2. A Well Integrity incident and breach of Well integrity envelope has the potential to escalate into catastrophic events. The
event can result in harm to people, damage to Assets and the environment, and to the reputation of the Operator. It can easily be
either of them or in case of a major event, all of the above.
Financial impact can be very high; loss of revenue of the hydrocarbons that escape, damage to the reservoir as a result of the
uncontrolled flow and collateral damages has the potential to bring an Operator in financial dire straits.
Several incidents in the recent past have shown that even the largest Operator can barely manage such financial drain. It is
therefore of critical importance that the well integrity envelope is properly designed, constructed and maintained during it life
cycle: Sustained Well Integrity Management (WIM).
This Master Class combines several engineering disciplines involved in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of
wells and their interaction on assuring well integrity.
It illustrates the large extend in the organization and its effects on well integrity. It aims to enable common understanding of the
often-conflicting targets within the disciplines in achieving this. It touches on Failure Mode and Effect Analyses (FMEA), barrier
testing and record keeping.
The knowledge and skills to make critical decision throughout well life cycle is vital, not only for WIM purpose as well as for
economic value. Focus is on theWell Integrity management systems and interfaces with other teams in the organization. Integrity
barriers are defined, Well Failure Model and how to estabish one is discussed as well how to create an efficient well integrity
organization.
The ultimate objective is to optimize productivity at lowest unit operating cost and to maintain mechanical integrity

Rein Maatjes is a retired well-known and respected Well Services Operation specialist. After a career of
over 35 years with Shell, in various management positions in several locations around the world, Rein is
currently keeping himself occupied with consulting and lecturing in his field of expertise.

He is the CEO of Lowlands an independent company providing Management consult and lecturing services to the E&P industry. Rein
has worked on both land and offshore operations in the Far East, Central Africa, several countries in the Middle East and in East Russia
in Arctic offshore operations. His career path includes the managing of multi-cultural Well Services Operation teams, skill pool
manager, Head of Well Engineering Contracts and Global Procurement for Shell. He is frequently consulted by peers inside and
outside Shell for advice on Well Intervention problems. Within Shell he was The Technical Authority for Well Integrity. When Shell
decided to create a global standard system for Well Integrity Management System, he found himself involved in this project. His
accountability as Well Services Operation Manager included the mentoring of young local engineers, selecting training needs for
them and managing their competence profile. He was in this capacity involved in the setting-up of Shell’s global Well Engineering
training matrix, which was used for Competence based Development of the global Well Services skill pool. Summary of his
professional achievement: Co-author of several SPE papers on impairment removal in horizontal wells using coil tubing and
improved depth accuracy when perforating horizontal wells with coil without the use of stiff-wire. Rein has been part of a Shell team
that has set the fastest offshore development from drilling an exploration well to 4,500 mtr, abandon it, re-drill a production well till
putting the well in production. Today, this record still stands. His most recent recognition was a Gold Chairman’s Award (2010) given
to his previous team, by H.E. the Minister of Oil and Gas in Oman, for the High Pressure Fracturing Operation modus operandi he
developed together with the service Provider.
