• Shared in multiple modern formats
• Consistently scalable across
geographies
• Granular, allowing for more accurate
analysis
Traditional data, like quarterly corporate
earnings and government reports, struggle
to keep up with modern insights because
they are:
• Collected slowly and updated infrequently
• Measured in broadly the same way they
were decades ago
• Shared in difficult-to-access formats
and channels
• Often self-reported or suffering from
panel bias
10. Data exhaust refers to the excess data that
is generated as a byproduct of a company’s
operations. It’s all the data the firm might not
know what to do with, or might not think is
relevant to its core business. This amount is
much bigger than you think – on average,
between 60% to 73% of all data within an
enterprise goes unused.
However, with advances in IoT, machine
learning and artificial intelligence, this rapidly
growing volume of exhaust could hold much
untapped potential. In fact, this data exhaust
could end up being converted into valuable
fuel, whether for better decision-making or
new ancillary revenue.
DATA EXHAUST?WHAT
IS
NO, IT DOESN’T
REFER TO THE
EXHAUSTING NATURE
OF BIG DATA. (THOUGH
THERE IS SOMETHING
TO BE SAID ABOUT
THAT TOO!)
11. DATA VALUE CHECKLIST
Your firm could be generating valuable data that you are overlooking
because it may not be core to your business. We are always looking
for new partners, companies with data about products and services
being sold around the world. With Suburbia, you can leverage this data
without compromising the privacy of your customers – we never accept
or process personally identifiable information.
Consider the points below to discover how valuable your data could be.
Does it track real-world trends?
Is it unique?
Can it be anonymized?
Is it collected daily or at least weekly?
Does it have granularity, like brand and
product details?
Is it collected consistently, without gaps?
Do you have archives of historical data?
