Anatoliy Gruzd, Jenna Jacobson, Ryerson University, Canada Jacquelyn Burkell, Western University Joanne McNeish, Ryerson University Anabel Quan-Haase, Western University Abstract The transnational flows of information across nations and borders make it difficult to introduce and implement privacy-preserving policies relating to social media data. Social media data are a rich source of behavioural data that can reveal how we connect and interact with each other online in real time. Furthermore, the materiality of new digital intermediaries (such as the Internet of Things, AI, and algorithms) raises additional anticipated and unanticipated privacy challenges that need to be addressed as we continue to speed towards an increasingly digitally-mediated future. A by-product of the large-scale social media adoption is social media data mining; publicly available social media data is largely free and legally available to be mined, analyzed, and used (Kennedy 2016) for whatever purposes by third parties. Researchers have begun to suggest that ethics need to be considered even if the data is public (boyd & Crawford 2012). In the wake of the EU's recent legislation of the General Data Protection Regulation and the Right to be Forgotten, as well as increasing critical attention around the world, the roundtable will discuss how to navigate the transnational and material, as well as the complex and competing, interests associated with using social media, including ethics, privacy, security, and intellectual property rights. By balancing people's individual rights to exercise autonomy over "their" data and the societal benefits of using and analyzing the data for insights, the roundtable aims to generate theoretically-rich discussion and debate with internet researchers about the ethics, privacy, and best practices of using social media data.

RUNNING HEAD: BIG DATA IN SOCIAL MEDIA 1 BIG DATA IN SOCIAL MEDIA 3 Big Data in Social Media By definition, Big Data can simply be termed as voluminous data. In more specific definitions, it can be termed as that which is large, complex and fast and a s a result, is not in a position to be processed using the typical traditional methods of data processing. The volume, variety, velocity, variability and veracity are used in the categorizing of data as big data. With the development in technology, and the continued incorporation of these technological sources into our day to day lives, the collected data through the Internet of Things among other information systems has resulted in big data (Ivanov, 2018). One such areas where Big data is found is in the social media platforms. As opposed to the olden days, currently, more and more people and companies are using social media daily to achieve their specific objectives and goals, it is estimated that social media platforms like Facebook produce data as big as 500+ terabytes in a s ingle day! Most of these data in the social media are as a result of the videos, photos, messages and comments being shared across the media platforms. Not only do individuals use social media to keep in touch, but companies also use it in a concept called social media marketing. Through the media, and using big data analytics, companies are able to map out consumer behavior through what they like and what they share (Nicora, 2019). They use these platforms to reach their target audiences and at the same time use them to get feedback from their clients. As a result, the amount of data from social media platforms is not only voluminous, it is also heterogenous in the sense that it contains both nominal and numeral values from different places, it is variable in that it has unpredictable flow, it is fast because it is collected in real time. In August 2013, a multidisciplinary group gathered at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center to address the theme of “Community Resilience Through big data and Technology.” Creative and critical thinkers were selected from the technology sector, academia, the arts, humanitarian and ecological spheres. Over ten days, we explored how data could be used to help build community resilience in the face of a range of stresses — environmental, political, social and economic. Large data collection and analysis may support communities by providing them with timely feedback loops on their immediate environment. However, the collection and use of data can also create new vulnerabilities and risks, by enabling discriminating against individuals, skewing evidence, and creating dependencies on centralized infrastructure that may increase a system’s vulnerability. After analyzing these risks and opportunities, we developed a framework to help guide the effective use of data for building community-driven resilience. In this framework, we propose six domains: ethics, governance, science, technology, place and sociocultural context. We believe that by considering all six domains together, organizations can safeguard against predictable failures by exposing project weaknesses from the outset rather than in hindsight.

Abstract: Social media data is a rich source of behavioural data that can reveal how we connect and interact with each other online in real-time and over time, and what that might mean for our society as we continue to speed towards an increasingly computer-mediated future. And as more and more Canadians are joining and contributing to various social media websites, their automatically recorded data are rapidly becoming available to third parties to mine for both commercial and academic purposes. As a result, questions around why and how data consumers’ use social media data are becoming pertinent. This talk will review different approaches to Social Media Data Stewardship (the collection, storage, use, reuse, analysis, and preservation of social media data) and discuss some ethical implications of working with such data.
