  2. 2. Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary is a high school in Cloverdale and is considered to be in the public sector. A public sector is “necessary for society” as it does “public good” and it includes “…sport, age- related programs, events, arts, leadership, etc.” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 3). This is a physical education and recreation example because it provides “…opportunities for both genders, all age groups, all ethnic groups, and special interest groups” in light of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Lunn, 2020, pg. 5). High schools can improve mental health, decrease stress, anxiety and depression through physical education. It can immensely aid a students growth in their development years by staying active, managing emotions and betters social skills. 6151 180 St, Surrey, BC V3S4L5 Photo used from: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/19/Lord_Tweedsmuir_%28main_entr ance_2010%29.jpg/220px-Lord_Tweedsmuir_%28main_entrance_2010%29.jpg
  3. 3. Cloverdale Athletic Park Cloverdale Athletic Park is a public community park that provides everyone their “need for recreation” as it is “essential to a person’s physical and social well-being and to overall quality of life” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 5). This is in the public sector as parks are “deemed a public good” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 5). It connects to both coaching and recreation because offering public leisure and recreation services does good for the community whilst enhancing quality of life and well-being for everyone (Lunn, 2020). Parks are a great way to help one stay active whether it be walking through it or training amongst the turf. It gives peace of mind to every individual which, under the level of federal government terms, “promotes health and well-being through recreation and sport” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 4). This park is used by various sports clubs such as Surrey FC, International Women’s Open Fastpitch, and many others thus connecting to coaching. 4. 4. Cloverdale Recreation Centre Cloverdale Recreational Centre is considered as a public sector as they promote values and ideals to maintain a healthy lifestyle for the individual (Lunn, 2020). This is an example of recreation because under the municipal level of government, public recreation “encourages the development of recreation programs and facilities” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 5). Cloverdale Rec Centre serves as a basis for the need of the total community and provides countless of opportunities for overall quality of life (Lunn, 2020). 5. 5. Alice McKay Building The Alice McKay Building is used for many purposes such as boxing fights, wrestling, dog training, and children’s dances and are all considered to be indoor commercial recreation making it part of the commercial sector (Lunn, 2020). The building serves a purpose that satisfies the consumer’s desires whilst creating “revenue from fees” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 6). It connects to both coaching and recreation as it is leisure to watch boxing and wrestling matches and coaches for boxing. This would mean that since it is commercial recreation, in which “the consumer pays while the supplier expects to make a profit”, it is based on demand and consumer desire (Lunn, 2020, pg. 6). Boxing and wrestling promotes health and an active lifestyle making it a recreational activity. 17607-17905 62 Ave, Surrey, BC V3S1V3 Photo used from: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/71/Alice_McKay_Building.jpg/220p x-Alice_McKay_Building.jpg
  6. 6. Surrey Christian School – Cloverdale Campus 5950 179 St, Surrey, BC V3S9V9 The Surrey Christian School is considered to be commercial in which “the consumer pays and the supplier expects profit” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 6). In this case, the parent pays and sign their child(s) to gain a better understanding of themselves physically, socially and mentally. This is an example of Physical Education as students will try to develop their basic movement skills through PE. Students will also be working on their physical and social well-being through physical education as well as learn new opportunities. A primary focus on play would substantially help the leaders and teachers of this facility. 7. 7. Planet Lazer 19033 54 Ave, Surrey, BC V3S4R1 Planet Laser is part of the commercial sector as it offers services such as leisure and entertainment (Lunn, 2020). The place is mainly profit oriented and creates revenue from fees and focuses on the general public (Lunn, 2020). This is connected to recreation as it “promotes health and well-being through recreation and sports” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 4). Laser tag keeps you active as you must keep moving so as to not get tagged by a laser. It indirectly promotes health and well-being by repetitively doing the same movement that burns countless of calories. Under the municipal level of government, laser tag is considered to “act as a catalyst for recreation development in the community” and its primary clients are mainly general public (Lunn, 2020, pg. 5). It also helps with mental health as laser tag is a great way to distract your mind into doing something else for a short amount of time with the people you love thus resulting in increased levels of confidence and can result in a better performance. 8. 8. Surrey FC Surrey, BC Surrey FC stands for Surrey Football Club and is located in Surrey in which practices are done in various soccer fields throughout Surrey. Surrey FC is considered to be a non-profit organization thus making it part of the voluntary sector. This organization has “ties to local communities and are operated primarily by volunteers” (ie. the coaches, assistant coaches, etc.) (Lunn, 2020, pg. 8). This is connected to coaching and recreation as not only do coaches pave the way for their team during the season but they are the ones who teach the kids about FMS and BMS. Playing any kind of sport can be considered recreation, Surrey FC promotes health and living a better lifestyle by staying active through their club. Surrey FC meets some of the requirements to sustain now and into the future such as focusing on fundraising and investing in the future (Lunn, 2020). Under the level of federal government, an accord was made establishing that public and voluntary sectors create collaborative relationships in order to address “…the needs of society, including leisure and recreation” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 10). Surrey FC focuses on local communities, general public, like-minded individuals as part of the organization’s team, and is based on the soccer seasons to be able to participate in the events and practices. 9. 9. Canadian Open Fastpitch The Women’s Canadian Open Fastpitch is part of the volunteer sector. To be admitted to watch the softball games, customers must buy tickets. Those workers at the gates and tickets, field work, and setting games up are all volunteers. Volunteer sectors are primarily ran by volunteers and in the Canada Open Fastpitch, almost all the workers are volunteers (Lunn, 2020). This is connected to recreation and coaching as the players are being coached in their sport and softball is a recreational activity. Playing softball helps keep you active and promote a healthier lifestyle. 10. 10. Cloverdale Community Football Association P.O. Box 36024 Hillcrest Village PO, Surrey, BC V3S7Y5 The Cloverdale Community Football Association (CCFA) is an example of a volunteer sector as they appreciate the need for volunteers in their community. Similar to that of the Canadian Open Fastpitch for women, the workers you see mainly consist of volunteers thus making it part of the volunteer sector and not the commercial sector (Lunn, 2020). This is connected to both recreation and coaching as the only way to get better in a sport is through practice with a coach whilst promoting healthy habits. Playing sports help develop our social well-being, both BMS and FMS, and our mental health thus creating the love for the game. CCFA does not only excel in the coaching aspect but also the leisure aspect as the parents of the kids are competitive and enjoy engaging with their team as much as they can. CCFA makes it so that it is “good for the society and community as a whole” as they are “organized, non-profit distributing, self-governing, and voluntary” (Lunn, 2020, pg. 8). With the volunteers working alongside them, it creates an amazing and positive atmosphere for the players to be in thus making it a great investment for both parties.
