What Is a Network?
© 2007 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. ICND1 v1.0—1-3
Resource-Sharing Functions and Benefits:
 Data and applications
 Resources
 Network storage
 Backup devices
© 2007 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. ICND1 v1.0—1-4
Examples of Data Networks:

Need for WANs:

WANs vs. LANs:
© 2007 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. ICND1 v1.0—1-9
SANs:
 A SAN is a dedicated, high-
performance network used to
move data between servers and
storage resources.
 Because it is a separate,
dedicated network, it avoids
any traffic conflict between
clients and servers.

Common Physical Components of a Network:
© 2007 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. ICND1 v1.0—1-11
Impact of User Applications on the Network:
 Batch applications
– FTP, TFTP, inventory updates
– No direct human interaction
– Bandwidth important, but not critical
 Interactive applications
– Inventory inquiries, database updates.
– Human-to-machine interaction.
– Because a human is waiting for a
response, response time is important
but not critical, unless the wait
becomes excessive.
 Real-time applications
– VoIP, video
– Human-to-human interaction
– End-to-end latency critical

Local Area Network:

LAN Sizes:

Peer-to-Peer Network:
 In a peer-to-peer network, networked computers act as equal partners, or
peers.
 As peers, each computer can take on the client function or the server
function.
 At one time, computer A may make a request for a file from computer B,
which responds by serving the file to computer A. Computer A functions
as client, while B functions as the server. At a later time, computers A and
B can reverse roles.
 In a peer-to-peer network, individual users control their own resources.
Peer-to-peer networks are relatively easy to install and operate. As
networks grow, peer-to-peer relationships become increasingly difficult to
coordinate.
© 2007 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. ICND1 v1.0—1-15
Client/Server Network:
 In a client/server arrangement, network services are located on a
dedicated computer called a server.
 The server responds to the requests of clients.
 The server is a central computer that is continuously available to respond
to requests from clients for file, print, application, and other services.
 Most network operating systems adopt the form of a client/server
relationship.

Service Type:
 File Server.
 Print Server.
 Web Server.
 Application Server.
 Proxy Server.
 Mail Server.
 Remote Access Server.
 Database Server.
 DNS Server.
 WINS Server.
 DHCP Server.
 DC Server.
 ADC Server.
 Client
 Server
 Workstation
 Host :any device in the network that has IP address
