2. WHAT IS INTERNET OF THINGS ???
AN INTRODUCTION
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical
objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software,
sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater
value and service by exchanging data with the
manufacturer, operator and/or other connected
devices. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its
embedded computing system but is able to
interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure.
- Wikipedia
The “Internet of Things” refers to the concept that the
Internet is no longer just a global network for people to
communicate with one another using computers, but it
is also a platform for devices to communicate
electronically with the world around them.

3. Electronic devices have become integral part of our lives. We can see electronics in all our
appliances. Internet of things [IOT] enables these devices to be connected and interact with
each other. IOT allows devices to have their own machine readable identification and ability to
transfer data over network without human interaction.
Smart systems and the Internet Of Things are driven by a combination of 3 entities :
1. Sensors & Actuators – We are giving our
world a digital nervous system. Location
data using GPS sensors. Eyes & ears using
cameras & microphones, along with
sensory organs that can measure
everything from temperature to pressure
changes.
2. Connectivity – These inputs are digitized
and placed onto networks.
3. People & Processes – These networked
inputs can then be combined into
bi-directional systems that integrate
data, people, processes and systems
for better decision making.
4. LATEST TRENDS
Smart Home
BLE(Bluetooth Low Energy or Bluetooth Smart) allows controlling lights, home appliances, door locks, garage doors, security
system, air conditioning and heater. These devices when fitted with Bluetooth Smart can communicate with Bluetooth Smart ready
phones or tablet. Innovative Apps can be developed to control the various elements of smart home according the person’s own
requirement.
Industrial Automation
Industrial equipment’s can now send key performance and safety information without the need of long cables directly to
Bluetooth Smart ready phone, tablet or computers. It allows for higher flexibility for machinery installation and easy integration into
the network.
Using this concept machines can automatically inform about their key parameters, replacement requirement, fuel shortage or
ordering of raw material without virtually any human intervention.
Healthcare and fitness
Sport watches, heart rate monitors, glucose monitors, pulse oximeters, pedometers can now be connected to Smartphones
through BLE and also get connected to internet through smartphones. It will enable information be stored on cloud and share with
doctors and family members. BLE has also enabled these gadget to be placed at strategic locations such as shoes, wrist etc. BLE
support many healthcare related profiles such as glucose meters, heart rate monitoring, thermometer and blood pressure.
Proximity and Anti-theft accessories
A small BLE accessory when tagged to pets and kids can alert the smartphone if they sneak out of reach. BLE enabled car keys
can be found easily with the help of connected Smartphone. Wallets and luggage tagged with BLE can alert the Smartphone if some
try to steal them.
5. CONSUMERS DON’T CARE ABOUT THE INTERNET OF THINGS
OKAY MOST OF THEM DON’T
Lets focus on people for a minute. They want Internet of Caring Things.
Internet Of Caring Things | A network of connected objects brought to life by a clear mission: to actively care for
consumers – their physical and mental wellbeing, homes, loved ones, and more.
These technologies are about to make big in next 5 years :
INTERNET OF HEALTHY THINGS - Connected objects that weave self-tracking through daily life will
supercharge self-improvement of fitness and physical wellbeing.
Stir Kinetic Desk - Over time, the Stir Kinetic Desk ‘learns’ about an individual’s preferences via a
built-in touchscreen, where individuals can store information about the height at which they
prefer to sit and stand and adapts to these.
INTERNET OF MINDFUL THINGS – Stressed, time-poor, over-stimulated consumers will expect the Internet
of Caring Things to attend to their mental well being too .
NeuroOn – NeuroOn sleep mask monitors brain waves, muscle tension and eye movements to
determine the most efficient sleeping pattern for its wearer. It allows you to switch from monophasic
to polyphasic sleep. That means you can sleep less and more efficiently.
INTERNET OF SAFETY THINGS – Physical safety is one of the most fundamental human needs. Now, a
network of CARING objects can unlock new ways to serve it. .
Skully – Smart motorcycle helmet helps eliminate blindspots using cameras and heads-up display.
6. INTEREST AREAS
One area which really interests me is the integration of Cloud Computing with
Internet of Things.
If integrated together, these two technologies will give far reaching results and
have unlimited scope consumers as well as manufacturers/developers.
Analytics and Advertising –
Data analytics will become even more accurate in predicting consumer
preference and behaviour.
The IoT will dramatically change the way we live our daily lives and what
information is stored about us.
Internet of Things needs a large amount of data to be stored for a handful of
devices just for a single person. Thus to cater the needs of the whole world it
needs a storage device which has capacity equivalent to infinite, which can
be fulfilled by Cloud Computing
If given an internship, I would like to help making day-to-day appliances
interact with its users and adapt and adjust themselves according to the habits
and preferences of their user.
