Week B
News on the Farm
Hello from your happy farm intern, Molly!
We weeded this week as the first yellow
leaves fell around the garden. It is a sweet
reminder of all the beautiful things that grew this
summer and how the season is waning. This is the
second to last week of my internship at Shepherd
Moon Farm and it has been a complete delight.
This season, we grew some of the most remarkable
tomatoes I’ve ever seen and enough carrots to feed
a small village (or all of you!). We also spent our
days steeped in good conversation and amazing
meals.
I am thankful for the opportunity to learn
from the experts. Terry and Julie have an amazing
knowledge of this land and the abundance of
things that grow here. They are dreamers, doers
and some of the most efficient workers I have ever
had the pleasure to shovel manure with.
But they are also experts in listening, asking
questions, communicating and loving people in
really radical ways. It has been encouraging to see
Terry’s unmatched motivation in the garden and in
her personal life (did you know she regularly
enjoys a 20+ mile bike ride BEFORE the work
day!!). And I am continuously floored by Julie’s
empathy for others and her incredible knack for
problem solving. What powerful, brilliant and
amazing women!
This summer has brought me a huge
amount of knowledge, experience and joy! I now
know how not to trim tomatoes (sorry about
that…), how cover crop works, and how to grow a
million potatoes. Thanks Terry and Julie!!!
The view Julie and I get to wake up every
single morning!!
2. Additional Information-
• B Share’s have 2 more pick ups in the main season (including this one!)
A Share’s only have 1 more pick up in the main season.
• Next week, we will be sending out a survey. We would love to hear your feedback,
so keep your eye out for that!
• Fall shares are full! Thank you everyone that is joining us this fall.
Fun Facts about Potatoes:
• Potatoes are grown in all 50 states of the
USA and in about 125 countries
throughout the world.
• The average American eats about 124
pounds of potatoes per year while
Germans eat about twice as much.
• In October 1995, the potato became the
first vegetable to be grown in space.
• The Incas used potatoes to treat injuries
and they thought spuds made childbirth
easier.
• Potatoes have more potassium than
bananas
Featured Vegetable: Potatoes
Sure, potatoes aren’t typically the
shining star of a meal, but without them
the show simply could not go on. So this
week we are giving our steady and simple
friends a shout out.
This season, we grew approximately
1,200 pounds of potatoes!! So far you have
been enjoying the runts of the bunch, but
this week you’ll get to enjoy 3.5 pounds of
their girthier counterparts.
Like Vampires, potatoes prefer to be
stored in a cool, dry, dark place. Unlike
vampires, garlic is the potatoes best pal.
Week A shares have one more pick
up left and Week B shares have 2 pick ups
left (including this week)! And don’t you
worry, the potatoes will be in your share
boxes ready to cheer you on and introduce
you to your old friend, fall.
As for recipes this week, we trust
that you know what to do. We usually just
chop potatoes up, add some oil, salt and
pepper, and pop them in the oven at 415
degrees for 30ish minutes. Typically, we
pull them out a few minutes early and add
some fresh herbs- sage, rosemary and
thyme are a good place to start!
We love potatoes and it seems they love us too!
