Internet of Things
1. Internet of
things(IoT)

2. Introduction
Internet of things is a concept that envisions every object
around us as a part of internet. IoT has provided a promising
opportunity to build powerful industrial systems and
applications by leveraging the growing ubiquity of radio-
frequency identification (RFID), and wireless, mobile, and
sensor devices.
Once all these devices are connected with each other, they
enable more and more smart processes that support our basic
needs, environment, health etc.
Such enormous number of devices connected to internet
provide many kind of services and provide huge amount of
data and information.
4. Trends
Some large organizations like HP and IBM build out impressive platforms
and trends for the Internet of Things:
HP's CENSE Network-Central Nervous System for the Earth.
The goal is to create a worldwide network of sensors, which will create a
feedback loop for objects and people. These sensors will measure data such
as vibration, rotation, sound, air flow, light, temperature, pressure and more.
IBM's Smarter Planet-IBM's Smarter Planet campaign is about
connecting objects to the Internet and applying intelligence and services
on top of that. In four cities where IBM has helped deploy congestion
management solutions, control of traffic volume during peak periods ,
CO2 emissions from motor vehicles were reduced.
Few other trends-
DASH7- a networking technology that uses the ISO/IEC 18000-7
standard for RFID - an open standard for license-free use in 433 MHz
wireless bandwidth.
AutoBot- that allows you to control aspects of your car with your smart
phone.
5. Pachube-Pachube(open IoT platform) lets you tag and share real time
sensor data from objects, devices, buildings and environments.
FUTURE ADVANCEMENT-
Power & Utilities-Internet-connected smart meters measure power usage
every 15 minutes and provide feedback to the power consumer
Automotive-Sensors embedded in the road working together with car-based
sensors are used for hands-free driving, traffic pattern optimization and
accident avoidance.
Healthcare-sensors work together with patients’ smartphones to monitor and
transmit patient physical environment and vital signs to a central cloud-
based system(i.e. Internet of health).
Technology-Hardware manufacturers continue to innovate by embedding
sensors to measure performance and predict maintenance needs before they
happen.
Telematics allows devices installed in the car to transmit data to drivers and
insurers.
Electronic doorbells silently scan hotel rooms with infrared sensors to detect
body heat, so the staff can clean when guests have left the room.
6. Interest Areas
My area of interest is :- Internet of things using Sensors and Cloud
computing.
I would intend to work on:
Vehicular applications:
The drivers health condition whether he is capable or not for
driving can be continuously monitored by the sensors, thus in case
of emergency, his location and his condition could be notified to the
nearest hospital.
provide real-time information about parking availability to locate
parking spots faster and more efficiently, which saves time of car
drivers and reduces energy consumption
Smart Troubleshooting: Identify, Diagnose, and Repair
By making sensory data available in the cloud and be remotely
accessible to experts in real time so that diagnosis and necessary
repairs can be made fast and effectively.
