Visitors and residents of the Twin Cities can now have a national park experience 24 hours a day
with Ranger on Call, a new virtual tour of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.
Ranger on Call is an audio guide to exploring some of the park’s most special places. The guide
features a series of 20 stops designed to expand users’ knowledge of the Mississippi River and
provoke exploration. Users can listen to stories from all along the 72-mile corridor of the national
park and download podcasts and maps online at www.rangeroncall.com. Or, for an all-
encompassing park experience, users can visit the featured sites along the river in person and dial

Who’s Afraid of Edith Carlson? Exhibit
October 2 -- February 19
Weisman Art Museum, 333 East River Road
The Edith Carlson Gallery is endowed by the estate of Edith Carlson, a self-described “little farm
girl from Minnesota” who went on to become an accomplished artist. She chose the Weisman for
the bequest because she admired the museum’s strong holdings in art by women. The new gallery
will allow WAM to showcase works on paper, which comprise roughly two-thirds of the museum’s
collection. Due to the delicate nature of the paper, many of these works have not had a chance to
be exhibited. In honor of Carlson’s generous gift, the inaugural exhibition will showcase her
drawings, and the gallery will rotate exhibitions three times a year. This is the first exhibition to
place her work within a broader art historical context, specifically the artist colony of Taos, New
Mexico, where she received her artistic training. This remote mountain outpost has long been a
haven for artists, including Marsden Hartley, who seek to escape the urbanity and “scene” of the
city and invariably are captivated by the expanse and light of the desert. For information:

Mill City Farmers Market – Eating Local Year-Round
Possted by http://MillCityTimes.com

Saturday, October 8, 8 am – 1 pm
Chicago Avenue between Second Street South and West River Parkway
Even well-intentioned locavores fall off the wagon when winter in Minnesota approaches. We’ve
heard it before: “I like supporting local foods, but I can only eat so many turnips!” Eating local year
round in Minnesota is challenging, but it only takes a little bit of planning to enjoy a locally grown
and varied diet throughout the winter. To help you be a successful and full-time local foods
consumer, the Market made this helpful guide. At this week’s 10 a.m. Cooking Demo, local food
writer and cooking instructor, Beth Dooley will join Heather Hartman in the demo kitchen to answer
the question, “How do you eat local foods year round… in Minnesota?” They’ll be making two
delicious autumn recipes: Squash Soup with Thai Spices and a Smoked Trout, Apple and Fennel
Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette. Meet Your Vegetables from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Get down
with greens! Try a simple preparation of Swiss chard and take home the recipe. Ask the interns
about the nutritional benefits of these veggies and learn how to preserve them from the market to
keep eating local into the winter. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Vocalist Karen Quiroz presents a
stunning repertoire of popular music from Brazil and Latin America; non-stop rhythm, lush
harmonics, and melodies intimately delivered in Portuguese and Spanish. All day, the Community
Booth will feature North House Folk School, an educational non-profit on the shores of Lake
Superior in Grand Marais, Minnesota. They foster a non-competitive learning environment devoted
to teaching traditional northern craft in over 350 courses year round, including everything from
timber framing to basketry, wood carving to foods and fiber arts. The Art Market will feature The Ink
Orchard, ceramics by Guillermo Cuellar, Barnswallow Garden, and woodwork by Jim Benson.. For
more information (including what products are expected at the market this week – don’t forget your
shopping list), recipes and to sign up for the market’s email newsletter: http://www.

Partners in Preservation Open Houses
Saturday, October 8, 9 am – 12 noon at Mill Ruins Park (west end of Stone Arch Bridge), and
Saturday, October 8, 1 – 4 pm at Minnehaha Park (near Sea Salt)
Join the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) at Mill Ruins Park and Minnehaha Park
on Saturday, October 8. Stop by the MPRB information tent to learn more about the Partners in
Preservation contest and the historical significance of each site. A public open house at all 25
sites nominated in the Partners in Preservation program will be held next weekend. The community
can tour and learn more about each of the historic places selected to participate in Partners in
Preservation, a community-based program that will bring $1 million in preservation grants to
historic places in the Twin Cities. At Mill Ruins Park, stroll along the Stone Arch Bridge, observe
the power of the St. Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River and learn more about the story of the
historic mill ruins that are now part of the Minneapolis’ dynamic and growing riverfront development
area. At Minnehaha Park, visitors can learn more about the rich history of the park, pick up maps
and historical information about the area and vote for the site while enjoying spectacular views of
the highest waterfall on the Mississippi River, Minnehaha Falls. (Note: I received a notice about
these two open houses, but expect that open houses also are planned for the other two riverfront
projects in the running – the Soap Factory and Fort Snelling.) Remember to vote daily on
Facebook for your favorite project to receive preservation funding through October 12.

