Erin has had a dysfunctional relationship with her mother since her father left. She is intelligent but unmotivated and wants to leave her current situation. She meets a new boy named Damon who is determined to get to know her, though she does not want to trust him. They gradually become friends. It is revealed that Damon's mission from the devil is to prove humans do not deserve a second chance, and he must use Erin for this. But they fall in love, forcing Damon to choose between punishment from the devil or his love for Erin.
