This introductory workshop offers you a thorough introduction to typesetting and presswork.
Essential for any beginning printer or printmaker, this class will cover the basics of Vandercook
press operation, studio tools and procedures, typography, image-making techniques and edition

Whether you own your own "clam-shell" or have never even seen a press, this popular class is a
good introduction to letterpress printing. Set lead type by hand, learn to fit it into a chase, and
letterpress print editions of your own design. This class will offer the chance for students to use
both MCBA’s foot-operated treadle platen press and tabletop presses safely in this
comprehensive workshop. Also open to those who want to bring their own tabletop press. All skill

Create Your Own Magical World: Creative Writing and Bookmaking

Explore the timeless territory of magic in this special combo class with MCBA and Loft staff.
Students will record the hair-raising adventures of a main character, the hero, who sets out on a
magical journey to save a troubled world and, along the way, encounters menacing villains and
mystical beings. Invent your own setting, characters and plot. Then bring your magical world to life
in a pop-up book you make yourself! The day includes a 30-minute supervised lunch break; please

Thanksgiving Paper Dinner
Saturday, November 12, 10 am -- 12 noon
Celebrate the colors and aromas of Thanksgiving dinner by "cooking" up some paper. Start by
pulling sheets of white paper, then add onion-skin yellow, cabbage purple, cranberry red, citrus
orange and more! Use herbs and spices such as crumpled sage, grated cinnamon and nutmeg,
too. Waterproof shoes are suggested. Join Ellen Ferrari for Saturday mornings of family book arts
fun. Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into a
book arts project. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and
children (or adult/child teams) may choose to work together or side-by-side. Each participant
receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working
with his or her partner. Ellen will provide older children with suggestions for extending their learning.

Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership Great River Outing: Inside the Grain Belt Complex

It’s time to get out and learn how you can impact the revitalization of the Mississippi riverfront in
Minneapolis! The 2011 ‘Great River Outings' and event series, sponsored by Minneapolis
Riverfront Partnership, offers unique walking tours, diverse forums based on Mississippi river
issues and entries into exclusive spaces that neighbor the River. This tour will go inside both the
Grain Belt Office Building and the Grain Belt Brewhouse, with guides from the City of Minneapolis
and RSP Architects. Participation is limited to the first 50 who register. Co-hosted with RSP
Architects, Sheridan Neighborhood Organization and the City of Minneapolis. At each Great River
Outing event, guides with experience in fields like ecology, history, community planning and
preservation will tell the ‘stories behind the story’ and give participants a greater understanding of
how the community can facilitate and support coordinated revitalization of the Mississippi riverfront
in Minneapolis. Tours and events will be held regardless of inclement weather. Participants are
strongly urged to pre-register online; however, when space allows organizers will accept last

Reading and Open Mic: Literature and Transnational Adoption -- Lee Herrick
Wednesday, November 9, 7 pm
Come for an evening of poetry featuring Lee Herrick, followed by an open mic. For those
interested in participating in the open mic, please sign up the night of the event. Each participant
will have 3-5 minutes to read. Lee Herrick was born in Daejeon, South Korea and adopted at ten
months old. He is the author of This Many Miles from Desire (Word Tech Editions, 2007) and has
recently completed his second book manuscript, Gardening Secrets of the Dead. His poems have
been published in The Bloomsbury Review, Berkeley Poetry Review, ZYZZYVA, among others,
and in anthologies such as Highway 99: A Literary Journey through California’s Great Central
Valley, 2nd Edition; Seeds from a Silent Tree: Writing by Korean Adoptees; and The Place That
Inhabits Us: Poems from the San Francisco Bay Watershed. He is also the editor of New Truths:
Writing in the 21st Century by Korean Adoptees. He lives in Fresno, California, where he teaches

editorial board of Creative Nonfiction and is coordinating editor for W.W. Norton’s Best Creative
Nonfiction. Rebecca Dosch Brown (poetry) lives in media res in Northeast Minneapolis with her
husband, an electronic composer, and their bright son, whose name means ‘sun’ in Japanese. She
has been a teacher of creative writing, EFL and cultural awareness, and she has also enjoyed
stints as a gardener, translator, editor and an apprentice in modern bonsai and tile-making. She
has published poems, translations and prose in publications such as Kyoto Journal, Briar Cliff
Review, Shi to Shisou and mnartists.org. Diana Xin (fiction) moved from China to Minnesota when
she was three, but spent the past year back in Beijing. She holds bachelor's degrees in journalism
and creative writing from Northwestern University. Her writing has been published in the Alaska
Quarterly Review, and she was recipient of Northwestern University's 2008 Tri Quarterly Prize in

