At the MI Gathering in Vancouver Austria and Sweden presented the initiative to organise the first Mission Innovation Multilateral Call for R&D projects in 2019. This call will be hosted by the Joint Programming Platform Smart Energy Systems, that already gathers 30 public funders from 23 European and associated countries (www.eranet-smartenergysystems.eu)

3. 3MI Prep Meeting, February 2019, Santiago de Chile
Pilot Multilateral Call for
Cooperative RDI Projects (Res & Ind)
The initiative intends to initiate and finance multilateral Mission Innovation
cooperative RDI Projects (research and industry), based on a well-established
model and leveraging on the existing Joint Programming Plattform Smart Energy
Systems (JPP SES - 30 public funding partners from 23 European countries). It
intends to launch of a Pilot Multilateral Call for projects in the field of Storage
Systems and Storage integration in Autumn 2019.
• The call shall be announced at the MI#4 (together with the MI working group on collaborative models
and the ICs 1,7, and 8), inviting all interested Mission Innovation Countries.
• Deliverable: Organise a side event at MI#4 in Vancouver (information, discussing call topics, first
matchmaking opportunities).
• In preparation of the Launch in Vancouver, appropriate collaboration partners in interested MI
countries shall be identified and contacted and briefed on the collaborative funding model

Links to MI Action Plan Objectives
• 1. Encouraging public sector support for clean energy research and innovation
• 2. Promoting private sector engagement and investment, particularly in key Innovation Challenges
• 3. Boosting international collaboration and accelerating progress to address key Innovation Challenges
(in collaboration with IC# 1, 8, 7)
• 4. Engaging and informing MI members and the wider clean energy community
5. 5MI Prep Meeting, February 2019, Santiago de Chile
How is this Unique
• First Pilot for a multilateral format for Public-public-private partnership for funding of R&D projects.
The initiative will pilot a first multilateral MI call for collaborative RDI projects (research and industry),
including a process how to initiate, jointly finance and monitor those projects.
• It will also introduce a model how to form an active knowledge community of families of projects,
together with associated partners from regional business clusters, need owners and technology
adopters.
• With the associated partner model, the platform has also started to develop a mechanism to involve
additional funds and financers in order to help closing the gap from RTD towards market introduction.
6. 6MI Prep Meeting, February 2019, Santiago de Chile
How can this be delivered by 2020
• Using the established structures, procedures and resources of the Joint Programming Platform Smart
Energy Systems (JPP SES), it will be possible to launch the call in autumn 2019 and to present a first set
of jointly financed MI projects in Spring 2020 (MI#5).
7. 7MI Prep Meeting, February 2019, Santiago de Chile
Why Mission Innovation
• Mission Innovation is an RDI focused global initiative, focussing on RDI collaboration for future low carbon
energy technology. It has a high political relevance and commitment. Starting from a commitment to raise
national RDI budgets and efforts in collaboration with other nations world-wide, the MI ICs have shown high
dynamic and driving force to gather RTD stakeholders from round the world and to establish multilateral
RTD agendas. By adding a network of public funders and establishing appropriate procedures, it could
evolve into a global initiative that is able to regularly promote multilateral RDI projects in cooperation of
research and industry stakeholders. Those projects could in next steps serve as an interface for the
engagement of private sector financers- one of the key goals of Mission Innovation- taking R&D (research
and development) projects further into RDD (research, development and demonstration) projects as well as
financing start-up companies evolving from those projects.
• The initiative for the pilot multilateral call in 2019 intends to create a learning environment to gain
experiences on which further MI development and decisions can be based.
• The Joint Programming Platform Smart Energy Systems started in 2014, based on former experiences from
the European network “ERA-Net Smart Grids”, in order to establish a sustainable multilateral collaboration
platform for public funding programs. Starting with a group of European Countries, its original intention was
to reach out its activities beyond Europe at some point. Mission Innovation would be the ideal environment
to take this next step to make it a global collaboration platform.

Main Features of the JPP SES
Supporting Multilateral RDI Projects
The funding partners of JPP SES jointly provide financial
support to transnational research, development and
innovation (RDI) projects.
Hosting Families of Projects
The multilateral projects with their partners from industry,
network and infrastructure providers, research and academia
as well as regions and cities are dealing with technology,
market and adoption aspects. Within the Knowledge
Community they team up with other transnational and
international projects.
Building a Knowledge Community
Experts from different projects are organised in working
groups and working on the tailor-made digital cooperation
platform expera.
Establishing Partnership and Collaboration Mechanisms
Public funding partners from national and sub-national level
are working together in a sustainable and supportive
framework. They are teaming up with associated partners
from regional business and government, from the start-up and
SME sector, with additional funders and financers as well as
providers of digital platforms in order to build bridges in the
whole innovation chain.
The joint programming platform on Smart Energy Systems is providing a
sustainable collaboration mechanism for funding programs, in order to finance
multilateral RDI projects, creating a supportive innovation ecosystem linked to an
accelerating impact network
