50. IGNOU campus was built in temporary structures about 25 years ago. With increased
demand of space, poor maintenance and lack of any architectural expression forced the
University to call for a national competition for the facelifting of the campus. After analysis
of the usage pattern, requirements and difficulties of the existing campus the proposal
looked at the pedestrian flow and inter connectivity of the blocks, lack of unity and
architectural language in the complex and difficulty of access.
A Unitarian proposal was provided creating new clear visual and physical links between
the existing blocks, demarcated and well designed areas for services, breathing pockets
of landscaped areas for interaction of staff and students and retrofit of the building
envelope. The different facades were treated differently as per their orientation to let in
more natural light, and secondly the thermal performance of the complete envelope was
looked at, researched and improved. The attempt was to depend less on air-conditioning
and artificial lighting with clear views from all the spaces.