Norwegian Folk Music Concert
Sunday, October 9, 5 pm
Danish American Center, 3030 West River Parkway South
The Norwegian Folk Music Trio Geitungen will be featured in a concert at the Danish American
Center. Geitungen plays dance music favorites from the hinterland of Rogaland County in western
Norway. The three musicians' fiddles, melodeon, mandolin, Hardanger Fele and guitars combine
to create a sound that is at the same time modern and yet reflects traditions. Cozy warm Mazurkas
mix with hot hopsars and plaintive waltzes. With their capricious and compelling playing, Geitungen
takes you back, and far out to the poorly lit dance floors of the more festive parts of rural Rogaland.
Admission is $12 per person and includes a reception with beverages and a light meal following
the concert. This is the closing events in this year’s Leiv Eriksson Festival.

general public are all invited to attend a celebratory evening of poetry, conversation, food and

*****Informational Resources*****
Park Board Event Calendar
Having fun in Minneapolis parks just got easier! The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board
(MPRB)’s website now features a multi-month event calendar. The current event calendar is now
available at http://www.minneapolisparks.org/documents/events.pdf and is a quick guide to MPRB-
sponsored and co-sponsored events as well as outside organizers’ permitted events in the parks.
Check it out, mark your calendars and enjoy the many events occurring in Minneapolis parks!

Minneapolis Riverfront District Web Site
http://www.minneapolisriverfrontdistrict.com
Meet Minneapolis’ Minneapolis Riverfront District site is a great source for information about
things to do in the Minneapolis Riverfront District, including a map.

Mill City Times
http://www.millcitytimes.com
This web site covers “life, work and play in the Historic Mill District.” It also includes an event listing
that is more expansive than the Mill District and that would be a useful resource for you in between
issues of the RiverCurrent (or if, as sometimes happens, you accidentally deleted it).

Mississippi River Trail
The Mississippi River Trail follows the course of the mighty Mississippi from its headwaters to the
Gulf. A new MRT resource website has been launched for the Minnesota segment of the trail
(http://www.dot.state.mn.us/bike/mrt.html) complete with interactive Google Earth based maps, and
a complete series of maps printable at 8 1/2” by 11.”

1 Mississippi Campaign
http://www.1mississippi.net/
This site includes information on the entire Mississippi River and how you can help protect and
enhance it.

*****Informational Updates*****
Demolition on Former Scherer Brothers Site
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has begun demolition of the buildings on its riverfront
property, formerly home to the Scherer Brothers Lumber Company, just north of the Plymouth
Avenue Bridge. Demolition began Monday, September 26. Asbestos and other hazardous
material were removed in the two weeks prior to demolition. Timbers and other salvageable
materials have also been removed. All utilities have been disconnected. Demolition is expected to
be complete by the end of October. The site is secured and off-limits to the public. The second
phase of the project -- soil remediation -- is expected to be underway in early November and
completed by the end of 2011. For further information, see the Scherer Bros Site web page on the
MPRB website.