Publication Reading: Jill Breckenridge -- Miss Priss and the Con Man

In Miss Priss and the Con Man, published by Nodin Press, noted author Jill Breckenridge tells the
story of her charismatic yet wildly unreliable father, whose pursuit of that elusive “big deal” led to
financial disaster and a prison term. It’s a tale of silver mines, movie stars, booze and violence, told
from the perspective of the little girl who lived through it all. Jill Breckenridge grew up in the West,
but now lives and writes in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She and playwright John Fenn raised a
combined family of five children. A former director of The Loft Literary Center, she originated the
Mentor Series, a program connecting national and local writers. Jill won the Bluestem Award,
judged for her book of poems, How to Be Lucky. Her sequence of poetry and prose about the Civil
War, Civil Blood, was published by Milkweed Editions. The book was nominated for the American
Library Association’s Notable Books of 1986. Jill’s honors include a Bush Foundation Fellowship,
two Minnesota State Arts Board grants and Loft-McKnight Awards in both poetry and prose. Jill
holds an MFA in creative writing and a master’s degree in counseling psychology, with an

Second Story Reading: Kelly Barnhill and Anne Ursu

Second Story is the Loft's reading series for authors of books for children and young adults. This
month's reading features novelists Kelly Barnhill and Anne Ursu. The series is curated by authors
Swati Avasthi and Heather Bouwman. Kelly Barnhill has several former careers: school teacher,
bartender, waitress, janitor, activist, receptionist, park ranger and wildland firefighter. The sum of
these experiences, in total, have prepared her for absolutely nothing, save freelance writing which
she has been happily doing for the past six years. She lives in Minneapolis with her brilliant
husband, her three evil-genius children and her emotionally unstable dog. Anne Ursu is the author
of three middle grade novels that comprise the Cronus Chronicles trilogy, The Shadow Thieves,
The Siren Song and The Immortal Fire, in addition to two well-received adult books, Spilling
Clarence and The Disapparation of James. Anne is also a professor of writing for children at
Hamline University and a lifelong Minnesota Twins fan. She lives in Minneapolis with her son and
three cats.

Marine Corps Birthday and Veteran’s Day
Thursday, November 10, and Friday, November 11
November 10 marks the 236th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. The following day,
November 11, is Veterans Day. Keegan’s Pub will hold its 10th annual celebration of those events.
Marines and Marine veterans gather at Keegan’s each year to celebrate their birthday on the 10th
and veterans of all services visit the pub on Veteran’s Day. Publican Terry Keegan, himself a
Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, treats each Marine and each Veteran to a free drink and offers
SOS (creamed chip beef on toast) on the menu. “This year I have a commemorative coin for each
of the first 100 guests” said Keegan. “The free drink disappears in a hurry, but the coin can stay
with them.”

Join the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership on a walk with park historian David Smith,
Commissioner Liz Wielinski and Marshall Terrace resident and AFCAC co-facilitator Mary Jamin
Maguire to visit three riverfront park gems: Marshall Terrace, Edgewater and Gluek Riverside. The
tour will follow Marshall Street, formerly the Red River Oxcart Trail, and now the multi-state
Mississippi River Trail. We will discuss the Above the Falls and the MRDI River First plans to
complete a continuous riverfront park with walking/biking trails, connecting these riverfront parks.
On the route are the Lowry Bridge and the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization
headquarters - both currently under construction. The event will conclude with a visit to the Sample

In November 2007, writer/songwriter Jim Walsh (aka The Mad Ripple) started inviting friends both
famous and obscure to participate in a weekly songwriter circle he called The Mad Ripple
Hootenanny. Launched as a way for audiences to hear songwriters in an intimate setting where
bar-goers wouldn't talk over the songs, and as a way for musicians from various walks to meet and
collaborate, the Hoot (as it has come to be known) has provided local music fans with some of the
most spontaneous, unpredictable, magical and moving musical moments in recent memory. To
commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Hoot, and to kick off the new Hoot season, Walsh and

It’s a tale of silver mines, movie stars, booze and violence, told from the perspective of the little girl who lived through it all. Jill Breckenridge grew up in the West, but now lives and writes in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She and playwright John Fenn raised a combined family of five children. A former director of The Loft Literary Center, she originated the Mentor Series, a program connecting national and local writers. Jill won the Bluestem Award, judged for her book of poems, How to Be Lucky. Her sequence of poetry and prose about the Civil War, Civil Blood, was published by Milkweed Editions.
