February 2015
IN THIS ISSUE
Many of us celebrate love using the symbol
of a heart during the month of February.
The American Heart Association has
designed February as American Heart
Month as a time to learn about your risks for
heart disease and strokes and stay “heart
healthy” for yourself and loved ones.
Cardiovascular disease (including stroke,
heart disease and high blood pressure) is the
number one killer of men and women in the
United States.
Go Red For Women
This Friday, February 6, 2015, the American
Heart Association is hosting the annual GO
RED FOR WOMEN observance. This annual
event encourages you to wear red in support
of the women (and men) who are diagnosed
with heart disease each year.
Make your plans to wear something red in
your wardrobe this Friday. Encourage your
co-workers and office mates to join you. You
can post yourself, friends, family and co-
workers on social media using the hashtag
#GoRed.
Share Your Story
We also hope that you’ll share any
participation by your office or work group
with us. You can send photos to
michael.t.hickerson@tn.gov and we’ll be
share them other members of the F&A family
and the state wellness council.
So don’t forget to wear your red this
Friday.

Wednesday, February 4 is World Cancer
Day.
Each year this observance unites the world’s
population in the fight against cancer. It aims
to save millions of preventable deaths each
year by raising awareness and education
about the disease and pressing governments
and individuals across the world to take
action.
Taking place under the tagline ‘Not beyond
us’, World Cancer Day 2015 will take a
positive and proactive approach to the fight
against cancer, highlighting that solutions do
exist across the continuum of cancer, and
that they are within our reach.
The campaign will explore how we can
implement what we already know in the
areas of prevention, early detection,
treatment and care, and in turn, open up to
the exciting prospect that we can impact the
global cancer burden – for the better.
World Cancer Day is a unique opportunity to
raise awareness that there is much that can
be done at an individual, community and
governmental level, to harness and mobilize
these solutions and catalyze positive change.
By moving forward together we have the
potential to show cancer it is not beyond us.
You can find out more at the World Cancer
Day Web site.