Events around Mill City including art exhibits, farmers market and concerts

  • 1. Possted by http://MillCityTimes.com Good bye, Judith Martin (Nicollet Island resident, University professor and former City Planning Commission member/president) http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/131112948.html http://www.startribune.com/local/blogs/131140648.html http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2011/10/04/obit-judith-martin-university-director/ *****Events and Activities***** National Park Service “Ranger on Call” Virtual Tour of the Mississippi River Visitors and residents of the Twin Cities can now have a national park experience 24 hours a day with Ranger on Call, a new virtual tour of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Ranger on Call is an audio guide to exploring some of the park’s most special places. The guide features a series of 20 stops designed to expand users’ knowledge of the Mississippi River and provoke exploration. Users can listen to stories from all along the 72-mile corridor of the national park and download podcasts and maps online at www.rangeroncall.com. Or, for an all- encompassing park experience, users can visit the featured sites along the river in person and dial 1-877-727-1172 (toll free) for the cell phone tour. Ranger on Call features narration by Don Shelby, who brings to life the stories from diverse communities along the river. Tour stops feature the Minneapolis Riverfront, Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary and Lock and Dam #2 in Hastings. Ranger on Call was created by the National Park Service and the Mississippi River Fund. For more information about the park: www.nps.gov/miss. For more information about the Mississippi River Fund: www.missriverfund.org. If Walls Could Talk Tour Saturdays and Sundays, 1 pm Weisman Art Museum, 333 East River Road Public tours of the newly expanded Weisman Art Museum are offered every Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. A Weisguide will meet you at the front desk. Tours last for one hour. For information: http://weisman.umn.edu/ Who’s Afraid of Edith Carlson? Exhibit October 2 -- February 19 Weisman Art Museum, 333 East River Road The Edith Carlson Gallery is endowed by the estate of Edith Carlson, a self-described “little farm girl from Minnesota” who went on to become an accomplished artist. She chose the Weisman for the bequest because she admired the museum’s strong holdings in art by women. The new gallery will allow WAM to showcase works on paper, which comprise roughly two-thirds of the museum’s collection. Due to the delicate nature of the paper, many of these works have not had a chance to be exhibited. In honor of Carlson’s generous gift, the inaugural exhibition will showcase her drawings, and the gallery will rotate exhibitions three times a year. This is the first exhibition to place her work within a broader art historical context, specifically the artist colony of Taos, New Mexico, where she received her artistic training. This remote mountain outpost has long been a haven for artists, including Marsden Hartley, who seek to escape the urbanity and “scene” of the city and invariably are captivated by the expanse and light of the desert. • 2. Possted by http://MillCityTimes.com Saturday, October 8, 8 am – 1 pm Chicago Avenue between Second Street South and West River Parkway Even well-intentioned locavores fall off the wagon when winter in Minnesota approaches. We’ve heard it before: “I like supporting local foods, but I can only eat so many turnips!” Eating local year round in Minnesota is challenging, but it only takes a little bit of planning to enjoy a locally grown and varied diet throughout the winter. To help you be a successful and full-time local foods consumer, the Market made this helpful guide. At this week’s 10 a.m. Cooking Demo, local food writer and cooking instructor, Beth Dooley will join Heather Hartman in the demo kitchen to answer the question, “How do you eat local foods year round… in Minnesota?” They’ll be making two delicious autumn recipes: Squash Soup with Thai Spices and a Smoked Trout, Apple and Fennel Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette. Meet Your Vegetables from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Get down with greens! Try a simple preparation of Swiss chard and take home the recipe. Ask the interns about the nutritional benefits of these veggies and learn how to preserve them from the market to keep eating local into the winter. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Vocalist Karen Quiroz presents a stunning repertoire of popular music from Brazil and Latin America; non-stop rhythm, lush harmonics, and melodies intimately delivered in Portuguese and Spanish. All day, the Community Booth will feature North House Folk School, an educational non-profit on the shores of Lake Superior in Grand Marais, Minnesota. They foster a non-competitive learning environment devoted to teaching traditional northern craft in over 350 courses year round, including everything from timber framing to basketry, wood carving to foods and fiber arts. The Art Market will feature The Ink Orchard, ceramics by Guillermo Cuellar, Barnswallow Garden, and woodwork by Jim Benson.. For more information (including what products are expected at the market this week – don’t forget your shopping list), recipes and to sign up for the market’s email newsletter: http://www. millcityfarmersmarket.org. Partners in Preservation Open Houses Saturday, October 8, 9 am – 12 noon at Mill Ruins Park (west end of Stone Arch Bridge), and Saturday, October 8, 1 – 4 pm at Minnehaha Park (near Sea Salt) Join the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) at Mill Ruins Park and Minnehaha Park on Saturday, October 8. Stop by the MPRB information tent to learn more about the Partners in Preservation contest and the historical significance of each site. A public open house at all 25 sites nominated in the Partners in Preservation program will be held next weekend. The community can tour and learn more about each of the historic places selected to participate in Partners in Preservation, a community-based program that will bring $1 million in preservation grants to historic places in the Twin Cities. At Mill Ruins Park, stroll along the Stone Arch Bridge, observe the power of the St. Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River and learn more about the story of the historic mill ruins that are now part of the Minneapolis’ dynamic and growing riverfront development area. At Minnehaha Park, visitors can learn more about the rich history of the park, pick up maps and historical information about the area and vote for the site while enjoying spectacular views of the highest waterfall on the Mississippi River, Minnehaha Falls. (Note: I received a notice about these two open houses, but expect that open houses also are planned for the other two riverfront projects in the running – the Soap Factory and Fort Snelling.) Remember to vote daily on Facebook for your favorite project to receive preservation funding through October 12.
