How to build support to drive change
The 8 – Steps
1. Create a sense of urgency
2. Form a Transition Team
3. Develop the Change Vision
4. Communicate for buy-in
5. Empower others to act
6. Produce short term wins
7. Don’t let up
8. Create a New Culture
Create a sense of urgency
1. Does anyone else see what you are seeing?
2. How will you help others to see the signs and
interpret them correctly?
3. How will you build a sense of urgency?
How soon can you do all this?
Form a Transition Team
1. What skills do you need in the team?
2. Who has those skills and commitment?
3. Do they share your vision and urgency?
4. Is the team a team?
Will you give up your leadership role
to someone who proves better?
Develop the change vision
1. Can you define your vision in one line?
2. What is the picture of the ‘arrived state’ that you
have in your mind?
3. Can the others see what’s in it for them?
Who else is excited by your vision?
Communicate for buy-in
1. What is an inspiring role model for your change?
2. Can you communicate the brutal facts but with
concern and compassion?
3. What mechanism do you have to constantly remind
people to act?
What is your measure for buy-in?
What is the critical mass you need to begin?
Empower others to act
1. Identify those who have bought-in early and make them
Champions of Change
2. De-link the negative thinkers
3. Differentiate between what must be made public and
what must be kept confidential – But err on the side of risk
The more who know the whole story,
the bigger your support base
Demonstrate short term gains
1. Show results as early as you can
2. Reward the Champions of Change
3. Demonstrate that your methods work
4. Show a willingness to change the method to get
better or faster results
Celebrate the battles if you want to win the war
Don’t let up
1. Measure progress – Metrics are critical
2. What change is required in our plan?
3. Measure progress
4. Focus on the ‘Arrived State’
5. Measure progress
You want to see what someone values?
See what they measure
Create a New Culture
1. Delete the ‘old way’ from the memory
2. Revel in the new identity
3. Reinforce the gains of change
4. Allow those who don’t fit, to leave
Burn the boats
Project
1. In your groups please identify a project that you
would like to work on or are working on and test it
against the steps to build support for it
2. What do to need to change in your approach?
3. Please present to the class

Building support to drive change by Mirza Yawar Baig

  • 1. How to build support to drive change
  • 2. The 8 – Steps 1. Create a sense of urgency 2. Form a Transition Team 3. Develop the Change Vision 4. Communicate for buy-in 5. Empower others to act 6. Produce short term wins 7. Don’t let up 8. Create a New Culture
  • 3. Create a sense of urgency 1. Does anyone else see what you are seeing? 2. How will you help others to see the signs and interpret them correctly? 3. How will you build a sense of urgency? How soon can you do all this?
  • 4. Form a Transition Team 1. What skills do you need in the team? 2. Who has those skills and commitment? 3. Do they share your vision and urgency? 4. Is the team a team? Will you give up your leadership role to someone who proves better?
  • 5. Develop the change vision 1. Can you define your vision in one line? 2. What is the picture of the ‘arrived state’ that you have in your mind? 3. Can the others see what’s in it for them? Who else is excited by your vision?
  • 6. Communicate for buy-in 1. What is an inspiring role model for your change? 2. Can you communicate the brutal facts but with concern and compassion? 3. What mechanism do you have to constantly remind people to act? What is your measure for buy-in? What is the critical mass you need to begin?
  • 7. Empower others to act 1. Identify those who have bought-in early and make them Champions of Change 2. De-link the negative thinkers 3. Differentiate between what must be made public and what must be kept confidential – But err on the side of risk The more who know the whole story, the bigger your support base
  • 8. Demonstrate short term gains 1. Show results as early as you can 2. Reward the Champions of Change 3. Demonstrate that your methods work 4. Show a willingness to change the method to get better or faster results Celebrate the battles if you want to win the war
  • 9. Don’t let up 1. Measure progress – Metrics are critical 2. What change is required in our plan? 3. Measure progress 4. Focus on the ‘Arrived State’ 5. Measure progress You want to see what someone values? See what they measure
  • 10. Create a New Culture 1. Delete the ‘old way’ from the memory 2. Revel in the new identity 3. Reinforce the gains of change 4. Allow those who don’t fit, to leave Burn the boats
  • 11. Project 1. In your groups please identify a project that you would like to work on or are working on and test it against the steps to build support for it 2. What do to need to change in your approach? 3. Please present to the class 30 minutes
