This document discusses packaging materials used for spices in India. It provides details on:
1) The major types of packaging used for spices include glass bottles, flexible pouches made of laminated films such as PET, BOPP, and LDPE. These materials provide properties like barrier to moisture and gases extending shelf life.
2) The main equipment used for packaging spices are form fill seal machines and pouch packing machines which use heat sealable laminated films to package spices into pouches and bottles.
3) Key test methods evaluated packaging materials strength and integrity including squeeze tests for bottles and tear resistance and tensile strength tests for plastic films.
2. Introduction
Spices:
Dried Seed, Root, Bark, or Vegetable substance
Used for flavoring, coloring or preserving food.
Antimicrobial properties
India – top spice producing country
About 15 lakh metric tonnes.
4. Packing material
Package type:
Glass bottles of various sizes and shape with labels are
provided with metal or plastic caps.
Flexible pouches – pillow pouch, gusseted pouch,
stand-up pouch.
The flexible pouches are generally laminated of various
compositions:
Polyester/metallised polyester/LDPE
BOPP/LDPE
BOPP/metallised polyester/LDPE
Polyester/Al foil/LDPE
5.
6. Polyesters films:
• Highly transparent
• Low moisture and gas premeability.
• Prolonged shelf life of the contents of aroma, flavour,
and taste retention.
• Very high mechanical strength – minimise damage
Polyethylene terephthlate (PET):
• Linear, transparent thermoplastic polymer.
• Bottles and films are largely amorphous with small
crystallites and excellent transparency.
• Low permeability to moisture and gases.
7. BOPP Films:
Heat sealable or non heat sealable
Excellent moisture barrier
Film – smooth, glossy, crystal clear
High mechanical strength.
• For composite containers, plastic pouches – are with
LDPE or LLDPE
• Co-extruded films are also used
• PVDC, EVOH based flexible materials – having high
barrier properties.
9. Automatic Vertical Form

15. Test methods for packing materials
Glass bottles:
1) Squeeze tester: :
Each bottle is passed between discs that exert a force to
the body of the container.
Weakness or crack in the bottle
2) Check Detector:
• Focuses a beam of light onto areas of the container
• any crack will reflect the light to a detector, which will
trigger a mechanism to reject the bottle.
16. Tear Resistance:
Two ways – Internal tearing and edge tearing
The energy required to propagate an internal tear is
measured.
The energy required to initiate a tear is measured.
Tensile strength:
Force applied parallel to the plane of the specimen of
specified width and length under specified condition of
loading.
Plastic films are normally tested at higher speeds because
of higher extensibility.
