and CEO of The Rockaway Youth Task Force, a youth civic service
organization he established in 2011. In 2013, Milan Taylor was
recognized for his community achievements with a nomination for
the Do Something Awards.
Established in 1996, the Do Something Awards recognize the
achievements of young people under the age of 25 who have
meaningfully impacted their community, or the world. Each year,
five finalists win $10,000 in grant money, in addition to media
coverage, to further their initiatives. A grand prize of a $100,000
grant is presented to the winner.
Geared toward encouraging and empowering youth involvement in
a wide range of causes, Do Something also offers college
scholarships for young adults, which can be obtained through fun,
unique application processes.
3. Scholarships
• Students can win the Smiles for Soldiers $5,000 scholarship by
sending a thank you card to a member of the US Armed Forces. The
goal of the scholarship is to ensure individuals in the military feel
appreciated and connected.
The Pack That Ash Up scholarship is worth $2,000, and is granted
to select youth who participate in a text message tip-sharing process
that teaches young people how to help a friend stop smoking.
The Game Winning Drive campaign encourages teens to host sport
equipment drives in their community, to give young people in
under-served areas the chance to participate in a sport. The
campaign supplies students with important statistics, tips on how to
get involved, and flyer templates to help them organize their own
drives, as well as an entry for a $5,000 scholarship.
