ANNUAL STOCKTON BLACK FAMILY DAY HISTORY
With purpose to maintain and fulfill the Black Agenda for the 21st
Century,
Stockton’s Annual Black Family Day originated in 1969, by a Black Youth
movement of students from San Joaquin Delta College and the University of the
Pacific’s Community Involvement Program.
Black Family Day originated in 1969 as a result of a youth movement by San
Joaquin Delta College Black Student Union to address and eradicate pressing
discriminatory issues / matters of concern Black students were facing on campus
and abroad in the community. A few Black students from the University of the
Pacific Community Involvement Program (CIP) joined in on the movement to
solidify the Core Black Family Unit.
1969-1971, Black Family gathering of approximately 300 plus took place at the
residence / ranch of Dr. Hart & Family.
1972-1973 under chairmanship of Bryant Glasgow, Black Family movement
engaged in several upfront demonstrations / protest / boycotts on San Joaquin
Delta College as a result of the lack of opportunity for Blacks to participate in
sports, including administrative job position on campus. Annual Black Family
Gathering took place on the College Campus, as well as San Joaquin County
Fairgrounds.
1974-1976 under chairmanship of Willie Douglas, Annual Black Family Day with
continued youth / young adult movement engaged with other
groups/organization, with efforts in building coalition. Through this strategy, in
1978, Stockton NAACP Youth Council was started / 1981 the Black League of
Voters was founded, educating and engaging the younger generation
participation in the voters’ registration-education process. Annual Black Family
Gathering convened at the Fairgrounds from ’74-’76.
1977-1987 Annual Black Family Gathering was spearheaded and lead by the
Stockton NAACP Branch, under chairwomanship of Mabel “Jimi” Choice. The
Family Gathering convened on Labor Day of each year at the Southside
McKinley Park. During this time frame, other organizations / groups such as the
Faith Based; Black Chamber of Commerce; School’s Black Student Unions;
Nation of Islam; Esquire; Alpha Sorority; Alpha Fraternity, just to name a few
joined in the Black Family Coalition.
1988-1989 the Annual Black Family day Gathering location shifted to Van
Buskirk Community Center Park under the leadership of Inner City Theater.
1990-1993 under President Ed Nixon, Annual Black family day became Stockton
Black Family Day, Inc. and assembled in downtown Stockton at the Martin Luther
King, Jr. Plaza; the McCloud Lake Amphitheater; and Stockton Civic Auditorium.
1994-1996 under President Booker Lee is when Stockton Black Family Day was
officially incorporated.
1997-2006 under the late President Lavenna Gray, Stockton Black Family Day,
Inc., from this writer’s perspective, started to become more diversified / inclusive
with cross section of community joining in on the celebration / festival.
2007-2009 under current acting President Fayette Reynolds, again from my
perspective, expansion of program activities i.e. children pavilion / health /
Introduction of Black Film Festivals. Also, collaboration and outreach to corporate
sponsors.
2010-2011 under President Min. Tommie Muhammad, Stockton Black Family
Day Inc. assembled in downtown Stockton at Weber Point Center Park.
2012-2014 under President Charles Johnson, fees for non-profit organization
participation waived.
2015 Ms. Fayette Reynolds currently serving as Acting President
Stockton Black Family Day, over the past several years, has been widely
supported by a diverse number of individuals, groups and organizations such as:
Black Student Union; NAACP; Nation of Islam; Black League of Voters; Black
Employees Association of Stockton Unified School District; The Esquires, Inc;
African American Chamber of Commerce; Inner City Theater; San Joaquin Valley
Boys Club; Black Women’s Network; Links, Inc.; Gemini, Inc.; City of Stockton;
Delta Sigma Theta; Alpha Kappa Alpha; Alpha Phi Alpha; Sacramento Observer
Newspaper; CV Drum News and Photo Album; and the Pastors and Ministers
Alliance of Stockton and Vicinity.
